Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Fay Weldon's Ball Of Fluff

Advantages: Gritty and dark, and familiarly Roeg
Disadvantages: I don't know if I liked it or hated it

...It's been near on 18 years since Nicholas Roeg made a movie for the mass audience, even though his return feature Puffball is unlikely to get much attention. Roeg picks up a novel by the ever popular Fay Weldon and delivers his own somewhat warped perspective of things, and it's a strange mix at that. Funded by the National Lottery, The Irish Film Fund, and a Canadian Television Channel; the movie then is kind of delivered to a Cornish based film unit, though the movie itself is set and filmed in Ireland. If you're unfamiliar with Fay Wheldon her novels usually cover witchcraft and the occult prime examples include TV or Movie versions of the novels Growing Rich and The Life And Loves Of The She Devil; but Wheldon has a comic view to her depictions, however Nicholas Roeg has no time for comedy. The older person's chick lit?

...I was recently embarrassed during a conversation with a friend when I hadn't heard of one of Fay Weldon's best-known books. To be honest, all I've ever known about Fay Weldon is that she wrote The Life and Loves of a She-Devil and apart from the fact it was televised at some stage, I've no idea what it's about. So I decided it was time to put this to rights and picked up a copy of this book from my local library - it caught my eye because of the bright pink and orange cover. Frankly, I don't know if this is typical of Fay Weldon's work, but if it is, I don't think I'll bother with any more of her novels. The story Grace McNab is in her fifties and has recently been released from prison after an attempt to run down her ex-husband's new wife, Doris Dubois. Doris is a thirty-something career woman with her own TV show. Beautiful...

.... Introduction Fay Weldon shot to fame in the 1980s when one of her books "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil" was made into a very successful TV drama. It was one of those rare classics that seldom appear on our TV screens and when they do they're never to be seen or heard from again. Although I have never read any of Weldon's books until now, I do remember her appearing from time to time on various chat shows or panel shows such as Question Time and I must admit I've never really warmed to her after seeing her on TV. On Question Time I always remember her as indecisive and unable to get her words out or to get a clear relevant point across so as to make an intelligent contribution to the debate. ...a firm favourite. The text on each page is contained in a decorated box adding to the visual pleasure of reading. With 32 pages this book is short and ideal to read at bedtime. Although the Dragons are fierce they are friendly too so shouldn?t be too scary! The book is beautifully illustrated by Victor Lee. The drawings are very delicate with lots of detail. My son?s favourite is the illustration showing children playing with a huge dragon. The dragon?s head fills the page. Although the dragon looks fierce he has a definite smile on his face as he looks at the children playing on his back. There are trees and fields in the background .I love the way the illustrations have captured movement, the grass really seems to blow in the wind for example.
