Typical Teen Fare

Advantages: Pretty decent performances, suspenseful at times,
Disadvantages: Predictable, formulaic teen movie, apparently tries to be funny but I didn't feel that worked

.... - Genre/Themes etc. - This is a very typical teen suspense thriller movie. The themes are of privacy and voyeurism and of friendship to an extent. - My Thoughts/Opinions - This movie is, as mentioned above, a pretty typical teen suspense/thriller fare. It starts pretty slowly, making you wonder where (if anywhere) its going. Its got the usual elements, a guy who's bored and spots a 'hot new chick' that he fancies, who he tries to get close to and that also gets caught up in what happens. The horror, where applicable, is pretty crude too, so I certainly wouldn't say that its breaking new ground. I didn't find it all that scary for a 15 rated movie. Vacancy is a similar movie that was recently released on DVD too and I have to say, I prefer that to this. Once the suspense or horror part really kicks in, its not too bad...

A Fare to Remember...

Advantages: Entertaining, well-written and directed, good performances
Disadvantages: The ending - a bit too cliched

...As comedian Peter Kay once observed, most conversations between passengers and taxi drivers amount to the formulaic "Busy tonight?" or "What time do you finish?". No doubt LA cabbie Max (Jamie Foxx) would have been content with such small-talk on his latest fare, but instead he's saddled with hitman Vincent (Tom Cruise) who, in LA for one night only, asks Max to make 5 stops around the city - Vincent needs to make 5 killings after which Max will get a handsome tip and Vincent will be on the morning flight out. It's an intriguing, high-concept premise, and thankfully it's in the extremely capable hands of acclaimed director Michael Mann (Manhunter, The Insider, and one of the contenders for film of the 1990's - Heat). Mann has a track-record of providing top actors with great, meaty roles while his movies have a trademark moody...

Oh, those wonderful men in their flying machines

Advantages: A brilliant day out
Disadvantages: Quite expensive

...On Saturday the 2nd of June I took my family to the Biggen Hill Air Show (I'm not sure why the Ciao's heading is Air Fare - I'll get them to change it). The show runs for 2 days in June every year and is an all-day event. A family ticket cost me £32.00 which included parking and up to five in the car. Biggen Hill is off the Orpington bypass of the A21 in Kent and was very well signposted despite the weaving country lanes. The traffic into the show was well controlled and it did not take us long to gain entrance and park up. I would advise wearing sturdy shoes because the grass under foot is somewhat long and tough. And trying to roll a buggy across it can be a bit backbreaking as we found out but some of the public area is concrete. There was much more to see than just the air show but I'll start with that. ...Travelling to Manchester recently, and faced with a fare of almost £60 return on the train, I took a friend's advice and had a look at National Express. On approximately thirty services operating to and from London you can get 'Fun fares' that are exclusively available online as e-tickets. The prices are between £1-£10 per journey, thus I travelled to Manchester for the bargain price of £2 each way and there are no other restrictions and you can take the same amount of baggage. The journey time going up to Manchester was about one hour longer than the train leaving at the same time, and it was a further thirty minutes longer on the way home, so I felt that this was an excellent deal and bought my tickets. The coach has a WC on board and on the four and a half hour journey north we stopped for about 40 minutes at a service...

I was nearly a basket case with the tiredness by the time I got home to Dublin!!! ~ ~ In 1986 Ryanair “broke” this monopoly situation forever, when they started scheduled flights from Dublin to London for the then unheard of price of only £94.99 return. Aer Lingus at the time were charging £209 for the same route. Since that time the air fares between Dublin and the UK have dropped like a stone, and I’m sure many of you reading are only too aware of the great “bargain deals” that Ryanair now offer to anyone from the UK flying to Ireland. ...the National Enquirer. Jones is all seriousness as Agent K, a man who's literally been there and done that, and listened to Elvis while it was happening; Smith is at his streetwise best as K's partner J, who has an affinity for chasing down aliens and smack talking 50-foot-high giant bugs that have 70 million children (as the bug stares J down, he crushes a cockroach and asks 'Was that your auntie?'). I won't even begin to describe the over-the-top plot, but suffice it to say that the film's villain (Vincent D'Onofrio) is an intergalactic bug who inhabits the skin of a redneck farmer (Vincent D'Onofrio) and isn't real fond of humans, especially ones that hurt bugs. That kind of irreverent, 'anything goes' tone works well for "Men In Black", but unfortunately, the movie bogs down when it goes for standard summer action fare about halfway...
