...During my final year of uni, this little gem turned out to be a Godsend. Doing a course which required a lot of camera work, I needed somewhere to store all the raw footage, which anyone who's ever worked with footage from a high quality video camera knows, takes up a hell of a lot of space. So I needed somewhere to keep it locked away safely to take around from uni computer to uni computer. My weapon of choice for an external hard drive was the Lacie Desktop Hard Disk 320 GB. Great capacity hard disk for the price, stylish and simple too.

Advantages: Great Value, very reliable
Disadvantages: Short cables, and shows up fingerprints

...I purchased the LaCie 1TB as my first external hard drive, about 6 months ago. I wasn't sure how much space I would be needing, but as the LaCie was on offer for £75 for 1TB I couldn't really resist. The promotional literature for this Hard disk seems to keep reminding us that it was designed by Neil Poulton, someone who I'm not aware of, but must be pretty good judging by the design of this product. It is rare when talking about an external hard drive that style is a talking point, but in this case it is. It's a sleek black elegant looking case, very very shiny. At the front there is a small strip of blue light that activates whenever the hard drive is turned on, everything else it on the panel at the back (on switch, connectors and vent) making the device very uncluttered and minimalist. External Hard-drive fit for rugged adventures

Advantages: Fast transfer speed, protection from knocks and drops
Disadvantages: Fairly high price

...they have less than what they state. For e.g. a 320 GB hard-drive will have about 290 GB, which is quite a chunk away from the stated amount. So, looking at the LaCie external hard-drive you will be looking at a memory capacity of 230-240 GB, which in this case is not a large chunk, but is still considerable. There is no known reason why all hard-drives (including the LaCie) have less memory than stated, it may be due to the internal disk within the outer case not being able to hold the stated amount or it may be that company's want to make a profit out of its customers. No on really knows. If you don't believe me about the memory capacity of a hard drive being less than stated, you can yourself check your hard-drives capacity by going into 'My Computer' and then right clicking the computer hard-drive icon and going into its properties...

Maxtor 3100 external hard disk is getting too old

Advantages: useful for backups

...The Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 is a line of external hard disks produced by Maxtor but eventually taken over by Seagate (which I suppose ATE Maxtor finally!). The fact that Seagate deals with the former Maxtor products is good because they have a very good customer service. I'm reviewing the 80GB one because it's the one I have in my hands right now. I bought it years ago for a fair price, nowadays I doubt they would even sell you one with so little capacity. The HD inside is an 80GB IDE (also known as P-ATA). Smaller capacity also means a smaller buffer, the 80GB has an 8MB buffer which is quite enough for its 80GB. Review of Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 80 GB

A very handy external hard disk!

Advantages: Large and fast removable storage.
Disadvantages: Can get a bit warm during operation.

Now I looked around a fair bit on the internet about how different the performance was between using USB 2.0 and firewire and there doesn't really seem to be a solid conclusion: Both methods are pretty fast (at about 15 MB/s in my experience) and certainly more computers tend to have USB than firewire, but firewire is supposed to have less of a drain on the cpu when transferring data, so this would be good if you are doing cpu-intensive tasks such as encoding video to the external disk (as I do with my camcorder). I've found both types of connection to work well and not had any problems (a cable for each type was supplied, but note that laptops almost always have a smaller firewire...

Build Quality This is an inexpensive 1TB (approximately 1000 GB) disc in a stylish compact case: 4.6 x 7.6 x 1.8 inches, which is actually slightly larger than the previous Porsche designed models, so it doesn't stack neatly with them. Very reliable DVD and Hard Disk recorder

Advantages: Easy to set up. Good quality pictures from weak signals.
Disadvantages: A little fiddly to use.

Saving the past on hard disk

...As I was going to move home I wanted to finally get shot of a very large number of Betamax tapes that had been gathering dust while waiting for a decent and cheap hard disk recorder. I didn't want to use any kind of tapes any more. I'd previously owned a LiteOn DVD +RW recorder but discovered that it was unreliable at recording discs. This was not just a problem of that recorder but with DVD in general being prone to making failed coaster discs if there was a fingerprint or mark on the blank disc. ...I received this external hard disk drive for Christmas, having had the dreaded 'low on disk space' warning on my computer for a good few weeks. It was presented in a relatively big box, and I was very relieved (and also surprised) to see how small it actually is! The instructions were straight forward "Plug it in, and watch it go!", and within a minute of plugging it in I received the reassuring "A new piece of hardware has been discovered" notification on the desktop.
