Possibly the best lens I own for my DSLR - The Canon 50mm F/1.8
Advantages: Lightweight, cheap
Disadvantages: None
...This is possibly the best lens I own for my Canon EOS 30D DSLR. (And for £65 what a bargain!)
This is an incredibly light lens, and as I understand it, it is made entirely from plastic. It might feel a little too light, but believe me, it's a well constructed lens which yields fabulous results. It's also very cheap in comparison to other prime lenses, and I would consider it much better value for money than the 50mm f/1.4
As a prime lens, 50mm fixed, f/1.8 it can be used in relatively low light without a flash since it lets so much light through to the camera... Shorter exposure times means your subject has less time to move. It also has a pretty shallow depth of field, so a perfectly focussed subject can have a wonderfully blurred background.
The tiny box this comes in contains the lens, front and rear caps, and a small leaflet...

The 'Plastic Fantastic'
Advantages: Very Light, Very Cheap, Awesome Image Quality, f/1.8 = Low light performace
Disadvantages: Noisy Focusing, Plastic Construction
...Hello Reader,
I hope you're doing well, and I thought I'd get a nice lens review in here, as it's been quite desolate for a while. The lens that will be under the microscope will be the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, which is a budget lens, although it with-holds a very nice surprise. So here goes...
Initial Impressions
Firstly, a new user to this lens will probably notice the amazingly compact size and weight of this lens, it's amazing really. I'm using it on my Canon 400D, and compared to the Kit lens, this thing is tiny! I'd say that this is a good factor for this lens, it's size and weight really complements the compact body of the 400D, and contrary to many peoples beliefs, the main lens body is surprisingly sturdy, at least at a parallel with the Kit lens. (18-55). There are quite a few reasons I bought this lens:

Possibly the best lense for your camera????
Advantages: Size, weight, fast max f stop, nikon quality
Disadvantages: non
...I have a 70mm to 300mm Sigma zoom and a 28mm to 80mm sigma zoom and this small standard 50mm lens.
The lens costs about £90 new or around the £50 on E Bay.
For everyday photography, I don't think it can be beaten.
The two main advantages are its size and its maximum aperture of f1.8. For the peeps that don't know anything bout photography....the smaller the no. on the lens, the more light it can let in...hense f1.8 being better for available light photography indoors than the f5.5 on one of my zoom lenses.
The small/lightweight standard lense on your camera will drastically reduse the risk of blurred pictures due to 'camera shake' because a zoom lense makes the camera more unstable and magnefies any camera shake..the bigger the zoom the worse it is.
This smallness coupled with being able to use the high aperture to let...

The standard lens that isn't so standard
Advantages: tack sharp, good optical quality, fast focus
Disadvantages: plastic case and mount, not USM
...noticeably sharper than with a "standard" zoom, even at normal print size.
2) Focussing speed. The autofocus on this lens is fast, certainly faster than on a "standard" zoom. This means you are more likely to get the picture you want, in focus.
3) Depth of field. Most zoom lenses have a maximum aperture (also called f-stop) of 3.5 - 5.6. This is a relatively small maxiumum aperature and means that if you were to take a portrait you might find it difficult to make the background blurred to bring attention to the subject. This lens has a maximum aperture of f1.8 which will give you a field of focus of a couple of meters, allowing you to blur the background and improve the composition of your pictures.
Cost is another factor supporting this lens. Most standard zooms are in excess of £150. This lens is around £80 to buy new, or about £50 on e...

The nikon 50mm 1.8 - a fantastic portrait lens
Advantages: great quality, low price, prime
Disadvantages: none
...As anyone interested in photography will know - lenses don't come cheap, especially quality lens, except this one.
The 50mm 1.8 has a reputation for quality at a reasonable price and it's a reputation well deserved.
Yes the 50mm is a 'small' lens but it's a prime lens.
Some may find that the need for them to move forwards or backwards to get the correct composition for a photograph is too irritating to make the purchase worthwhile over that of a zoom lens but the increase of quality combined with the price makes that an opinion that I beg to differ.
If you shoot portraits, or are looking to start then the 50mm 1.8 will prove an invaluable piece of equipment, but it's uses are not limited to portraits only.
At 1.8 the 50mm is a fast lens however it dies have a counterpart - the 50mm 1.4. The 1.4 is, by comparison, alot more expensive...

Best lens I have
Advantages: Perfect picture quality, fast and silent
Disadvantages: Prime... Zoom and Dezoom with your feet
...I bought this lens to do portrait work but then I find myself using it more and more for every kind of pictures, compressed landscape, flower, nature, anything really. The quality of the pictures is just too great to miss. This lens is well balanced on a 40d (it would be on a rebel also). It doesn't feel too big or too small. You have USM focus, which means fast and silent. The size of the focus ring is good, you won't have difficulty using it in manual mode. This lens is not L, but the mount is metal and it does not feel cheap at all. I've had it for 1 year and There is no dust at all in the lens. I use this on a 40d, and I usually have to back up a little to take the pictures, it is a little long. I don't mind it though, if you ever buy this lens, you won't mind either and you will work around the fact that this is not a zoom; you won...

Mazda 323 F 1.8 G.Ti D.O.H.C. 1989
Advantages: Unique styling, Jap reliability, very fast, hugs the bends well.
Disadvantages: No air con' , no ABS, parts expensive. ( with this particular modle )
...exchanged , I got it home.
The car was a pig sty, covered in mud, and stunk of wet dogs inside, first job was to power wash the outside + engine, then shampoo...... every seat, carpet and the roof lining, T-cut & polish....... What a transformation, the Mazda looked a (million), well, a few hundred dollars !! . Next job .. MOT to find the horrors. The only problems were - blowing rear tail box and nacked front tyre, rest .... perfect !!. The only other problem I could find was a cracked metal power steering pipe, alowing slow loss of the fluid, more of a niggle than a major prob', but wipped it off anyway and soldered up the weak spot. I recon to buy a new length of the looped run of pipe would cost in excess of £50.
Problems sorted and we're off ( finaly ! ) . This little car is great ! , recently found out it is a series 1, G.T, no CAT...

Canaons little Gem
Advantages: Cheap, Sharp, small
Disadvantages: Plastic build
...Canons budget 50mm is a star of a lens. It?s cheap, well built (although plastic) and takes brilliant photos. What more could you ask from a lens?
I have used this lens now for just over a year now and it is one of my favourites. A versatile little number, that is always in my kit bag. I have used it for Band shots, where the aperture speed is essential, and it works brilliantly. For portraits where the depth of field adds so much and just as a basic lens for almost anything I can think of, and in all circumstances it is a cracking lens, that creates tack sharp images. The low 1.8 aperture is as sharp as can be and unlike some lenses it does not need stepping up to find the sweet spot.
My only gripe would be that its predecessor the mark 1 was a solid metal number and this mark 2 is only constructed from plastic, which that said, mine...

Small is Beautiful
Advantages: Size, price, video quality
Disadvantages: DVD creating due to fps rate
...memory cards, which is great for transferring footage. A big disappointment is that a SD card is not included in the price.
I do have a problem with the fact the HD1000 records at 30 or 60 fps, while the 60fps is great for fast action and plays back incredibly smoothly on a PC the UK PAL TVs use 25 or 50fps, so a DVD playback can look jerky. You have to make some adjustments when editing and burning the DVD.
On a positive note I was really impressed with the Image Stabilization, which works for stills and video. HD can show up a shaky hand and with such a small unit it could be even worse for the HD1000, but the software did a good job of removing my wobbles.
Some specs:
Full 1080i HD Recording
10x Optical (f/1.8) HD Zoom Lens
2.7" Widescreen Display
4 Mega pixel still photos
HDMI high-definition output
MPEG4 AVC/H.264...
