...I needed protection on my computer against the constant attempts to infiltrate it by hackers every time i was on the Internet. My solution came by way of an advert I saw on my ISP's website for ZONEALARM. The software is free for private users and downloadable directly from zonealarm.com web site. Download time was minimal, 5 or 6 minutes and installation a doddle. I now run this program every time I am on-line and it works. You get alerted everytime someone tries to access your PC. Any of your applications that require internet access such as webferret, Real player etc will not be allowed to do so until you authorise them. Compatibility with other programs: I have not experienced any problems with other programs while running ZONEALARM but I always unload it if I am not using the internet. ■ Fumbling Through the Firewall ■

Advantages: Ford scrubs up nicely in a suit.
Disadvantages: Predictable bank robbery thriller.

...After a busy day on my feet, traipsing around a shopping centre all I wanted was a nice film to watch in the evening with my glass of Baileys. Somehow I ended up watching Firewall. Advantages: Familiar storylines, some okay suspense and acting (Paul Bettany)

Best windows software firewall by far

Advantages: Strong inbound and outbound protection, web content filtering, very easy to use

Many of the modern software firewalls provide excellent inbound protection (i.e. they pass the grc.com and pcflank.com tests), but far too few will actually protect you against key-loggers (stealing your credit card details as you type them) and their like that are becoming more prevalent on the net. People that do a lot of downloading of programs, especially via file sharing networks, or who open some phishing scam emails, should worry about this. Many people believe that their firewall will protect them because it only allows 'trusted' apps to access the net. Unfortunately, there are numerous ways to bypass this simple security, and there are at least 15 'leaktests' which demonstrate how this can happen. For example. Once loaded, I open internet explorer, then it asks do i wish to allow I.E. to access the internet? I can select yes or no. There are also other options, such as allow server, which is needed for most chat programs, like ICQ, or MSN messenger. So you can use this firewall and chat programs at the same time. There is also a lock option, so you can refuse any activity except those that you have authorised, and I recommend only allowing a few applications. Then should you not be using your internet connection for a while, it will automatically engage the lock mode, so that nothing can access the internet/or gain entry into your computer...

It was quick and easy to download and install and runs quite happily alongside other applications on both Windows 98 and Windows ME. Operation couldn't be simpler, just launch it and it gets straigyht to work notifying you of any activity by programs trying to access your system. Some programs legitimately access your system for cookies and such like and safe sites or programs can be authorised for access, the whole program is configurable. ...never should have happened. They justify this assertion with the statement that we should not allow e-mail with attachments (it was the attachment which carried the virus) onto our sites. In my humble opinion this is pure horseshit. I am buggered if I am going to let some twat of a hacker dictate to me whether or not I can send and receive attachments in my e-mail, an otherwise very useful capability. In my view the answer is not to ban attachments, as a lot of large corporates have done, but to use better virus checking software that will vet the attachments on the way in.
