White Noise...... Bored Stiff

Advantages: Great performances and decent direction
Disadvantages: A real missed oppertunity, scipt could have been developed so much better.

...This weekend saw a rare night out to the cinema. We decided to see White Noise as it seemed to be focussed on an interesting subject matter. The film deals with Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP from now), where in a simple form Spirits contact the living through Static. It looked to be an interesting film and when it was suggested to me on Friday we both thought it would be something we?d enjoy. I?m starting to enjoy Horror films more these days and couldn?t see why I wouldn?t enjoy this, there is a lot of potential in the subject matter alone. It starts off with the perfect American family. Jonathan (Michael Keaton) lives in a beautiful house with a white picket fence. Even his new wife and his Ex get on and his son seems to like everybody. When his new wife announces she?s pregnant you just know something is about to happen to one...

Empty Vessels Make the Most Noise

Advantages: There are some scary moments
Disadvantages: The script, lack of direction, appalling performances, hackneyed score

...though he?s trying to give people peace of mind. The score is another misfire in the movie, opting for clichéd solo violins and pianos in an unsuccessful attempt to ratchet up the tension. The by-the-numbers ?Tubular Bells? rip-off over the opening titles is about as interesting as it gets. Overall ?White Noise? can be seen as a catalogue of missed opportunities. With a stronger script, as firmer directorial hand and some decent performances, this could have been a hit. Instead, the pedestrian pacing, phoned-in performances, headache-inducing editing, abrupt shifts in genre and tone, more plot holes than a cemetery and lack of thrills make this film less inviting than sitting on front of your TV and watching real white noise. This will only appeal to you if you are a hardcore fan of supernatural series like ?Dead Famous?. Otherwise save...

So I thought I would also review the Greenwich Fan Museum as it would compliment the previous review nicely. The Fan Museum at Greenwich is the first and only museum to be dedicated to fans. It was founded by Helene Alexander in 1991 to share her life long passion for the subject. She has a collection of 3500 objects which are not all on show at the same time due to the fragility of many of the fans. It's housed in two adjoining skilfully restored Georgina houses on Royle Hill in the centre of Greenwich. The museum is just opposite the north western corner of Greenwich Park just round the corner from the Maritime Museum. The Analysis of Noise Trading

Advantages: Immersive, massive electronica-cum-breakbeat-cum-ambient-cum-everything

...reviews seem to think it a hybrid of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) and Industrial. I think that it is somehow a little bit of all three - and then some. And then some more. As I investigated the reviews I came across a phrase that is the best place to start reviewing The Analysis Of Noise Trading: "Architect's newest album is not one for the meek or the mild". Yep, that hits the old nail right on the head. The Analysis Of Noise Trading is loud, it is full of overlapping rhythms, of beats, of random sounds, of samples, of distortion, of glitches. Yes, it is heavily industrial, it is immersive, the sound is large, sometimes booming but it is also fluid, controlled, beautifully constructed and the whole album works as a piece: it might jag and jar within tracks but the whole album just cascades before the senses. And it is not boorish...

Dimplex convection heater with turbo fan

Advantages: Turbo Fan, secure wall mounting, switchable turbo fan
Disadvantages: Mechanical thermostat with turbo fan can be attention grabbing!

..., the manual shows you distances for the brackets and the method on how to hang the heater. Performance is quite impressive. There is a noticeable warm draft coming from the turbo fan. As the thermostat is mechanical it does switch the heater on and off while it is heating the room. The instruction manual advises putting the thermostat on full until the room is at the required temperature and then turn down the thermostat until the clicks off. It is a very simple and affective design but the regular clicking on and off of the thermostat may cause disturbance especially if using the turbo fan while trying to watch TV. The noise level of the turbo fan is similar to a microwave oven....

The audio was fantastic however, and despite it not having a particularly memorable soundtrack, the eerie happenings on screen were coupled with even more unsettling sound effects and music to create a frightening atmosphere whilst watching the film. Certain scenes in surround sound, with the help of Dolby Digital Surround Sound, were really chilling. Anamorphic Widescreen means that the film looks great in both widescreen and your conventional "box" television and if used, the subtitles are not too obstructive. ** I'm a huge fan of scary films and having seen near enough every single one on the plant, I would highly rate White Noise. I'm a big fan of THE FAN

Advantages: Well acted. Tense Drama
Disadvantages: Baseball setting might put some people off

...Before writing this review I checked to see if any others had been written about this movie.I found that two had been written both of which gave it a less than positive review.That left me thinking whether I had watched the same movie, as I thought it was very well put together. The only negative thing I could say about the movie is that it is set against the world of baseball, which I know will not be everyones favourite setting for a film. However, I think that the baseball setting is irrelivant in one way,as it could just as well have been set in the world of any major sport. The high profile sports setting is necessary in that the meat of the film is the stalking of a top sports personality by a Fan who carries an unhealthy love of both baseball and a particular player. Not a fan

Advantages: Helps you fall asleep
Disadvantages: Not an original or particulary good film

...Right from the opening credits this film looks promising: a scrapbook of film clippings flicker beneath the atonal recitation of a poem about baseball. The effect is truly eerie. After that, there's not an original moment in this film. Based on Peter Abrahams' book, The Fan chronicles the mental breakdown of a blue-collar chump obsessed with a baseball star. In this particular spin on the psycho fan theme, Robert DeNiro plays Gil Renard, a washed-up knife salesman with a failed marriage and an awkward relationship with his young son. Gil's one passion, outside of selling really good knives, is baseball. His team is the Giants and his hero is Bobby Rayburn, a hotshot hitter played by Wesley Snipes.
