Japan delivered to your door

Advantages: All things Japanese for the discerning British shopper
Disadvantages: In store labelling/signage isn't the best

....japancentre.com). *Japan Centre store* The 'supermarket' aspect of Japan Centre is a fascinating emporium of Japanese goods and products, full to the brim with a cornucopia of traditional and modern items from the other side of the world. They offer an unprecedented selection of dried and preserved goods - from rice and noodles to green tea, sauces and Japanese vegetables, to flavourings, panko breadcrumbs and the like. As well as this there is a good range of fresh and frozen goods, including tofu, miso, frozen edamame beans, vegetables and meat prepared for traditional Japanese meals (for example, wafer thin pork loin for sukiyaki). Their homewares selection also goes far beyond that of similar stores and it's the ideal place to go if you're looking for some new bowls for miso soup, a square frying pan for quick fried eggs, or a rice steamer for your...

Curious Customs: Tips for Visiting Japan, Part 2

Advantages: A great adventure
Disadvantages: Leave that handkerchief at home!

...'t be surprised to see a lot of people wearing these in the winter. If they need to blow their noses the Japanese will discreetly slip away to the toilet or somewhere else where they can't be seen to do it. I have to admit that I have seen people (usually youngsters) blowing their noses in public in Japan but the impression that blowing your nose in public will leave with the average Japanese person is much the same as if you had spat on the floor or deliberately and loudly farted. My advice on this subject is simple - don't do it! That concludes Part 2 of these traveller's tips. Thank you for reading thus far. Tip number 10, in splendid isolation, will follow soon in Part 3. Konnichiwa! Tips for Visiting Japan Part 3

Advantages: Successful communication feels like an achievement
Disadvantages: It pays to invest some time and effort

...the equivalent of our handshake and to some extent that is true. However, any visitor to Japan will soon notice that the Japanese seem to be bowing to each other constantly, certainly far more than we would shake hands in the west. The commonest occasions for the Japanese to bow are when they meet or greet someone, when they say goodbye, when they apologise and when they thank someone. The depth of the bow is very important in that some situations require a deeper bow than others. A "standard" bow to suit most occasions means bending your body about 15 degrees. When bowing to a friend of similar age and social standing the bow need often be little more than a nod of the head but a deeper bow should be given to someone older or of higher social status. The deeper the bow and the longer it is held, the more strongly it will convey a person's gratitude...

East or west?

Advantages: Funny, well-written
Disadvantages: Some apparently find it anti-Islam and racist

...the film - this is about the Khan family and their relationship rather than the position of the Khans in society - there is one recurring reminder that not everyone is accepting of 'foreigners'. This is Enoch Powell's face on posters, put up all over the town. For those of you who don't know, Enoch Powell is well known for his far right views on immigration. At one point, one of the Khans, the only daughter, kicks a football straight through a window into Enoch Powell's face - a nice touch, I thought, and very to the point. Despite the subject matter, this is a funny film. The Khan children are full of the joys of life and get into all sorts of scrapes behind their father's back. Ella brings a great deal of good old northeast English humour to the film in the way that she deals with her husband. It is perhaps this very humour that some have...

Go East!

Advantages: somewhere a bit different
Disadvantages: city boys & girls doing coke in the toilets

...Normally this section paragraph is where I write some witty (hopefully) mood setting babble, but this time, luckily for all of you review readers out there, there is no mood to set. So let's just get on with it, I am going to be reviewing Village East, it is where Snarf and I go when we can't be bothered to cook, or just want a quick drink, it is our closest drinking hole. Where is Village East? Village East is located on the fashionable Bermondsey Street, which is a very short walk from London Bridge Underground & Mainline station & about 5 mins from my front door. I have attached a map to help you all out. Why Should I go? There are plenty of reasons to be in this particular area of London, Village East is within a stones throw of many popular London attractions, such as Borough Market, The Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Tower...

Kyoto, the OLD capital of Japan.

Advantages: Cheap area, gorgeous attractions and temples, good for short visits!
Disadvantages: Limited activity so best for -5 day visits.

...I visited Japan at the end of this July, and have only just returned. I must say it was the holiday of a lifetime. Flights cost £900 each via British Airways. We visited Kyoto for 3 days. We got there via Shinkansen from Tokyo, and stayed at the New Miyako hotel, just over the road from Kyoto station. Kyoto was absolutely gorgeous and very easy to navigate around. You can get just about anywhere you want to from Kyoto Station. There are buses, subway trains etc. 220 yen is all you need for a bus ride to anywhere along the Kyoto bus lines. That works out at around £1. You just hop on the bus and pay when you get off. We visited Toei movie land which was a bit of a dissapointment. www.eigamura30.com. Looking at brochures we expected amazing movie scenes etc but it left a lot to be desired. A lot of it was shut off, and most...

Recommended places to visit in Japan

Advantages: Great places to visit, many things to do, new technologies
Disadvantages: some things are pricey especially the latest technologies, jet lag

...felt it was a "must see". We took a tram to the Peace Park. The first thing that we discovered in this part of the city was how much it looked like a British Columbian city with the backdrop of snow capped mountains and water all around. Hiroshima is effectively a series of islands. The water which borders the Peace Park helps to give it an air of tranquillity. The "A-dome" was at the epicentre of the bombing. It had been a municipal convention centre when it was struck. Now, a bricked wall leading upwards to the skeletal frame of the dome is all that remains. A sense of poignancy and sympathy is induced by the sculpture of two children sitting on a wall overlooking the river. It symbolised the innocence of youth. It is easy for anyone in the early part of the 21st Century to forget the horrors of the war in the Far East some 60...

East Midlands Airport

Advantages: Easily accessed, not too busy
Disadvantages: Not a huge range of destinations

...East Midlands Airport is a regional airport located in Castle Donington in Derbyshire. There are flights available to many European destinations, as well as Egypt, USA (Florida) and the Caribbean with charter airlines. I have flown from this airport many times and it is my favourite airport mainly due to it's location, ease of access and relaxed atmosphere. It is easily accessed by car from the M1 (Junction 23 and 23A) or the A50 which is the road I use when travelling from Staffordshire. I live around 50 miles from the airport but the A50 is a relatively quiet road so it's a nice 40 minute drive and I can start my holiday. I find it's easiest to travel to by car but there are local rail links and the airport can be reached from Loughborough, Derby and Nottingham railway stations, depending on where in the country you are...

EAST IS EAST

Advantages: Funny, good direction, excellent cast, good story
Disadvantages: Some may find some scenes disturbing

...Introduction ~~ East is East is another good recent British film. And like the majority of other good recent British films East is East was made by Filmfour. East is East is set in Salford, near Bradford in the 70's and it focuses around the antics of the Khan family. George Khan, the father was born in Pakistan and by marrying Ella who is English he moves to England. Then him and his English wife Ella have seven children in Salford. But that's where the problems start; his children. They simply want to be English and do what English people their age do and choose who they marry. And with a big difference in opinions between George and the children big problems arise? Story ~~ If you read the script for East is East you would think of it as quite a serious and dark film and with the scenes of domestic violence it is quite dark...
