Esporta Health Club, Croydon
Advantages: Opens early, closes late. Lots of facilities and services
Disadvantages: Too many noisy children, expensive
...Esporta Croydon, also known as The Surrey Health and Rackets club, is part of a huge UK chain, owned by venture capitalist Simon Halabi. It was primarily a rackets club and has been responsible for helping train some of the up and coming Tennis stars of tomorrow.
Esporta is situated in a purpose built warehouse on a large industrial estate not far from Waddon mainline station and houses a spacious gymnasium, also known as the "Fitness Arena", a large family pool and an even larger olympic sized pool. There are numerous Tennis courts and several Squash courts. It is a club which encourages families, so may not suit those in search of halcyon days.
Having parked in the spacious car park you will come through the double doors into the reception area, where you will be greeted by the welcoming reception staff, who will actually greet...

Esporta, North Oxford
Advantages: Luxurious gym, friendly staff, great equipment
Disadvantages: A bit more expensive than other gyms and exercise still hurts
..."Esporta Health and Fitness Club" has been rapidly expanding recently into various new sites around the country and although the Oxford site is not new, it is new to me as only joined recently and so far I cannot recommend it highly enough. In brief, Esporta provides much more pleasant experience than all other gym's I've attended.
Location
The Oxford Esporta is on Banbury Road, one of the major trunk roads going from the roundabout of the A34 (which links to M40) into the centre of this beautiful historic city. Esporta is 2 miles from the centre of Oxford in the leafy suburbs of the expensive North Oxford area. The entrance is not particularly obviously, as the centre is located behind St Edwards School playing fields, but if you look out to the left when going out of Oxford the blue sign should be obvious enough. If you get...

I'm sorta off Esporta
Advantages: Great equipment, good range of classes
Disadvantages: Expensive, impersonal, membership administration
...I joined Esporta because I wanted a gym that would let me use its clubs all over the country, as I was doing a lot of travelling at the time. So Esportas Freeway membership seemed like a good idea. They have clubs all over the country which you can use at no extra cost and they're in nearly every big city. Gloucester was my 'home' club.
The gym is spacious and the equipment is all top-of-the-range. They seem to have just about everything, steppers, runners, x-country, rowers, cyclers and all the weights machines too. There's also cardio theatre so you can workout whilst watching the tv and listening on headphones. They have about 6 different channels such as MTV, Sky One, Sky News, Sky Sports, ITV, BBC1. Very good if you like to watch Eastenders and get a workout. You can also get a programme set up for you by the staff that means...

Pleasant fitness club in manchester
Advantages: Plenty of equipment, classes, and a great view
Disadvantages: Cost, location depending on where you are
...The Esporta at Salford Quays is probably one of the best in the Manchester area in terms of cleanliness, service, appearance, and equipment. It is lacking mainly in size of the pool, and perhaps location, but the location depends on where you live, so it may be very convenient!
The fitness area includes two levels of machines for
Cardio: stationary cycles, sitting cycles, rowing machines, treadmills, step machines, and a variety of other equipment like elliptical trainers.
Weight machines: bench press, leg press, shoulder machines, arm machines, and a variety of specialized equipment for hamstrings and tummy exercises.
Free weights: all the necessary weights and bars you could need.
Stretching/fitness ball area: a floorspace with area for stretching, using small freeweights, or fitness balls.
Spin room: enough room for maybe...

Sports Club in Kinston upon Thames
Advantages: good facilities and not too busy
Disadvantages: quite expensive compared to other sports clubs
...Many of my friends live in Kingston and are members of the Esporta gym on the Richmond Road. When they told me that I could get a days free membership trial if I entered my details on their website I jumped at the chance.
The gym is in a good location, approximately three minutes walk from kingston train station. I made good use of my days trial, had a swim in the pool, used the steam room and sauna and afterwards even did a quick gym workout. The swimming pool was very nice and I was suprised how empty it was considering it was the weekend. They had designated swimming lanes in place for those wanting to do a good workout, aswell as plenty of extra pool space for those just wanting to relax.
I was told several times by my friends that there was loads of equipment in the gym and there is, although a number of the machines...

Don't touch Esporta
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: dishonest money-grabbing thugs
...My advice regarding this chain of fitness clubs is don't touch them with a barge pole. Yes, their premises are clean, well-equipped and worked in by some excellent fitness instructors. However, apart from British Gas, they are the worst company I have ever done business with. Check out the BBC Watchdog programme website for more information on their scams and dishonesty.
I joined their London Islington club four years ago. The guy who did the initial assessment appeared fine, however he told me some lies that were to have huge consequences and costs later on. Incidentally he was nowhere to be seen a week after I joined.
First lie was that the membership fee was non-negotiable and had to be paid by everyone joining the club. After a few months I discovered this was not the case. Regrettably, this was after I had encouraged...

Esporta Number
Advantages: well appointed, nice clean facilities
Disadvantages: lack of free weights, price
...I recently got a mailshot offering a day's free membership of Esporta. Getting the voucher for it was simplicity itself, visit the website, select the day and time you wanted, and print out the voucher. Dead easy.
When I arrived I was left kicking my heels at the reception desk for about 5-8 minutes. Luckily I was with a mate, but not being the most patient of people, if I'd have been on my own it would not have been a good start. Having said that the girl that eventually served us was very pleasant, and after we had filled out a few forms signing our lives away we were in.
The fitness suite is very impressive, every conceivable weight machine, and method or torture available was there and in very good condition. It was well appointed with extensive use carpet, and effecient air conditioning. Similarly there is a vast range of CV...

Esporta Kingston is Very Poor
Advantages: Children friendly including baby pool, creche and other kids pastimes, food in cafe, free towels to use.
Disadvantages: Price, Gym equipment, Changing rooms, cleanliness, pay for parking, membership contract
...I certainly would never have joined Esporta except for the childrens creche and other children facilities enabling our family to be able to use a local health and fitness club with this reasonable facility.
As I said in advantages the only way I think that anyone could consider joining this club is if you have children under 16 especially very young ones which you can leave in the creche or a class whilst you work out.
Even though they provide facilities for children they charge you for virtually everything in this regard and some things are expensive. This is on top of the highest membership fees in the area.
Everything else about the club is very poor. At the present time April 2006 the following are some of our observations:-
GYM:
The equipment generally old. Not enough variety especially in cardio vascular where you only...

Quick Fit !
Advantages: Welcoming, homely, well-run
Disadvantages: Expensive if you do not use it a lot
...Gyms have a habit of getting folk to join who soon forget that they are paying on monthly direct debit for something they hardly ever use.
For me, that was the main reason I would never even think of joining such an establishment.
However, two and a half years ago, I changed my tune, thanks to Esporta. - so here is my applause for a club that has helped me lose over 2 stone in weight, and get fit enough to climb the stairs without having to be revived with pure oxygen afterwards.!
1 ~~~~~~My Track Record~~~~~~~
Early years of life saw my involvement in rugby, tennis, cricket, badminton and then squash - the latter for several years and up to three times a week.
Then mid-life saw extra work commitments, less opportunity to play, and less by way of fellow competitors where we were living.
The weight was rushing towards 19...
