Fargo - A very dark comedy

Advantages: Very good performances and darkly funny
Disadvantages: Some of the characters are a little one dimensional

Advantages: Funny, touching, dramatic, quirky - just plain brilliant
Disadvantages: Quite a bit of swearing and violence; you might not "get it"

Advantages: great funny film
Disadvantages: clunky menus, poor sound and film presentation

...Fargo was my introduction to the world of Coen brothers films and remains one of my favourite films from every genre. For those who haven't seen it you're missing out on a lot. A car salesman named Jerry Lundergaard (William H Macy) arranges for his wife to be kidnapped. His father in law happens to be wealthy so he hopes he'll be able to split the ransom with the hired kidnappers (Steve Buscemi & Peter Stormare). Unfortunately it all goes wrong when one of the kidnappers goes a bit crazy and events spiral out of control resulting in a few dead bodies. It's up to a heavily pregnant chief of police Marge Gunderson (Frances McCormand) to solve the case and set things to rights. The film is very funny. Advantages: Has many elements of a good film
Disadvantages: Just can't put them all together right really - and is torn by schizophrenia

I?d heard of Fargo by good reputation, but didn?t really know what to expect. I was pleased to see Steve Buscemi, as I think he?s great in Reservoir Dogs, Air Heads, Pulp Fiction, Things To Do In Denver When You?re Dead and the like. With what we knew of a kidnap plot, I hoped this would turn out to be a similar Tarantino-esque masterpiece. A gem of a film, ja?

Advantages: Dark comedy, great acting

...Introduction This is one of those films that doesn't leap out at you, but is a quiet classic. As can probably be expected of a film by Joel and Ethan Coen, it is understated, but has a wonderful depth of meaning and comedy underneath the surface, which means you need to watch the film more than once to get the full meaning. Fargo is a place in North Dakota, small town America, where much of the population's ancestors were Norwegian, Swedish and German. Hence, I presume, the use of ja throughout the film - the locals add it to the end of nearly every sentence. IT'S NOT TRUE (or is it?)

Advantages: Very very clever, very funny.
Disadvantages: If you've never experienced Minnesota Nice you might not get it

...As the seventh review of this DVD on here I don't propose to cover the story or characterisations in detail, but some of the earliler reviews included some confusing comments on the film. These mainly centre on the way the Coen Brothers decided to open Fargo with a flash card stating that: THIS IS A TRUE STORY. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred. This is a clever ruse! The viewer gets sucked into a gruesome series of events which are only credible against the 'Minnesota nice' backdrop due to this opening statement.
