When our children were young the Westbury White Horse was a very popular weekend visiting place, you could bundle the kids into the car, pack a picnic, have just enough petrol in the tank to get there and back and still be sure that it was going to be a good afternoon out. As the car reaches the brow of the hill there is grass as far as the eye can see. ...For many years my brother lived in Wiltshire under the shadow of a white horse carved into the limestone hillside above Westbury. I was always fascinated by this figure so when I discovered that there was a similar white horse in North Yorkshire within a day trip of where I live it became a place that I wanted to see. There are many examples of figures of horses cut into the landscape in England but in northern England they are quite rare and the one at Kilburn in North Yorkshire is the most northerly such example in Britain. The practice of carving white horses and occasionally other figures into the landscape dates back to prehistoric times, the reasons behind their creation vary but many have religious origins. The White Horse: A step in the right direction.

Advantages: Scenery, Visual Impact of the Food, Friendly Locals
Disadvantages: Value for Money - perehaps a little expensive, awkward to find.

...The White Horse of Woolley Moor is set upon a beautiful backdrop, the hills around rolling for miles and the roads twisting and turning. These roads will take your tastebuds on a journey towards some of the finest 'pub food' that I believe Derbyshire has to offer. Many reviews exist of the White Horse, terms such as "par", "average", "cluttered" and "quantity rather than quality" seem to dominate them. ...Sorry about the title - ultra-cheesey, I know. Anyway, within the last year, The White Horse has been transformed from a dank, old-man's pub into an airy, bright cafe-style pub, which really works very well. Unlike most Dublin pubs, there's plenty of seating available, the beer is always good, and the service is invariably professioanl and courteous. Again, unlike most Dublin pubs, the music doesn't blare out so that you can't hear yourself think. Prices are average and the location is nice and central - just 100 yards down from O'Connell Bridge....

Advantages: Some tracks of a newer style for Nickelback
Disadvantages: one or two weaker tracks (but what album doesn't?!)

...save Curb, and I admit that there is a definite similarity across the albums, but I find it more to be a basic formula that works, then several of the tracks on each album are either adaptations of this formula, or begin to stray from it. This is true of Dark Horse, but on Dark Horse Nickelback seem to be trying out a slightly more ballad-y style. They have stuck with their typical rock formula for S.E.X. Next Go Round is of the same ilk. Shakin' Hands is quite typical in that it has very amusing but also close to the bone lyrics ? this song is about gold digging and has my favourite line 'she's done everyone once and everyone knows, gotta get a little dirty when you're digging for gold'; it's written in a very satirical manner and I see it more as a mickey-take of rap songs than as a 'dirty' rock song. The walks are gentle and scenic with plenty along the way to keep children amused and interested. Little Miss especially enjoyed the crystal horse trail which really made her want to find the crystal horse. It was quite eerie walking through the Quarry gardens and hearing the horses hooves galloping along behind us but once used to it, it was ok! The hall itself was, I think, shown to best advantage without furnishings because we really got a feel for the size of the rooms, and it was interesting to be able to actually touch things...

Advantages: Fascinating addition to landscape. Interesting stories/fables behind their making. Reminder of special historical events.

They?re also known as chalk carvings due to the fact that they?ve been cut into the hillside turf to expose the underlying chalk rock beneath. Of these 57 odd hill figures, Wiltshire seems to boast more hill figures than any other county in England, the most prolific of which being the white horse figures. My father often had sales calls to make in Wiltshire when I was a child, and I?d often go along for the ride just for the scenery.
