3. Arran - Gretna

Disc 3

8. The Thames Estuary: Felixstowe - Goodwin Sands
Format and Highlights
Each episode starts with satellite image zooming in on the start point and then of course the opening titles, I must admit that by the time you have heard the theme tune for the forth time it does start to grate a little, stirring as it is.
Neil Oliver our host really gives the impression this is his life's work and puts heart and sole into his enthusiastic presentation, and with every presenter you are given the impression that they are here to entertain and educate.
A lot of painstaking research and planning also goes into each programme as well; each...

Silly Suffolk or not. That's my county
Advantages: Variety of Entertainment
Disadvantages: Some places can be behind the times!
...Suffolk forms part of East Anglia. Along with Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. It contains the most easterly part of the British Isles, Ness Point, Lowestoft.
Suffolk in the past was a rich agricultural area with many small market towns and communities. The only large towns in the county are Ipswich which is the county town and has its own borough council and a population of 117,500 (census 2001), Bury St. Edmunds, with a population of 35,500 (census 2001), and Lowestoft, the most easterly town in the UK, population of 64,300 (census 2001).
In addition there are smaller towns like Saxmundham, Eye, Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth and Hadleigh inland. On the coast there are the towns of Aldeburgh, Felixstowe and Southwold.
The county of Suffolk enjoys its fair share of historical features, making a rich heritage...

10 Questions!
Advantages: Know a little more about me
Disadvantages: It doesnt start with P
...it could be anything, I love presents. Maybe a pet, a greybear, underwear (I love nice underwear) or a photo of someone dear to me. For some reason I love photographs. I have so many photos around my house I haven't got room for many more! Oh I forgot I cup of tea never fails to put a smile on my face!
7) Whats your favourite place in the world?
I don't really know! I think it would have to be felixstowe which is a little sea side not far from where I live, I love going to felixstowe and having fun with my family and friends. I especially love it when its really hot and you get a beautiful breeze from the sea. I love taking my little niece and nephew as they love the beach and there little faces light up. I also love whooping my boyfriend on the arcade driving games!
8) Which one celebrity would you like to share your bed...

England's Oldest Recorded Town
Advantages: Great nightlife, great shops. Great for the young person!
Disadvantages: Bad reputation due to Squaddies, it is false though
...-on-the-Naze/Frinton-on-Sea as well as to haulage town Harwich and Felixstowe.
The Culver shopping centre at teh heart of Colchester is the thriving community of the area. There is always something going on along with the top stores. All the normal brand name shops are there as well as others not so well known.
All in all, Colchester is quickly becoming a thriving nightspot for the young, and a large shopping community for everyone during the day. Great place!...

Monopoly and then some
Advantages: Erm..... they do a good breakfast in first class!
Disadvantages: See below!
...Firstly, I apologise if this review seems more like a rant. I have been sat here for 5 minutes tryinmg to work out the positives with travelling from East Anglia into the rest of the UK, and it's been hard....
Punctuality:
I have to say that the trains run, and well run. Given the intercity routes between Norwich and London are busy, and the slightest hiccup can lead to all sorts of trouble, they do run reasonably well.... That is, until you get to London. It is annoying to see other trains going directly into the station when every time you are on the intercity, you have to wait for five hours! However, given that the intercity line is also shared with the freight from Felixstowe, they do a reasonable job.
However, when there is a fault, it's normally network Rail that have screwed up by letting a local service infront...

Literary Ladies From East Anglia
Advantages: Some Great Novelists
Disadvantages: Not Many
...(1950) and the Towers of Trebizond published in 1956.
King's Lynn has also had literary associations and one of the towns best known literary women was Fanny Burney,.the daughter of Dr. Charles Burney, historian of music. Fanny's greatest literary achievements were Evelina, Cecilia and Carmilla. The latter made her more than 2,000 pounds in royalties,.a near fortune at the time.
Ipswich was the birthplace in 1792 of the novelist Clara Reeve whose best known literary work in The Champion of Virtue: a Gothic Story (1777), renamed The Old English Baron. She spent most of her life at the little village of Kirton near Felixstowe.
A few miles north west of Ipswich is the pleasant spot known as Little Blakenham Maria Charlesworth, writer of inspirational tales, was born at the rectory there, her book Ministering Children, published in 1854...

Gravadlax - A Scandinavian Classic
Advantages: A Delicious Salmon recipe, Perfect for Christmas
Disadvantages: Time-consuming to prepare
....
VELBEKOMME! I live in Suffolk now, quite near to the coast. Sometimes I take my little boy down to the pebbly beach at Old Felixstowe, where he tosses pebbles into the water, and watches the big ships from the Port of Harwich, gliding out across the grey sea towards Esbjerg, just over the way. And somehow, I feel quite certain that my grandfather would approve....

Proposed East Anglian Ciao Meet.
Advantages: We get to meet some great people.
Disadvantages: Hope i live up to expectations lol.
...are thinking of staying over, there is a brand new Travelodge at the Swallow which isn't too far away or if you are feeling a little flusher, Seckford hall is on that side of town. Or the Golf itself has rooms I think. If you are interested in that option I will find out more details for you.
Getting there.
By road
I guess the easiest way in these days of satellite navigation is for me to give you the address and postcode
The Golf Hotel, 748 Foxhall Road, Ipswich, IP4 5TR
I will also sort out a map that I can e mail with the route marked.
I would guess that most people would come up either the A12 or the A14.
A12 head toward Ipswich until you reach the Copdock interchange (toys are us roundabout) Then head toward Felixstowe (third exit on roundabout A14 to Felixstowe) over the Orwell bridge. Your exit is the next one after...

Proposed Ciao Meet near Ipswich? All welcome
Advantages: Putting a face and proper name to some Ciao writers.
Disadvantages: Too far for some to come.
...and Lowestoft. It is also on the A14 going in the east-west direction, roughly from Felixstowe to Cambridge. Ipswich is also on the Liverpool Street line out of London going to Norwich.
Although we have a couple of places in mind we have just ruled one out as it is getting bad reviews! Oh the power of review sites lol. If anyone has a favourite watering hole or knowledge of a pub/restaurant that might make a suitable venue then all proposals will be welcomed. Although some Ciao meets have been held at venues such as theme parks (and Pleasurewood Hills is not too far away!) we have made one decision and that is we are looking for a pub/restaurant type venue. I'm probably showing my age, I don't know what David's excuse is lol.
Nearer the time, if anyone needs help with ideas for places to stay or other places of interest to visit if you...

Glen, what model is my mobile.
Advantages: Vast range of facilities
Disadvantages: Like I am going to find any with this 'phone and how I came by it!!
...on and the boys tastes in music changed, (have you ever heard Slipknot coming out of a mobile!!!) I concealed my hankering for such a ‘racier’ model well hidden!
Last week Glen broke his Nokia. He walked into something and the ‘phone was in his pocket; he smashed the screen. He went out and got a new contract ‘phone (one of these teeniest Samsung A300’s awwww sooo cute!!) and came home and gave me the broken Nokia... never let it be said that my boys aren’t generous!!
To be fair to him though, he knew that I had wanted a Nokia for a long time and he also knew that I knew a man who could fix screens for a reasonable sum!! Last weekend saw me at Felixstowe market handing my newly acquired smashed up mobile to a very nice bloke on the mobile ‘phone stall there only to return less that 20 minutes later and be...
