...I am sure we all know that smoke alarms for the home are a great idea but unless you live in a new home and have one wired in then you need to remember to replace the batteries regularly. My smoke alarms are now quite elderly (20 years+) so I started looking at the options. I discovered that there are more than just one type of smoke alarm. There are two basic systems according to the Fire Service: ?Ionisation: These are the cheapest and cost very little to purchase. They are very sensitive to small particles of smoke produced by flaming fires, such as chip pans, and will detect this type of fire before the smoke gets too thick. The smoke alarm uses an extremely small amount of radioactive element in the ionisation chamber. The piece of mind alarm

Advantages: Easy to use.
Disadvantages: Watch out for the box settings

...We purchased our Wicks wire free alarm when we moved into our new house three years ago, having been burgaled two years previously at our former address i needed something to give me piece of mind having two young children in the house (i became a bit of a basket case for a while after, and have developed ocd since!!) The alarm came with a keypad that has to be near a plug socket and plugged in at all times, although there is a solar battery in the outside box in case of power cuts. You also get as part of the basic package two room sensors that if placed in the correct part of the room ie, the corner, scans 180 degrees round the room to detect movement. Alarming thought

Disadvantages: goes off for no apparent reason

...It's an alarming thought that someone dies every day due to the fact they never had a smoke alarm fitted. Another reason for this is the removal of the devices' battery, or indeed a flat battery. It is to this end that our local council comes round a check on a regular basis. If you do have a smoke alarm fitted and it tends to beep now and then, this could be an indication the battery needs replaced. Most fires start at night and if you do not have an alarm fitted your chances of survival are virtually Zero. Fire is not the main killer in accidents like this. If you have no alarm and are asleep, it's the smoke that's going to get you first. Not a nice way to go, but you can give yourself a fighting chance if you BUY A SMOKE ALARM. We have two smoke alarms in our house, and there are many occasions when I felt like breaking them...

Playing with Fire

Advantages: still a big fan of this series after reading this, I love the characters
Disadvantages: It takes forever to get into and was too drawn out at the beginning. Not as good as the first!

Smoke alarm and pendant light in one - fantastic

Advantages: Barely noticeable looks, no batteries to change, illuminates lights to help escape
Disadvantages: May suddenly turn the bedroom light on at 2am if there's a power cut

...light on. And it cannot be switched off until power is restored! If you have multiple Housesafe alarms, they can all be linked together so that if one is activated, they all sound the alarm. Good if for example a fire starts in the living room and sets off the living room alarm, it will then automatically set off the upstairs alarms too so that anyone sleeping upstairs is alerted of a fire at an early stage to enable them to escape. The booklet doesn't give a decibel rating for the alarm but it does have an adjustable volume and it is loud enough to wake me up straight away, when the volume is at it's middle setting. What the booklet does say though is that for maximum protection a smoke alarm should be installed in every room in the house, except for bathrooms and kitchens. Silent Alarm

Advantages: The true revival of Joy Division-esque music
Disadvantages: Tracks are somewhat too similar at times

...Bloc Party's debut album, 'Silent Alarm' arrived in mid Feb 2005 to critical acclaim as the possible answer for the next Joy Division, and it's clear to see why. The first thing you can note is the 'indie' feel, and the drum beats that are reminiscent of Joy Division at their brief yet best time. The guitars seemed to have picked up their own unique sound as well, and Kele Okereke's vocals are strong, and something Damon Albarn-like about them. The opening track 'Like Eating Glass' is an excellent starting point, and could quite easily be a single at some point. The musical elements here are an excellent indication of what is to follow throughout the album. 'Helicopter' is one of the albums highlights, and proof of some of the catchy and exciting guitar riffs on the album. Released as a single, it is certainly a song that will...

In actual fact this is a stand alone novel and does not use characters from Spindler?s other novels although, like her other novels, it is set in the New Orleans area. Disappointingly the setting is neither here nor there as it has no particular relevance to the story, nor does it successfully capture the essence of that fine southern city in spite of occasional reference to the grand houses associated with New Orleans area. After a couple of chapters I realised that ?Cause for Alarm? didn?t feature the characters I?d met in the other Spindler novel I?d read and so I turned to the back cover blurb. Curiously...

Raise The Alarm!!!

Advantages: A new very strong sound, with much variation throughout the album
Disadvantages: Maybe not to everyones taste, but definitely a good future for the band

...for the duration of the song, which has a constant steady pace. "I Ain't Losing Any Sleep" starts at a slow pace and slowly picks up a bit more speed, giving a strong chorus, and a steady speed throughout. "My Army" picks up the pace a bit more after the previous track. Not the best on the album but still pretty good. "Raise The Alarm" is the last listed track on the album and is another with a great beat and bass-line. It ends with quite a full sound, picking up speed towards the very end, with a lot of experimental noises and a good ending. But wait, there's a hidden track. The extra track on the end of "Raise The Alarm", starts with a beat similar to "Bloc Party's- Banquet" and continues with a strong bass and guitar. Strong vocals, just gives the album a more dramatic exit, a bit of an encore. This is a great album with a new sound...
