...I bought a 4490 specifically to use for scanning slides and negatives. There is no doubt that this scanner is an excellent item for those people that want a professional looking job at a very good price. Previously I had the Epson 2480 and although this was good, it is no match for the 4490,expected really with the time elasped between the release of the models. With the resolution set at least 2400dpi and with only unsharp mask and colour restoration selected the faded slides and neagatives were nearly as new. There are a few points that should be noted. If you are a novice and just want to scan something quickly without having to set different functions this may not be a scanner for you. By selecting colour restoration and Background correction when they are not needed, you can have a negative effect on what would have been...

...with plenty of technical knowledge but no appreciation of how to impart this knowledge to the uninitiated consumer. Having had bad experiences previously with maufacturers support lines and a poor opinion of interactive support sites, I didn't use these, preferring to bash on by myself. I had therefore to learn to use the scanner by trial and error. This too is not satisfactory and in my view the reference guide is something which needs to be looked at by Epson. Perhaps their own support is excellent, but I don't suppose I'll ever know. I've had to give it a rating in order that the review is accepted so it gets "Satisfactory." Perfection Is Not Nesasary

Advantages: Cheap and Does The Job
Disadvantages: Long Time To Install Drivers

...the more dots per inch you have is better, but again a 300 dot per inch photo is perfectly reasonable. Installing this scanner is easy if you have the CD you slap the CD in and follow the instructions. If like me you don't then you need to pay a visit to www.epson.co.uk to get the drivers, which are easy to find. You simply download the files and plug the thing into the mains and a spare USB port and away it goes. Windows XP does not recognise the scanner automatically so it is important that you install the drivers first. I have never used the software bundled with a scanner since I got my first one many years ago, and I recommend that everyone spends some cash on getting a decent image editing package. I use JASC software's Paint Shop Pro, as it is cheap and just as good as Adobe's Photoshop. To scan using paint shop pro it is simple...
