Fellini's nice place shame about the service

Advantages: nice decor, varied menu
Disadvantages: food not great, service slow and inefficient, parking poor, crowded

...I was taken to Fellini's for a meal on my birthday. It's in such a place that you have to pass by it quite a lot as it is on the corner of the busy junction. It always looked like a nice place but its positioning was a bit off putting. Still, when you are taken out for a meal, you don't complain. The restaurant decor is subtle and nice proportioned. We were immediately greeted at the door and taken to our seats. One thing which surprised me was how close the tables are to each other. We were sat downstairs and you could hear every word of conversations held on tables all around us. The place wasn't that busy (it was about 7pm on a Tuesday) but it made me wonder what it would be like on a busy night. The menu was pretty good with a good selection of delicious sounding foods. The King of Fellini Films

Advantages: autobiographical, symbolic, surreal, heavy, dramatic, italian
Disadvantages: none at all

...I cannot believe no one has reviewed this film yet. What's wrong? This is only the most important film by one of Europe's most influential directors?! The autobiographical, surreal, symbol-ridden 8 1/2 by Federico Fellini is probably one of the most important and weighty entries into Art Film. This film is loosely based on Fellini's own life and fast times in 1950s Rome. Marcello Mastroianni portrays Guido who is desperately trying to get his film finished, but has no idea how to end it. Throughout the film, Fellini uses (and creates) some of cinema history's most amazing images through techniques like flashbacks, slow dissolves and the shadowplay should have won it's own award. Classic description of the "female" Eternal City

Advantages: INTELLIGENT, humorous, sarcastic, depictive, allegoric, surrealistic, insider's view of Rome
Disadvantages: (although it is not a disadvantage for me) very fast scene changes, may miss the plot if not used to Fellini's work

Federico's fabulous food

Advantages: Decent nosh in a nice classic surrounding, cheap, lots of food.
Disadvantages: Cramped tables

...Fellini's is a small cafe open from lunchtime until 7pm daily. It's another one of the eateries based in Carey's Lane in Cork, but has a distinctively 'different' feel to it. It has a classic decor, with grand Edwardian features, combined with contemporary modern furniture and soft muzak that fills the background behind the hubbub of diners. The name Fellini comes from Federico Fellini, an Italian film director (he directed La Dolce Vita amongst others), and posters of his films adorn the walls, along with some rather random 'art' ;-). Fact or Fantasy? Actually it's Fellini

Disadvantages: So you won't understand it

...Fellini was the master. 8 1/2 (made in 1963) was his masterpiece. I watched it once, then twice, and then I tried extensively to work it all out. I couldn't. But in a sense that's fine, because this is Federico Fellini after all. 8 1/2 is so full of imagination that it plays out (unlike any other film since) like a confused dream - no sooner does one chorus of events end, before another takes flight in an altogether different direction. Casablanca - why is this hammy film so addictive?

Advantages: Can be seen over and over again
Disadvantages: Not many

...Don?t get me wrong ? I will watch Casablanca again and again, and thrill to those moments in the film we all know ? but can this film really be one of the best ever made? Just watch the opening, and ask yourself whether it is has quality, or does it resemble an early episode of The Saint? Yes, I know about how the director used certain techniques to draw the attention from and to certain areas, but does he really rank alongside Fellini or Bunuel? That said, I?ll still switch on whenever it?s shown, but why? I think it must rank as one of the top movies that people would vote to see again and again, but the reason evades me. Weird!!...

Great arthouse cinema

Advantages: Very central, fairly priced

...Recently refurbished, the Soho Curzon is an extremely pleasant environment to watch a film in. There is a small cafe upstairs and a bar downsatirs with comfy living room sofas. The walls are "wallpapered" with scripts from films which it is quite good fun guessing which films they are from. The crowd is trendy and intellectual because the films are arty and only appeal to a minority audience. One of the most comfortable arthouse cinemas in London, the seats have plenty of space and the slope of the floor is extreme enough so that you never get anyone's head blocking your view. Sunday is the day for showing old movies in double bills which have a similar theme like the same director. A Fellini double bill was on recently. Fairly priced, tickets at about £7.80....

Advantages: Strong contender for the best movie ever
Disadvantages: Not for those who only like action movies

...8 1/2 was Federico Fellini's 8 1/2th movie (feature films counted as one and short films as 0.5), made in 1962. It stars Marcello Mastroianni as a tortured Italian film director who has been booked into an exclusive resort dedicated to regenerating its clientele. Mastroianni plays a successful director who doesn't know what his next film is going to be about. As such, there are quite a few movies dealing with an artist's creative block - Barton Fink and Adaptation are two examples - but to classify 8 1/2 as an artist's creative block movie is to belittle it in the extreme. It is a joyful, playful, creative dream, poignantly and elegantly displaying Fellini's mastery of cinema with greater breadth than ever before. Dont expect conventional story structure. HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY. NOT.

Advantages: ONLY HALF AN HOUR TO ENDURE.
Disadvantages: MONOTONE AND CHILLING.

...as they are bleak and desperate. Soundtrack to your summer? NO. Soundtrack to a very bad dream, well yes, that, I think, would be fair to say . And if there's just not enough here for you, look out for the CD re-issue, with a couple of bonus tracks thrown in for good measure. From the set of 'Federico Fellinis' 'La Dolce Vita' movie, where she was discovered ( carrying a chandelier), onto the magnificent 'Andy Warhol' driven VU and finally a solo career that careered from a more promising path of approachable, avent garde pop tunes to a dirt road, tread fearfully by the brave few, seduced by Nico and her uncompromisingly individual voice.
