Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits

Advantages: Complete compilation of Cohen at his best
Disadvantages: None

...This was one of the first albums I ever bought, and has been one of the most played in my collection ever since. I first came across Leonard Cohen by way of Joan Baez's cover of "Suzanne" - incidentally, the first track on this album. I loved the wistful lyrics of the song, and hunted out the original. Having found it, I also discovered a host of other Cohen gems, the best of which can be found on this greatest hits recording. The album features 12 tracks, including: 1. Suzanne 2. Sisters of Mercy 3. So Long, Marianne 4. Bird on a Wire 5. Lady Midnight 6. Partisan 7. Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye 8. Famous Blue Raincoat 9. Last Year's Man 10. Chelsea Hotel No. 2 11. Who by Fire 12. Take This Longing The album has a distinctly 60's feel, with Cohen's typical, spoken-word style of singing elevated by...

Review of Greatest Hits - Leonard Cohen

The Best of Leonard Cohen

Advantages: Cohens influencial greatness, lovely songs
Disadvantages: ...No Hallelujah

...OPINION I first heard of Leonard Cohen at a friends house as a record, the song was "Suzanne" and I loved it. I remembered the name and to my delight I found his CD in the Woolworths price crunch a while back now. His songs are so calming but have lyrics that explore ideas of religion, isolation, sexuality and complex interpersonal relationships, so as calm as they seem their underlying provocations are deeply moving. ARTIST Leonard Cohen is a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist. His earliest songs are rooted in European folk music, his 1970's music encompasses pop, chaberet and world music and since the 1980's his high baritone voice took on more low registers, often accompanied by electronic synthesizers and female backing singers. His writing has influenced lots of singer-songwriters and more than...

Review of Greatest Hits - Leonard Cohen

1 + 2 = a great book

Advantages: A funny and novel novel
Disadvantages: None

... FRACTAL MURDERS By Mark Cohen This is a unique first novel from Mark Cohen as fractal geometry is the basis for the book, with its wisecracking, tough private investigator protagonist - Pepper Keane. I hated maths at school and did wonder how I would enjoy, or if I would understand, this book but Mark Cohen's research is obvious in his writing, and makes the fractal principle not only understandable but interesting as well. Yes Mr Goodall (my poor old maths teacher) I did say 'understand' and 'interesting'!!!! When an apparent suicide, a robbery resulting in the victim getting shot in the back of his head and a murder rape victim are all connected by the fact that the three of them were all professors specializing in Fractal Mathematics - the discipline that analyses geometric shapes to identify patterns...

The Book of Eli

Advantages: Good story with a twist at the end, will surprise you
Disadvantages: NA

...The story is set in an alternative reality after an apocalyptic event which destroyed world?s civilization. The world is reverted back to the very primitive state. It about Eli(starring Denzel Washington) who?s been walking around America. He arrives at a colony where Carnegie is the leader. Carnegie has his men going round the country to look for a book. Carnegie hears Eli quoting phrases from the bible and believes that he is an educated man, he then asks Eli to stay to help him rebuild the human society. Eli refuses as he has his own mission as well. With the help of Solara, Carnegie?s step daughter, he escapes. Carnegie, however, would not give up as he believes Eli has the bible, the book that he?s been looking for. He and his men chase after Solara and Eli and Eli is injured. Refused to tend to his wound, Eli continues his...

A Book Lover

Advantages: Well-drawn characters. Creative use of words.
Disadvantages: A little difficult to adjust to the changing style of writing

...The Book Thief written by Australian author Marcus Zusak was published in Australia in 2005 as an adult novel and in America in 2006 as a children?s novel. It finally came to the UK in 2007 published by Doubleday and Black Swan in both adult and teen-age versions. Though I have to admit, I do not know what the differences between the two versions are! My copy and the one I am reviewing is the adult version. The novel proved to be a triumphant success greeted by glowing accolades from a wide range of literary reviewers ? excerpts of which can be found in the book. The most apt from The Irish Examiner, ?A peculiar tale, whose deceptively plain language and cryptic style describe the most profound of human emotions and the most hideous of human actions . . . an unusual and compelling novel? Set in Nazi Germany during the Second World...

Harri eta herri

Advantages: Amusing, quirky insight full of historical detail
Disadvantages: Absolutely none.

...Beyond ETA - what do you actually know about the Basques? If it comes to that, what do you know about ETA? Can you tell me what it stands for, what it means? I'll be suitably impressed if you can. We all know where the Basques live - more or less - we probably know less about the French three provinces than the Spanish four. You may even know that their language Euskera is not related to any other language in Europe - but do you know any more than that about it? No. Me neither. Then a friend leant me Mark Kurlansky's 'The Basque History of the World': "This is 'The Basque History of the World' because Basques at times think they are the world"?and it must be owned that it is hard to read this book without being reminded of the TV sketch where the elderly Asian is claiming the first invention of just about everything...

Tweenies Book

Advantages: children will enjoy it
Disadvantages: none unless your child wants you to read it about 10 times a day

...I got this book from a book club for my eldest and now my youngest likes to look at it. It's a hard back book with each page inside being double thin card so that the pull out pictures are fitted in the middle of them. The book is called 'Come Back Colours' because Doodles (The red dog) has lost its colour and so have all the Tweenies toys. The front cover has a picture of the youngest Tweenie Jake and the colourless Doodles, when you open the book you see a picture of the other Tweenies (Milo, Bella and Fizz) on the opposite page is Jake with his special cape opening his arms to the colourless Doodles. The story starts ' One day, Jake put on his special coloured cape.' His job was to look after the colours but where have Doodles colours gone? Jake comes to the rescue waves his arms and says 'Colours come and colours go...

Books for free!

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...Like most people I love a bargain! I also love buying books, both for myself as presents. So when I discovered The book people a few months ago I was very happy indeed! The book people. ************** The Book people are a company selling discounted books. They are not a club so there is no minimum number of books to purchase or any other catches. They simply sell books at hugely discounted prices. There is no shop to browse but you can either order from their web site at www.thebookpeople.co.uk or you can request a catalogue and use the enclosed order form or alternatively you can phone your order by calling 0845-602-4040. I have always ordered on line although once you have ordered you will receive regular catalogues through the post. The web site. *********** The first thing to say is that the web site is nothing fancy...

A cook book for students

Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: not appealing

...I was bought this when I went to university. My auntie bought it me thinking that it would suddenly turn me into the next Deliah Smith or something but it didn't really have this effect on me at all! I didn't really use it and it was a good job it was quite a cheap buy so I didn't feel guilty for the fact it sat on my book shelf, hidden by all the huge text books I had to buy! Who is it for? This book is really very obviously aimed at students as you can tell by the title; "The New Students' Cook Book". When I first saw it I presumed that a cook book for students would contain very quick and simple recipes. When I was a student I didnt have much time for cooking and if I did want to cook something instead of order the usual pizza I didn't want to spend hours reading a recipe or fiddling around in the kitchen. This, isn...
