Lovely Hotel In The Heart Of Ambleside

Advantages: Location, pool, nice rooms, excellent food, excellent service
Disadvantages: None that spring to mind

...I have stayed here once with my wife just before they finished putting the pool and spa center in. We went in on the off chance one night when we had gone to Ambleside for the day and decided we fancied staying the night as we do quite often!! We had our dog with us and didn't really expect to find anywhere that would take dogs,we had tried a couple of places first, but on asking at the Salutation we were surprised to find that they would. We were also given a room with a nice big balcony to let the dog out on, although we were charged £12 for the night for her. Location ********** We had always fancied staying at The Ambleside Salutation, having been to Ambleside and walked past it numerous times. It really is very well located right in the middle of Ambleside on the bend in the road near The White Lion pub, and in easy walking...

Review of Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel, Ambleside

Churchill Hotel, Ambleside

Advantages: Good location, great rooms
Disadvantages: Bad parking facilities, smokey bar

...out of the window. Although the cramped dining area still smelled of stale cigarette smoke, breakfast was a good, hearty full English. The morning staff are lovely and very accommodating, but the chef could learn to cook the toast properly and not burn one side... (The 'terrible' family friendly rating is due to lack of cots (they may be available but certainly aren't advertised) and also because you have to drag your child through a smoke-infested bar every time you want to enter or leave the building.) All in all, our stay was fairly poor, though the modern rooms and proximity to local shops and attractions do make up some of the failings in other areas....

The safest room in the house!

Advantages: Brilliant story, completely captivating
Disadvantages: No special features on the one disc DVD

...Panic Room is a thriller starring Jodie Foster from 2002. It runs for approximately 112 minutes & is rated 15. It received a mainly positive reception from the critics. It grossed an estimated $196,397,415 at the box office on a budget of $48,000,000. Panic Room is directed by David Fincher who is famous for working with Brad Pitt on films such as; Fight Club, Se7en & The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. He also worked on serial killer thriller The Zodiac. The main star of this film is Jodie Foster who I?m sure most of you will have heard of but if you haven?t she?s starred in films such as; Silence Of The Lambs, The Brave One, Freaky Friday & Taxi Driver. Panic Room is about Meg Altman, a recently divorced woman who moves into a new home with her 12 year old diabetic daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart). The house isn?t just...

Panic Room

Advantages: Scary - Good
Disadvantages: Some weird acting

...Panic Room Panic Room is the story of a mother and daughter who moved into a huge brand new A three floor house with CCTV in every room, a lift, and a panic room. Wow how amazing. Now, their first night in the house they end up getting broken into by three men who are after a certain something in the house. And the three men thought the house was empty so they broke in - but when they found out there was someone living in the house, 2 of the 3 men set out to kill them, just so they could get what they were after. The noise of the men in the house woke the mother, so she checked out the CCTV to find the men wandering about her house, but when she tries to escape the men chase her up the stairs. She runs for her daughter in the top floor then gets the lift back down, and they end up hiding in the panic room, where they can get...

The Wonderful Old Vicarage in Ambleside

Advantages: Pool, sauna, jacuzzi, breafast, great rooms
Disadvantages: Parking tricky with large car, but at least they have a car park!

...The Old Vicarage is probably the best B&B I can ever remember staying at! They have plenty of off-road parking for guests, even if it does require a little manouvering if you have a larger car, everything else certainly makes up for that. The owners are extremely lovely, welcoming people and really make you feel at home. I love the fact they also let dogs in and that their own dogs are allowed around the house. The rooms are also stunning, wonderfully decorated with nice views and very comfortable and relaxing. The swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi in the basement are the perfect thing after a day on the hills or mulling around the shops. The highlight of the stay, for me, was the superb breakfast we had, I couldn't find a thing to fault. All in all, an absolutely wonderful stay, would highly recommend it (if you can find time when...

Family Fortunes!

Advantages: A great read
Disadvantages: none

...I have always enjoyed Rowan Coleman's books so I'm always pleased when I spot a new one of hers. I was especially pleased when I picked up The Accidental Family because I realised it is a sequel to one of her earlier books - The Accidental Mother. I had read this a while ago and really enjoyed it so it was interesting to see what happened to the characters afterwards. Having said that though, The Accidental Family can be read as a stand alone novel although it does have an added value if you read The Accidental Mother first. In the first book Sophie Mills suddenly finds herself looking after her best friend's two daughters after a fatal car accident. At the end of the book, the girls' long lost father has reappeared and Sophie has fallen in love with him. They all move to Cornwall and this second book follows what happens as they start...

Dear Room

Advantages: honest and thought provoking.
Disadvantages: some work maybe seen as to short.

...about forgeting and things moving on, it covers the changing face of a house he used to wait ouside day after day. Secondly is the title poem 'Dear Room' as you may expect this is the longest in the book covering three pages, this covers the story of the goings on of a room over the years and its first use as a childs play area for games to be played everyday to it gathering dust in lated life and becoming used less and less. Third is 'Helter-Skelter' this doesnt really need any explaination! It is a lighthearted story of a helter skelter through the eyes of the Author when he was a child. Forth is 'Horse and Dolphine Yard' which is a short piece about the author remembering apart of his childhood growing up in china. Fith is 'Party Tricks' quite an adult themed one this one so i'll leave it at that! Sixth is 'Tell' and is a short piece about...

Review of Dear Room - Hugo Williams

What a family!

Advantages: Everything.
Disadvantages: None.

...This review is of the complete first series of My Family, on DVD. Copyrighted BBC 1996, it holds the rating of Parental Guidance (PG) due to mild swearing and references to sexual activities or similar. The main storyline is around the Harper family, who live in suburban London. They are as follows: Ben Harper (Robert Lindsay): the dad, and a dentist. Just likes to be left alone to watch the TV, read the paper and drink beer (but in no particular order). Thinks that he is the vice of reason in the family, but is constantly being proved otherwise. Susan Harper (Zoe Wanamaker): the mum, who is a tour guide and (she thinks) a gourmet cook. Wants to be involved in her children's lives, but is constantly reminded by their actions that she is unable to reason with them on their level. Nick Harper (Kris Marshall): the eldest son...

Keeping me in touch with my Family and Friends

Advantages: Unlimited calls between 4 or 6 vodafone numbers (max 60mins call)
Disadvantages: Only between vodafone numbers, no reminders if on PAYG

...Vodafone Family (& Friends) is a nice little add-on available for both contract and Pay As You Go users of the network. For just £5 a month unlimited calls can be made between up to four different Vodafone numbers, and if bigger group is required then there is the option to increase the group to six for £7 a month. I?ve been using the family option for a couple of years now, starting on Pay As You Go (PAYG) and then continuing when I moved on to contract. Set up on PAYG is a little convoluted, it took me quite some time to get through the options and the phone needs £5 of credit on it before the group can be created (£7 for a group of 6). It?s a good idea to write down the numbers you want to add to the group before calling 2345 and working your way through the options. As soon as the group is created £5 (or £7) is deducted from your...

The Common Room, Sheffield

Advantages: Good atmosphere, long opening hours
Disadvantages: Not everyones sort of thing

...It's not often that I am overly impressed by the new bars that open in Sheffield. They come and go frequently and often change names overnight. The Common Room is however one such place that I did walk into and say "wow!" because its discreet entrance offers no hint of what is to be found inside. Located on Devonshire Street next to The Forum shopping complex this is a place that lies right in the heart of the city centre's student quarter. The Forum shopping complex has built up a reputation in recent years as a place to hang out and be seen and there are many small expensive boutique style shops whilst The Forum bar is a frequent haunt of the city's pop stars (past and present) and you even might spot a footballer or too as well. The Common Room opened in 2006 and occupies the area above both The Forum Bar and the shopping centre...
