firewire cable
Advantages: transfer speed over usb
Disadvantages: u have to make sure u have the right pin combinations
...firewire has now long be established as the industry standard for video transfer from dv camcorders to pc. the main benefits of this being the ability to edit the videos you have taken, and then to store them onto a dvd, that will be kept safe forever.
gone are the days where you had to archive your holiday videos on large space hungary video cassette, the digital revolution is here, and not only does a cd take up half the space as a tape, it stores a lot my video ! a typical video casette can take 3 hours of footage, with the new 8.5 gb dvd now avaible ( at a gb an hour rate) thats over 8 hours of high quality footage, fantastic.
the ease with which videos can be edited is fantastic, take any video editing software, adobe pro is the best i feel, and you can add music, effects, transitions between parts, and really create a very...

A motherboard with firewire
Advantages: Ideal for those with digital cameras of video editing
Disadvantages: aimed more towards specialists
...his Gigabyte board is a Flip Chip Pin Grid Array board, using the VIA 594x Apollo Pro Family AGPset chipset, in an ATX format with FireWire support (hence the '1394') in the product name.
This latter feature, in particular, is unusual. Where many manufacturers might be tempted to add sound, modem, NIC or even SCSI support, Gigabyte is the first we've seen to add FireWire to this form factor, courtesy of a TI chipset. Also known as IEEE1394 (in deference to Apple) and i.LINK by Sony, this FireWire interface could be described as 'USB, but faster'. Watch for future features on this site where we explain all about FireWire.
Back to the board. This unit has five PCI slots, one of which is shared with an ISA slot, along with the obligatory AGP port and an AMR riser slot. Three DIMMs are onboard, each capable of handling PC-133 memory...

Pro quality home recording at home on a budget
Advantages: Good value and flexible mixer, works well with PC. Cubase is a nice bonus.
Disadvantages: Knobs not sliders, no MP3 encoder with Cubase but these are minor details
.... This meant there was no way to record a band together live or even just drums on their own which require at least 3 or 4 separate mics. It's important that each instrument and vocal is recorded separately so that you can balance their relative volume levels after recording.
FIREWIRE RULES OK!
Having looked around the best solution for being able to record several tracks at the same time directly to the PC looked like the Alesis Firewire range. Firewire (or IEEE 1394 to give it it's technical name) is another way of connecting devices to a PC similar to USB but offering better data transfer performance. Most modern PCs now come with a firewire connection as standard but, if you have an older PC that doesn't, you can always get a firewire PCI expansion card for under £10. You may notice that the mixer has two firewire connections but...

Good audio interface for serious recording
Advantages: good sound quality, zero latency
Disadvantages: if you expect a really out standing quality, this is not the one to go for
...I bought this M-Audio firewire last year. Have to say Im really satisfy with this audio interface. It has 2 input with 48V phatom power, from which you can plug in your condenser microphones. There are also 2 1/4 input for instruments. It works really well for my acoustic, although I would prefer to use the condenser mics to record, since they give a fuller tone.
Supported with firewire connection, there is no latency, and it allows you to record up to 192Kb, which is satisfactiory for professional recording.
The interface has a solid look, with white silver color and very stable. I've been using it for 1 year and I've never had a problem with the hardware. The software is well suported and run smoothly with my mac....

A lot of Inputs and Outputs for Little Outlay
Advantages: 16 channels of good quality IO for not much money
Disadvantages: Unbalanced analogue inputs/Need an ADAT interface to access full 16 channels
...The M-Audio Firewire 1814 manages to pack a lot of inputs and outputs into a relatively inexpensivepiece of gear. If you need lots of inputs and outputs and you're on a budget this could be the audio interface for you.
There are 8 analogue inputs, 2 of which have preamps and joint XLR/TS inputs on the front panel. I found the pre-amps highly usable given the price of the unit. The other analogue inputs are unbalanced TS inputs at line level, which can be a problem with ground loop noise particularly if you are going to use this with a laptop.
The other 8 inputs and outputs are via optical cable and ADAT. I had no problem connecting a Behringer ADA 800 to give me the full 16 inputs and it all synced very well. For the money you'll be hard pressed to find something that gives you as much IO. If you can afford to stretch the budget...

This is good
Advantages: Speed, hotpluggable, price
Disadvantages: Noise of fan
...I bought this product about a year ago. It is the 20GB version which can be purchased for around £199.
I run it from a Power Mac G4 through Firewire. But you can run it from any computer that has firewire.
It is a great drive. I think it looks good.
Useability is excellent, for the mac all you have to do is install the firewire drivers and bingo it works. It is hot pluggable which means you don't have to restart your computer to mount it. You just turn it on and it appears on your desktop. When you have finished you unmoount it and turn it off.
Performance wise it is good, much faster than USB it can transfer about 20mb per sec providing your computer can keep up. Though you have to remember that this is not true firewire. It is a normal EIDE hardisk with a firewire bridge.
Compared to all the other Firewire drives out...

Lacie's hot HDD
Advantages: great design, high capacity, fast
Disadvantages: mains powered
...18.8 cm x 3.5 cm
Weight 900grammes
Capacity 250 GB
Interface Type IEEE 1394 (FireWire)
Connector 6 PIN FireWire
Data Transfer Rate 400 Mbps
Average Seek Time 10 ms
Spindle Speed 7200 rpm
Buffer Size 8 MB
OS Required Apple MacOS 9.1, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition / Windows ME, Microsoft Windows 2000 / XP, Apple MacOS X 10.2.1 or later
If all this is too much for you then lets just say that this is a fast drive with lots of room for your pics music and videos. It supports a fast rate of data transfer (It is firewire) of about 25 MBytes/sec (0r 400mbits/sec) which it usual does.
The know -
Well one of the down falls with any 3.5" form hard disk running at 7200rpm is that it cannot get the required power to run it via the data bus (firewire cable). This means that it requires a 'Brick' transformer to poer it so u cant...

Porsche Performance?
Advantages: Good Looking, Robust
Disadvantages: Scratch Easily, Heavy
...these can be deceptive, we'll take a look at the rear of the unit, the connection panel. It features a power switch, a power socket, two FireWire 400 ports, and a USB 2.0 port, nothing complicated, just the tools for the job. The second FireWire port is for daisy-chaining devices. This is super-handy, as many PCs and Macs have only 1 FireWire 400 port. Hook up the hard disk to the computer and plug your next FireWire device into the free port on the hard disk. Easy peasy!
From many years of experience using PCs running Windows, and my last year becoming intimate with Mac OSX, I honestly don't have a favourite. It's difficult to choose as Windows does some things far better than OSX can, and OSX makes some tasks wonderfully easy where windows struggles. OSX makes using external drives a doddle. This drive was pre-formatted for OSX, so i...

Don't Bother
Advantages: secure, robust, fairly fast
Disadvantages: poor customer service
...Wow I thought after years of using a 100MB parallel port drive I thought I would take the plunge and up grade to the 750MB firewire port, after all it was only being used for video editing. Best price found was on Amazon so after consultation with them (Iomega) about the free mains adaptor I ordered the drive.
Big mistake!
After searching the web for a good deal on 750 media discs I noticed that Iomega were doing it for £30 Inc del. No problem I thought, so paid by credit card and noticed that it could only be sent to address on card which is fine if you are a business or at home all day. Anyhow the inevitable happened and a few days latter arrived home to find non del card on mat. Courier DHL were of no help even giving me wrong info regarding times of opening and worse still not knowing number of other depot after I volunteered to...

Solid
Advantages: Size, Looks
Disadvantages: Only Firewire, cable supplied.
...I bought this last christmas to be used as an extention to my laptop's hard drive. At the time i think it cost me £130 but now is available for around £70. I really like the look of this hard drive, it feels solid and is easily stackable. An advantage to it being firwire means it can be daisy-chained, allowing more than one hard drive to be connected to a single computer via a single firewire port. A disadvantage which revealed an advantage of LaCie came when it is only supplied with a "large" to "large" firewire cable. My laptop has a "small" firewire socket and so i wasn't able to use it at first. Buying a seperate cable to allow connection it still didn't work, so i contacted the manufacturor and they were very helpful and suggested i sent it back to them. A week or so later it arrived back to me with a letter saying they had found...
