Evolution review

...Evolution - a theory and now a film! It's directed by Ivan Reitman, who gave us the classic "Ghostbusters" and not so classic but still very good "Ghostbusters 2". Here, he helms another supernatural comedy, and even manages to bring aboard Dan Aykroyd in a small cameo role. When a meteorite falls to earth near the small town of Glen Canyon, two college professors, Dr. Ira Kane (David Duchovny) and Prof. Harry Phineas Block (Orlando Jones), are given the job of examining it. While they are doing just that, they find organisms of an extraterrestrial origin. And not just that, they are evolving at a incredible rate, even while Ira is watching. Soon the military show up and completely seal off the meteor. Completely ostracized from their discovery, they keep doing research, and are surprised when the original discoverer of the meteor...

Now, first off, I'd like to talk about... ~~~Some Personal Stuff!!!~~~ I've always been a fan of Dead or Alive ever since I can remember, (which was about five or six years ago actually) and I bought this collection earlier this year. (When I finally got round to it!) Before I bought the 'Evolution - The Hits' album, actually before I'd evan heard of it, I had only ever heard of 'You Spin Me Round' ('Like A Record') (the 1985 version) and the reason I found out about this collection (like the Hits CD) was in 2003 when Pete Burns decided to re-release the song with a new leas of life. Giving the song more of a modern twist and making it more of a dance or club (depending on where you go) mix. Well, I loved the song...

Do The Evolution

Advantages: Funny, good effects, tongue-in-cheek
Disadvantages: Some cheesey moments, bit weak in places

...So, I hear that Ghostbusters 3 has been in development hell for quite a while, and there is something holding it back. Ivan Reitman is obviously fed up with waiting for it to happen, so here is Evolution. Ghostbusters 3 in all but name and with no "DON'T CROSS THE BEAMS!". I understand the movie was originally going to be a horror, this is very telling as wen you watch the film, you may jump once or twice (me and my girlfriend did), and can see where comedy has replaced "Oh my God it's eating hiom alive" moments. The Ghostbusters theme comes from three ordinary joes (David Duchovny, Orlando Jones and Seam Wiliam Scott (I think I've gotten his name wrong) stare at a meteroite for a while (strangely, the meteor lands without mashing up the nearby town a la Armageddon) and scrape some ooze off it. UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION...good sequel

Advantages: good follow-on, some great effects...good film !
Disadvantages: none really

...as promised...UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION Running time: approx: 1 hour 42mins Cert: 18 The film takes us back to the tale of Seline and just a few days have passed since the end of the first film (Underworld) So Selene and a slightly bewildered Micheal (the now Were-wolf Vampire hybrid) are on the run after the murder of Victor one of the Vampire clan's Elders, as Marcus, the last of the Vampire Elders has awoken early, he is stronger than ever before and not a happy bunny. He hunts down the pair seeking revenge.... Marcus, the first Vampire, also needs to find Selene for other more pressing personal reasons. Selene is the only one who knows the location where the first Were-wolf is imprisoned... Tried not to completely ruin the plot for you ! Evolution - more like devolution

Advantages: good special effects, good performance from Orlando Jones
Disadvantages: Julianne Moore - why was she there? Poor script, few laughs

...Evolution. A film recommended to me by both my friends AND my family. Would I do the same thing to them? I couldn't honestly say whether I would. X-files star David Duchovney appears as Ira Kane, Orlando Jones as Harry Block, and Julianne Moore as Dr. Allison...erm...someone. Anyhow, the first two are college professors, Ms. Moore a rather clumsy government science type in 'need of a good humping' according to Dr. Block(Jones). And that very line should really give you a fair picture of what this picture promises. Brilliant special effects backed up by a good idea with a rather tawdry script. That's what I'd describe this film as. I enjoyed it yes, but I couldn't help thinking it could have been a whole lot better, although I'm not sure how. Evolution follows the story of a crashed meteor which is carrying alien life...

Advantages: Looks great. Sean William Scott.
Disadvantages: Not funny...too many jokes miss their mark.

...Ivan Reitman's directorial career is much like a rollercoaster ride...it has it's highs (Ghostbusters, Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Dave) and it has it's lows (Ghostbusters 2, Junior, Father's Day). Then there are the movies in the middle such as Six Days & Seven Nights. His latest offering is Evolution and this follows along that same stretch of the coaster...promising so much and, ultimately, being a bit of a disappointment. A meteor hits the Earth in the middle of an Arizona desert and two local scientists - Dr Ira Kane & Dr Harry Block - discover a new organism that leaks from the rock. They study it the organism, which evolves at an astronomical rate and it's not long until they realise that this species is becoming an increasing threat to mankind. Evolution, surely this has been done before..

Advantages: Amusing in part, Orlando Jones' character,
Disadvantages: Tired old cocept, a disappointment after all the hype.

...I was interested to see what it was about the plot of Evolution that inspired David Duchovny to do another film with alien connotations after his stint in X-Files. It's hardly an original concept, a meteorite crashes into earth containing aliens, which evolve at an alarming rate and then want to take over the world. Our heroes, Ira Kane (Duchovny) and Harry Black (Orlando Jones) and Allison Reed (Julianne Moore) then have to come to the rescue, battling both aliens and bureaucrats. Evolution was a watchable comedy, a good way to kill an hour or so but it certainly wasn't an outstanding work. It was an easy film, one to watch and not have to think about. 10 things I hate about Evolution

Advantages: Dan Akcroyd is God, one star is for him
Disadvantages: Everyone else is not very good

...My expectations were pretty low when I went to see this, but I was still surprised at the level of crapness to which it sank. It really, really wasn't very good. However, bring enough friends, cynicism and good food with you, and a good time will most likely be had by all. If you can laugh at the cackness of cack jokes, then you can laugh at this. But bring a can of nitrous oxide, just in case. Here are 10 things I hate about Evolution: 1. Towards the end of the film, for reasons I do not think should be specified, our heroes (the least offensive way to put it) encounter a giant pulsing, farting alien ass. I don't generally mind toilet humour(South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut was, to me, hilarious), but this was just a great big (about 5m in diameter) anus, which just sat there trying to be funny. Evolution in a month

Advantages: a great film with a few funny parts
Disadvantages: you either love it or hate it

...Evolution is a film that you either love or hate. If your into films like Men in Black then you'll definately like this one, it is full of strange creatures and wierd aliens! When a meteor crashes in the middle of nowhere, it creates a huge hole in the earth. Two scientists take a look at this and find that there are creatures inside this meteor. These aliens cannot survive in oxygen, so when some are let out of their own atmosphere they die. The two scientists plan to use these creatures to become famous and discover something never seen before. But before long a team from the government have sealed off the area and wont let them inside. Among these is a doctor (Jullian Moore), at first she dosen't support the scientists but later realises that they are only doing whats best and go's along with them. But they don't realise...

Join the Evolution Revolution

Advantages: Great gags, great characters
Disadvantages: The accident-prone scientist joke wore a bit thin

...Moore) to save the day. Evolution will be compared to the likes of Ghostbusters, Men In Black, Jurassic Park…with the merest hint of the X-Files (mainly due to Duchovny and a couple of in-jokes). To be fair, it does take a lot of the best aspects from these films, even if the end result is less fantastic than any of the above. But comparisons aside, it all works splendidly. The interaction between the two lead characters (Duchovny & Jones) is what makes the film and is thoroughly enjoyable, however Duchovny’s love-interest (Moore) doesn't work so well. Watch out for Seann William Scott too, who puts in a fine performance as the dopey fireman-wannabe who is first on the scene of the meteor.
