Got a Floppy Disk?

External Hard-drive fit for rugged adventures

...they have less than what they state. For e.g. a 320 GB hard-drive will have about 290 GB, which is quite a chunk away from the stated amount. So, looking at the LaCie external hard-drive you will be looking at a memory capacity of 230-240 GB, which in this case is not a large chunk, but is still considerable. There is no known reason why all hard-drives (including the LaCie) have less memory than stated, it may be due to the internal disk within the outer case not being able to hold the stated amount or it may be that company's want to make a profit out of its customers. No on really knows. If you don't believe me about the memory capacity of a hard drive being less than stated, you can yourself check your hard-drives capacity by going into 'My Computer' and then right clicking the computer hard-drive icon and going into its properties...

I figured I was hardly using any of the storage anyway so thought a 16GB alternative would suffice. Maxtor 3100 external hard disk is getting too old

...The Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 is a line of external hard disks produced by Maxtor but eventually taken over by Seagate (which I suppose ATE Maxtor finally!). The fact that Seagate deals with the former Maxtor products is good because they have a very good customer service. I'm reviewing the 80GB one because it's the one I have in my hands right now. I bought it years ago for a fair price, nowadays I doubt they would even sell you one with so little capacity. The HD inside is an 80GB IDE (also known as P-ATA). Smaller capacity also means a smaller buffer, the 80GB has an 8MB buffer which is quite enough for its 80GB. Now I looked around a fair bit on the internet about how different the performance was between using USB 2.0 and firewire and there doesn't really seem to be a solid conclusion: Both methods are pretty fast (at about 15 MB/s in my experience) and certainly more computers tend to have USB than firewire, but firewire is supposed to have less of a drain on the cpu when transferring data, so this would be good if you are doing cpu-intensive tasks such as encoding video to the external disk (as I do with my camcorder). ...I brought the SanDisk Sansa Clip 2gb black about 3 months ago from Amazon for £34.99 including postage and packaging. Its is very small, just 2 inches long and 1 inch wide. It has a small display screen at the top, with blue and yellow text. The lower half of the device has a dial with play, pause, fast forward, rewind and stop. The volume controls and on/off and hold buttons are on the side. It came in a box with the mp3 player, headphones, pc connecting cable and instructions. I shopped around before buying as I wanted a small mp3 player, but didn't want to spend too much money. I considered the i pod shuffle, but decided against it as I didn't like the fact it had no screen. This is what attracted me to the SanDisk, and the fact that it is so easy to use.
