Fun with feathers!

Advantages: Great fun, good exercise, cheap to buy

...When we were adopted by our handsome cat, Mew, we decided that he should have some toys to play with. It was with this in mind that we went to Pets at Home to see what was on offer there. We came back with a couple of little balls ? hubby said that they would be good as Mew hadn?t got any of his own! Actually even though they had bells inside them Mew wasn?t interested. We got a little sack of cat nip which Mew completely ignored! The real success was the Feather Chaser Wand (yes I know it sounds like some sort of sex toy but trust me on this one!). It is made by a firm called Willow?s and the full name of it is Willow's Feather Chaser Wand Catnip Toy for Cats and it cost just £2.99. It is supposedly infused with cat nip but as I said earlier this wouldn?t make a blind bit of difference to Mew as he doesn?t react to cat nip...

Light as a feather

...the equipment is usually expensive and in skateboarding this is no different, a skateboard can last anything from a month down to one skating session, depending on where the skateboarder is skating and what tricks they are doing, as you can imagine this is a very expensive hobby. My son has often dragged me round skateboard shops every birthday and Christmases, looking at trucks, wheels, boards, grip tape and numerous other shops for the right trainers, clothes, ect for skateboarding and I now consider myself educated on the subject of what?s good and what?s not. ...I have to admitt - lm a Maeve Binchy fanatic - l have read all her books and Echos is my favourite, but lm not hear to tell you about that book, its her latest and apparently her last novel - Scarlet Feather. The 2 main characters Cathy Scarlett and Tom Feather - they attended catering college together and always had the pipe dream to run thier own catering business - suddenly it looks as though this dream may well indeed come true. The story is weaved around the lives of these two central characters and is an enchanting tale. As with all of Binchy's novels it is set in Ireland - this one is based in Dublin. She tells a tale and describes the area so well that its easy to close your eyes and picture exactly what she is describing. BRITISH EMPIRE - THE FOUR FEATHERS

Advantages: Solid remake of a well used storyline.
Disadvantages: Never quite makes the top grade, not emotive enough

...--- Combining a wide range of emotions including love, friendship, trust, heroism, loyalty and romantic rivalry this film tries to cater for all needs, but at times satisfies none (I would though recommend it as a stereotypical his and hers film as it manges to give action and a love plot). Involving a British officer who resigns his commission before going against Sudanese rebels, he is presumed a coward and is given four symbolic white feathers by his friends and fiancee. As a way of dealing with this he goes to Sudan to find his comrades and goes through prison, fights and general pain. In the end he finds most of them and obtains there forgiveness and understanding to why he resigned. Although well made the film constantly leaves you with the false belief that something really good in terms of plot, action and special effects is going to happen...

Advantages: Heartwelming and enjoyable

...This book gives a modern insight to Dublin life, through the eyes of various characters. Cathy and Tom, founders of catering company, Scarlet Feather, and their dysfunctional friends and family members. The perfect read for a rainy day. Heartwelming and enjoyable, i could not put this book down. if you are a fan of Maeve Binchy (author of Cirlce of Friends, amongst others) then you are garuntied to enjoy this book. The main story is about the set up of catering buisness Scarlet Feather', accounting the highs and lows of the buisness. We get to know all of the characters equally well, with some suprising twists, which were welcomed, although unexpected. The mischeivious twins are one of the highlights of the book, creating humour and happiness at some of the darker times. Cathy and Tom, the main characters are realistic...

Feathers and stones may break my bones

Advantages: Vocals, music, lyrics
Disadvantages: Hard to find, not to everyones taste (unlucky them)

...Keeping to the same formula as my past few music reviews this one might as well follow suit, despite it's much more obscure artist (compared with Katie Melua, The Streets and Arctic Monkeys, it's not really anything against Mr Baxter himself). After seeing Tom Baxter on www.myspace.com I actually wrote little blurb for my own private site about the young man: "The unsigned Londoner claims to sound like "Tom Baxter", so at least he's honest, he fails to mention he also sounds a bit like Elbow, with a dreamy sound of an apocolyptic future wearing down on his mind. A guy who has been compared to two artists I'm fans of (comparasions by The Evening Standard to Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake). After his first album, released in 2005 ("Feather and Stone), his follow up, has just recently been released on iTunes, "SKYBOUND". Check it out...

Review of Light as a Feather - Helen Dunne

Guitarred And Feathered

Advantages: A perfect 34 minutes of music, vocally exceptional and highly instrumentally entertaining.
Disadvantages: I fail to think of any.

..., and with this track the vocals of Daryl Palumbo certainly do not disappoint. Just as with the Gerard Way collaboration; the vocal combination provided here is one that works incredibly well and this track is therefore yet another highlight from this 'Gutter Phenomenon' album. Instrumentally and vocally also this is a highly energetic track, the instrumental work is absolutely excellent and vocally also the music always has much to offer. The band bounces through this track with terrific ease and fluency, this is a highly approachable album and with every track the band sounds entirely comfortable and incredibly proficient. Aside from having an absolutely fantastic title, 'Guitarred And Feathered' is another track from this album which is hugely impressive. Just looking at the title makes me smirk, listening to the music however makes me grin from...

Another Remake... But Why?

...Shekar Kapur's 'The Four Feathers' is the sixth film adaptation of AEW Mason's novel about a man given four white feathers of cowardice by his friends and fiancée. Unfortunately Kapur's film, which is full of enormous plot holes and a distracting love triangle, could have achieved much more by departing further from Mason's dated material. It is obvious that Kapur, as an Indian, was hoping to make a commentary on the attitude and actions of the British colonial power. The problem is that the one hundred year old book is fervently pro-empire and Kapur never quite manages to subvert this despite his creation of an additional character. ...The Four Feathers should be a well known story to many people as this version is, I think, the sixth reincarnation of the classic tale. Its an old style boys own adventure romp all about doing the right thing for Queen and country, winning the day and getting the girl. There are many films that fall into the same genre, and this film can be seen as a mix of three equal ingredients. The Bengal Lancers and all of those films of dashing military heroics of Queen Victoria's redcoats constitute the raw ingredient. Add to this one third Lawrence of Arabia for the honour, duty and friendship element. Top this of with a light dressing of Doctor Zivago for the lost love and you have Shekhar Kapur's remake. So with so many previous versions of this tale already trapped in celluloid was there a need to retell this story? One of the problems...
