A great budget external hard drive

Advantages: Good price available on the web. Quiet. Plug and play.
Disadvantages: Isn't really that portable. Bulky.

...Having learned the lesson that all essential data should be backed up the hard way a few years ago, I decided to purchase an external hard drive to do this job. I didn?t require a massive one, as I only wanted to back up pictures, music and documents, so I had a look around some local computer shops as well as on the web. I didn?t really require one of these new all singing all dancing models, and didn?t really want to pay a small fortune for it. After looking for a while I came across an older model, the Seagate 320GB External Hard Drive, which cost a very reasonable £30, although you do have to search around a bit to find one. Now Seagate are known for their very minimalist packaging, and so it proved, as the drive arrived in a smallish black recyclable cardboard box with just the Seagate logo on one side of it. Core 1.5TB external hard drive from Maplin

Advantages: Excellent value for money
Disadvantages: none

...This external hard drive was bought for storing all our digital photos, as the hard drive in the laptop was getting over-full. I placed my order with Maplins quite late on a Friday. The ordering process was simple and quick, the hard drive was despatched the next working day (in this case, the following Monday), and arrived on the Wednesday. The postal packaging was only a large jiffy bag but the hard drive survived the trip so no complaints. The drive itselfis in a black plastic case which is shiny on the top & two sides: of course this soon looks less shiny as it attracts all the dust within a few feet, as well as picking up fingerprints and numerous small scratches - none of which affects the performance, but personally I'd prefer a matt or satin surface which would show less wear & tear. It's not too big, measuring 19cm x 12cm...

External Hard Drive Fun

Advantages: Size, Easy to Use, Quick, Simple

...This small external hard drive is very similar to some of the portable flash/pen drives that are going around at the moment. When I bought it a couple of years ago I was very impressed with what it could do making it easy to take files back and forth no matter where I went on a day to day basis.
