ATS - Exhaustingly Good
Advantages: Fast Service, Courteous Service
Disadvantages: Garages will differ around the UK
...**Please note the following ATS-Euromaster review is based around the service and products received from the ATS Garage in Newbury, Berkshire.**
*Personal Background*
Earlier on this week I noticed my exhaust was producing a rather unique sounding boy racer noise, complete with a slight rattling of my exhaust box, so decided immediate action was required as I was due in Cardiff the following day. I decided to take my Citroen Saxo (51 reg.) to the local Kick Fit dealers as they had always provided a reputable service in the past, however after an initial free inspection they advised me that I required 3 new parts for my exhaust, an Intermediate Pipe, an Intermediate Silencer Box and a Rear Silencer Box.
However after consulting their catalogue of parts I was told the intermediate parts I needed were not obtainable from their...

Ebley tyres and exhaust
Advantages: cheap and great service
Disadvantages: none
...Having had the exhaust on the car go and tying it up with string as you do, we had to go and get a new one.
We telephoned around and you would not believe the difference in price. We were limited as to how far we could drive with it tied up so could not go to a large town and had to make do with Cirencester and a choice of three places.
At Kwik fit we were quoted at "just over £100" and at ATS they said it will be £110 plus £15 if the manifold bolts and springs are hard to get off - now you can buy these in places like Halfords for £6.00.
Then we telephoned the cheapest which was Ebley. They said £75.00.
On arrival there we found that they had to send for it from their other branch and this would take an hour. But, if we wanted to have a look around the town they would drive us there and pick us up. Now that is service.
Also...

Tyred? Exhausted? Avoid Kwik Fit! *UPDATED*
Advantages: Brake parts insured for life of car
Disadvantages: Very poor workmanship
...a couple of negative reports, they seem to have cleaned up their image.
I was greeted at the reception desk by a mechanic, complete with his trademark blue "Kwik Fit" overalls. After explaining the noise, he informed me of the Kwik Fit Brake Check.
"It's a complete check of your breaking system, and the cost of the service will be deducted from any work that needs doing." I was also presented with a leaflet explaining all that had just been said.
It sounded alright, so I left my car with them.
The reception area and visible workshop were very clean, and well equiped to cope with any of the services that they offer. The branch I went to also sell and fit tyres, exhausts, and shock absorbers.
About an hour later, I got the dreaded phone call...
"Hi it's **** from Kwik Fit. I've got some bad news I'm afraid - the noise you were hearing...

Exhausted I sure am now
Advantages: nil
Disadvantages: not honest
...ATS well advertised, yes, a large company, yes, good reputation, reliable and honest? Answer NO.
Well that is my humble opinion. I recently owned a small citroen AX motor car and the exhaust started to corrode, blow me I thought, the exhaust was only fitted by ATS in High Wycombe less than four months ago! So, off I went with receipt back to ATS where, on the ramp I noticed that the exhaust had completely cracked in half under the manifold area. Unusual I thought, must have had a bad exhaust, maybe made on a Friday night. Anyway, I went for a walk around the shops while the fitter, who I should add was the same fitter who fitted the complete new one four months earlier, replaced the exhaust parts for a new one again.
Off I go, but to my surprise, about one month later it blows again, can't believe my bad luck, two faulty exhausts! How...

Exhaust for my old banger-no problem
Advantages: Great friendly service. Great price.Brilliant
Disadvantages: None for me.
...Two weeks ago my old but well loved Rover 6 2.3 Honda engine decided it was time to blow its exhaust. Now on the sunny Isle of Sheppey you aint got much choice about where to go unless you have lived here for years and have insider knowledge.Everything is at Sheerness. I knew that there was a Quik Fit there as I pass it when I go to Tesco's.
I phoned them in the morning at about 9.30 on my day off from work. The guy on the other end of the phone quoted me a price for bothe the front end and the back of the exhaust, just in case it had all blown. He said to bring the car up and they would check it out. If they had an exhaust in stock they would fit it straight away, if not, they would get one in.
I got up there by around 10.45. They checked under the car and let me have a look. It was the rear silencer that had blown.
They...

I swapped my rice for spaghetti
Advantages: Raucous, rebellious, reliable....brings out the rascal in you
Disadvantages: It aint 'alf hot mum
...a heavily worked on ZZR1100 and I thought I?d got good at handling that?. mastering the art, having reached 150mph in two nano-seconds, of how to get a 500lbs bedstead round the approaching corner, but it all pales into insignificance compared to the Duc?s glue like adhesion to the tarmac at angles that would make most things at Alton Towers feel like a go on a restricted moped.
Performance - I haven?t really tried to max it out but certainly 130mph + anyday (on the autobahn, of course), overall probably not absolutely the fastest thing on two legs, but still plenty fast enough to win a seat in front of the local magistrate. The acceleration coupled with the heart warming induction roar from the motor and that legendary Ducati window shaking exhaust reverb more than compensate for any lack of top speed in the total fun and grin factor stakes...

Monster Mania
Advantages: Looks gorgeous
Disadvantages: Reliability
...At one time a Ducati was one of the motorbikes to have. I can?t tell you for certain what made the Ducati name so prestigious, but it was probably a combination of things. Back in the early ?90s when Kawazaki?s green team were winning all the races, Ducati were lucky if they could get a bike to finish a race and if they did they were nearly always last. But even then the Ducati still held an attractive quality. I?m not sure whether it was because it was Italian or (which is more likely) because of it?s distinctive twin cylinder rumble which meant you felt it coming (clean those dirty minds!!) before you saw it. When all the other bikes were whizzing past with their high pitched revs, you could barely make out the different makes, but the Ducati was always recognisable just from the sound of it.
Some years later the 916 started...

Exhausting
Advantages: Spectacular war movie
Disadvantages: Too long
...We sat through three hours of this 'epic blockbuster' and came away totally exhausted. Apparently this movie is the most expensive ever made and I can see why, with all the battle scenes and everything. I had heard that the critics had panned this movie so I was prepared for the worst, but despite the somewhat shallow storyling and the technical inaccuracies, I still quite enjoyed the movie.
The story centres around a romance between a pilot Rafe McCawley played by Ben Affleck and a nurse called Evelyn, played by Kate Beckinsale. Rafe McCawley goes to help the Allies before America is involved in the Second World War and he is shot down and everyone believes him to be dead. In his absence his best friend Danny played by Josh Hartnett falls in love with Evelyn.
This romance is set against the growing fear of war in the Pacific...

Oh really...that fast officer
Advantages: Super cool and sexy
Disadvantages: How Much!!
...mate says its like sitting on a bath sponge, but this bike isn?t about nice cups of tea and chocolate biscuits.
The power curve on this bike is great, it drops off a tiny bit about 8000 rpm but its not really noticeable. And it?s more than fast enough for any rider with those 140 horses between your legs and its good for 165+ where permitted of course ;).
Ducati really have plastered this bike with carbon fibre as well with the lower fairing, tail piece, bellypan, airbox, chain guard, front and rear mudguards, exhaust heat guards, underseat heat shield all made from it. That means this bike is much lighter than previous versions, combined with the tubular steel chassis it makes for a very exhilarating ride, lean it as far as you dare.
But unfortunately all this Italian mastery doesn?t come cheap retailing at around £18000 and second...

Living with a 748 everyday
Advantages: stunning looks, feel, brakes and grunt
Disadvantages: Its crashed and I need a new one
...transport to work 5 days a week and to play on at weekends. Given the reliability questions over Ducati's a risky buy perhaps? As it turned out it wasn't. Putting 10,000 miles on it without another problem. The bike did the commute to work everyday through town rain or shine fine. The under-seat exhausts kept me warm in the winter too, maybe to much in the summer traffic. The brakes are another strong point not just when your out playing, but in traffic I was saved more than once from a driver door at 30mph by the sharp front end. The back it must be said is not the best. As for the handling this is wasted if confined to towns. Out in the country side clean and twisty flowing roads are were it belongs.
When my major servicing was carried out this was the only real issue I had. The comfort wasn't that bad, the reliability with mine wasn't to bad...
