...Having just recently brought my new Epson printer which is a excellent piece of equipment I am dismayed that when Epson sell new models like my Photo 1270 that they do not put a supply of ink into the market place. MY printer cost me just short of £400.00 is three months old and useless because there is no colour ink available, I find this totally intolerable from such a big company the machine will not even print in black and white so I have a £400.00 piece of junk. Epson also do not publish an email address to enable contact they only have printed forms for help which make complaining very difficult dont think I will bye Epson ever again, it also does not pay to bye the best... Advantages: Top quality printer
Disadvantages: Bit of trouble with cyan ink

...Although the 870/1270 is an otherwise excellent printer, potential buyers and current owners should be aware of the rapid fading of cyan inks that afflicts the 870 and 1270 printers. I have experienced this problem, which is particulary bad on Epson's Premium Glossy Photo Paper. Within months of printing an image, all the cyan has faded away. Some people have reported significant fading in less than an hour, others haven't had the problem at all. Epson has reported that the cyan ink is reacting with ozone and other oxidizing gases and now recommends that all prints be put under glass or stored in protective plastic pages to provide the promised "photo life". Needless to say, this performance is disappointing for many owners and Epson USA has extended buy back offers to afflicted individuals. Epson is working on solutions to this problem... Read review

...I've been using the Epson 1270 for about a year now. I've used the Epson 1520 and the old 750 in the past. I currently own the 1270 and the Olympus P-400 dye sublimation printer for my photography work. The 1270 produces incredible photos with a wide color gamut due to it's 6 color ink tanks. To explain what I mean here for anyone who is new to photo quality inkjet printers; with lower quality inkjet printers you get three colored inks plus black. The colors are yellow, cyan (blue) and magenta. These colors produce a fairly good photo, but are not able to produce the light greens and some light pinks and other light colors as well as the 6 color printers. With a 6 color printer you get an additional light cyan and a light magenta. The addition of the two colors makes for a much wider color spectrum that can be produced. I've done... Read review

...Having used this printer for several years now, I have seen the best - and worst - that it has to offer.  When that first A3 colour, photo-realistic prints slips out on the paper tray, you will fall in love with it immediately.  You inital frustration at finding a space on your desktop for this beast of a printer to sit will soon fade as you marvel a the definition and vibrancy of the print.  And your further frustration at realising how much extra space is taken up by the pull out print tray (especially for A3 prints) will also disappear when you see that inital vibrancy of the image remain day after day as it hangs on your wall, assuming of course you used the correct paper/ink combination! It goes head to head with HP's latest A3 printer and at under £400 pound is aggressively priced. As you'd expect, image output quality is excellent, well up to the level we've seen in the more recent Epson photo quality printers. However they haven't yet managed to remove the operational noise and this can be annoying compared to HP's almost silent operation. ...This I believe is the best value A3 photographic printer around. It is very quiet and has no frills. Simply produces stunning photo results when set up correctly and using the correct photo paper for the job. The 1290 with a higher resolution is excellent also, but I believe the 1270 can be obtained at a very competitive price and for me produces results that are hard to beat. 1) Works well with latest Windows versions. 2) Cartridges have electronic chips that allow changover of carts when partly used. This is important to a photographer who may, for example, want to install quad black ink carts to produce stunning mono prints. When finished printing mono you just swap the carts over again and the programmed chip remembers the ink level etc. The original Epson carts are best for this machine and yet are relatively inexpensive. This may not seem long, but keep in my mind I used for 8 hours almost every day, so I got a pretty good idea of what it is capable. Advantages: Superb photo printer. Prints to A3+. Cheap for what it does.
Disadvantages: Large footprint

...Firstly, for the record, the 1290S is nothing more than a 1290 that's had an external makeover. i.e. it's silver as opposed to battleship grey - hence the 'S'. It replaced the 1270 which was getting a bit long in the tooth. As a serious photographer who exhibits internationally, I need the very best printer that's affordable to me. When my trusty old Epson Stylus Photo 870 finally gave up the ghost last October, I decided to upgrade from A4 to A3 capability. For exhibition work, having the ability to produce large prints of near perfect quality is essential. The 1290S was the obvious choice. I've now lived with this machine for 9 months or so and cannot fault it in any respect. I bought mine from Amazon for £249.99, which was the cheapest I could find it at the time.
