...I am a huge movie fan, and would love to write intellectual and stimulating reviews about my favourite films, but I?m scared I won?t do them justice and tend to avoid these sorts of reviews. So I thought that telling you about my top ten films of 2004 is the first step towards writing a proper film review. Sort of like an initiation or a trial run if you like. Controversially I would just like to say that I thought 2004 wasn?t a great year for films, there were no stand out contenders such as Lord of the Rings. ...First of all, I'd just like to preface this by saying that 2004 was by far the best year for film that I can remember in quite a while. While previous years have brought us several great films, 2004 brought them by the bucketload. While Hollywood was still turning out it's generic rubbish, there was more indie films this year that managed to push themselves into the mainstream, and deservingly so. Hopefully this is a sign that the public is starting to tire of the endless sequels and remakes that seem to make up the majority of the industry these days. I went through a number of ideas before settling on the final design for this. I?m incredibly anal about this kind of list, so was going to limit it to just 2004, but it seemed slightly absurd given the number of 2003 films I didn?t get to see until 2004 thanks to the wonders...

Review of My Personal Top Ten Movies of 2004

The best film of 2004

Advantages: Brilliant cast, tightly plotted, emotional, humour sparingly but effectively used
Disadvantages: Pacing nearly loses its way near the end

.... Not only did it win me over, but it is my vote for top film of 2004 (though it didn't hit Britain's cinemas untill early 2005). One of the reasons for this is that although the film does show the positive aspects of boxing, it doesn't glorify it. You see everything - the glory, the pain, the heartbreak, the feeling of belonging that is all some people have to hold on to. This film takes you on a real rollercoaster of emotion, taking you from the bottom to the top and back again. The scenes of boxing are very well handled and (to me, who knows nothing about it!) looked fairly authentic. The fights however are subsidiary to the plot, and most of them are pretty short. It doesn't pull any punches (sorry, pun not intended!) with its portrayal of the injuries boxers receive either, which I think is a very positive thing about the film (though...

Fame, Net and Catch!

Advantages: Entertaining, well acted, keeps your attention
Disadvantages: Could have been a bit longer

...For my birthday, I decided to eat out at my favourite Mexican restaurant and to go to the cinema to see two films. The first of these films was Wimbledon ? the latest release from Working Title, who can always be relied upon to give you a good film. In fact, many of my favourite films are from Working Title ? My Beautiful Laundrette, Wish You Were Here, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones?s Diary. Wimbledon is another really good film from them. Although you could accuse it of being formulaic and predictable, it?s also entertaining, highly enjoyable and a feel good movie. Hit this one, and I'll sleep with you

Advantages: A typical love story, Excellent back drop using Wimbledon 2003, Some funny moments
Disadvantages: Far too predictabvle, Perhaps the wrong leads, The ending as far too unrealistic

...This week seen me watching a film that ordinarily wouldn?t be my kind of film. The only way I could think to describe it would be chick flick and add to that the fact its about a sport I don?t really watch the question must be why? Well the answer to that question is quite simple. The film stars Kirsten Dunst and that for me was reason enough to subject myself to sitting and watching Wimbledon for an hour and a half. It?s not normally my type of film but I even found myself watching Bring It On due to the presence of Ms Dunst. I didn?t have any expectations for the film, probably a good thing, so sat down to watch it with an open mind. Advantages: Good performances
Disadvantages: A formulaic film with nothing to bring it above the rank and file

...bring it above the rank and file. It employs voice-overs which smack of lazy film-making and lack of imagination on the screenwriters? and director?s part. Some of the voice-overs are amusing (particularly Colt?s running commentary on his matches), but the device is over-used. As are the Sugababes on the soundtrack. But these are minor quibbles that shouldn?t get in the way of enjoying this bright and breezy gossamer light sports film cum romantic comedy. Paul Bettany is one of my favourite British actors of the moment. My dizzy 2004

...After reading so many of others people's reviews on their 2004 I thought I'd give it a bash. Now this year has been very different from previous years as I was off sick for most of it so I apologise now if it isn't a happy read! ***January*** I actually slept my way into 2003 believe it or not! Me and my boyfriend had been shopping on the 31st of December and then we went and saw the Lord Of The Rings (yawn!) By the time we got back to his we were both really tired as we both work nights and our sleep pattern had been messed up. We were going to watch Only Fools And Horses (I think!) but we fell asleep around 9pm. We briefly woke up around 2am, said Happy New Year and went back to sleep!
