...I completely agree with the previous review, and there's nothing much to say for this item. It sucks!! I wasted my company money and their confidence on me with this little piece of crap. So, how did I end buying this? On a Tom's Hardware review I saw this item, which has the ability of being an ethernet disk and an USB disk at the same time, which at the moment, was an innovation. With such a configuration the disk can be accesible to ethernet users even at [theoric] gigabit speeds and at the same time being accessed by a local user through USB connection. You do not need to run this software, however if you do you will be able to see the connection speed. You will also be able to set up a full home network to share files etc between your computers. But it is not necessary if all you want is to share your internet connection. It really couldn't be simpler. The only thing you do need is a router. This will enable you to share your connection even with your main pc switched off. If you do not have a router you will only be able to share if it is on. Free modems supplied by ISP's are not usually routers as well. I would therefore recommend getting a modem/router. One of the things you notice when you open the package is a quick install leaflet, which is great, it usually means a quick and easy install that even a computer novice could do without trouble, and that is exactly what you get with this. The constant trouble I had with these routers is, when running a machine on Windows XP, I had to restart the router when I started the computer, otherwise the computer would not recognise it was on the network and therefore couldn't get through to the internet connection. Although this is just another button to press when starting your computer, it becomes frustrating because when you reset the router all the other computers on the network will lose the internet connection for around 30 seconds until it has completed. Felt like the data transfer was instant, so was perfect for backing up data from one machine onto another Driver's are very easy to get hold of, just download them straight from the manufacturers website. Which also has very good support, if any problems should arise. Very fast if needing updating due to new driver releases. I would highly recommend this ethenet adapter to anyone. ...was not lit, so although I had a broadband connection something was going wrong somewhere along the line. The netgear also has a diagnostics page which you can access on your pc and from that I saw that the speed was very slow and there was a lot of noise on the line. So this was evidence for vodafone to give BT engineers who came and found my phone line was broken at the telegraph pole. One new phone line later and everything is well. The modem is white and comes with a stand so it actually stands on end and takes up very little space. It needs to be plugged into the electric and connects with via ethernet....

In other words, the router is connected to the hub and the Xircom® network card is connected to the hub via standard CAT 5 cables. This event happens because some cable modem/DSL Routers do not have an uplink port. This problem can be resolved by using a crossover cable between cable modem/DSL router and ethernet hub 3. Finally, another issue is in Windows2000, as the Network adapter automatically disconnects from the network after being idle for a period of time. The resolution for this problem is at http://www.intel.com/support/network/xc/adapter/rpem/2045.htm, but involves changing the registry, so please backup the registry BEFORE doing what XIRCOM says.
