The best NEW band out there! Fleet Foxes

Advantages: Original baroque style folk/rock, groundbreaking album
Disadvantages: Originality can challenge some people's mainstream tastes

...Now I don't often write music reviews, however having recently bought the Fleet Foxes album, I am compelled to rave about them. Now this band are like no other in todays music, however I guess there comparisons can be made with an earlier more ecletic mix of crosby stills and nash mixed with fleetwood mac, add a smuttering of Brian Wilson from the beach boys and Bob Dylan and your kinda getting close. Their routes are definietly in folk music, with what I like to call "Peasant Rock"......weired I know, but its really hard to pigeon hole them and essentially this is why I like them so much. Originality in todays music is the holy grail and much like one of my other favourite bands Sigur Ros, Fleet Foxes stand alone with a unique blend of folky pop/rock. THE BAND Robin Pecknold Skyler Skejelset Nicholas Peterson Casey...

Georgian Market Town in Hampshire

Advantages: Pretty Market Town
Disadvantages: House prices!

...----Introduction------- Alresford is a pretty Georgian market town in Hampshire, England that lies about 7 miles East of the cathedral city of Winchester. The town centre is full of pretty colour washed Georgian houses. The population is around 5000 (2001 census) Alresford (pronounced Allsford) apparently means 'the ford over the river where the alder trees grow'. There is an Old and New Alresford. (Although New Alresford came into existence around 1200 so is not that new!). For this review when I mention Alresford I will be referring to New Alresford. Alresford came top of the SE regional list in Country Life Magazine's "Favourite Market Town" award and was a runner up to Hexham, the winners, in the final five! ---Brief History-------- Henri de Blois, brother of King Stephen and Bishop of Winchester, is credited...

Hampshire's Trip Down Memory Lane

Advantages: Easy to get to, not rushed once inside, ample parking, reasonable prices.
Disadvantages: Not enough to do to spend the whole day there.

...Milestones Living History Museum Come and discover your past inside a make believe town that never rains or has traffic congestion. Milestones was built to house over 21,000 objects either made or used in Hampshire and dating back to as far as the Victorian era. Milestones is managed by Hampshire County Council and also Basingstoke and Deane . On approach to the museum, the building looks more like an aircraft hanger. You wouldn?t think that this ultra modern steel and glass building would house so many old and ancient artefacts. Milestones has been in Basingstoke since November 2000 and was opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. ******Directions:****** By car - Milestones is only 3 miles from the M3 on the Basingstoke Leisure Park site and is clearly sign posted on approach. There is ample parking and it?s free...

Hurry up, the Fleets in....

Advantages: Great food, there's a brewery underneath.
Disadvantages: No real "taste" of the "real" Liverpool.

...We visited The Baltic Fleet last autumn, when we were in Liverpool for the day. We found it by accident ~ we were looking for somewhere to eat on a busy Sunday and were at The Albert Dock. There were surprisingly few pubs around and what eateries there were looked extremely crowded. This was our first visit to Liverpool so we didn't know our way around ~ so we set off away from the Albert Dock where we could see what looked like a pub; they were bound to be serving Sunday lunches! The street we were on turned out to be Wapping and the pub turned out to be The Baltic Fleet ~ and, oh, it WAS serving lunches; thank goodness 'cos by now we were starving! ~~~How to get there. The pub can be found not far away from the Albert Dock at 33a The Wapping, Liverpool. I'm no good at directions so there is a map at http...

Jack Sparrow does Fleet Street

Advantages: Great cast, director and musical director
Disadvantages: Awkward performance as a musical.

...Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is essentially a remake of George King's 1936 classic, where the malicious Sweeney Todd murders people for their money. This 2007 version takes Stephen Sondheim's stage production of the tale into the cinema, with the pairing of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp as Director and Lead Actor once again rearing its sublime head. It is important to note from the outset that there are scenes of a gory nature and that the film is by nature a 'musical.' The plot Depp plays Benjamin Barker, a doting husband to Lucy and father to Johanna making his living as a barber. He is accused of a crime he did not commit and banished from London by a judge (played by Alan Rickman) who wishes to covet Barker's wife, Lucy. 15 years later, Barker returns to London under the guise of Sweeney Todd, to find his...

Weekend break at the Hampshire

Advantages: Complete luxury in the most central London location
Disadvantages: £600+ final bill

...I recently stayed at the Hampshire for 2 nights during a theatre trip with my partner. As a treat I booked a junior suite (through radissonedwardian.com). At a nightly rate of £261 (ex. VAT) it was not cheap, but we were rewarded with a wonderful room right at the heart of Leicester Square with a very comfy king size bed, leather sofa, mini bar, marble bathroom with seperate toilet cubicle, shower, bath, and double wash basins. It was spacious, spotless, and with a great view of the Square (from the 4th floor). Hotel staff were friendly and courteous, and service prompt, professional, unfussy, and discreet. Our bags were carried to the room without hesitation. We took breakfast in the room and even though we were told to allow a half hour 'window', it still arrived exactly at the stated time. There was far to much food though. I...

The Hampshire Hotel

Advantages: Lobby
Disadvantages: Small room, overpriced, rude staff, billing errors

...THE HAMPSHIRE HOTEL – 47th STREET –NYC Amidst the hustle and bustle of 47th street you will find the glass doors of THE HAMPSHIRE HOTEL. Pull them open, step inside and you will go, “AH”! A breathtaking chandelier, marble galore and a plush seating area will catch your fancy. Walk to the front desk to check-in and all the ambiance and magic of the grand entrance will be tarnished. A rude employee will tell you to just take a seat and wait. As you wait, (tired from your travels and anxious to freshen-up) for 10, 15, 20 minutes you will become increasing agitated. Periodic trips to the front desk will be to no avail. Again and again you will hear --- “just sit and wait”. Finally, when your turn arrives, as if at a deli counter with a number, you will receive no assistance. Carry your luggage...

Fantastic place to go if the weather is bad (Fleet Air Arm)

Advantages: Takes a whole day to see, very educational
Disadvantages: None

...My partner recently had a week off work and the weather was terrible so after spending 3 days staying at home getting very bored I decided to search the internet for somewhere to visit that was suitable for when it was raining. I cam across the Fleet Air Arm Museum website, I had herd a lot about this place before but had never been, so we jumped in our car and off we went. On our arrival we parked up in the free car park and headed to the entrance (I just happened to notice a few young men in uniform guarding the airbase lol), you head up a flight of stairs to get in and as soon as you step in the door you are surrounded by pictures of the displays etc and you get the feeling straight away that is going to be a good day. Entrance prices are £11 per adult & £8 per child or two adults and three children for £35, I didn't think...

New Hampshire is so similar to England.

Advantages: Seeing family, and sharing quality time.
Disadvantages: Can be very cold in the winter months.

...We fly to Manchester, New Hampshire most years. Len has his daughter, son-in-law and family living there. It has been great the last 3 trips. Two in June for graduation. Perfect weather for me, a Floridian with an English accent, who just loves hot weather, and the last one in July of this year for Len's grand-daughter's wedding.. However, we did fly up one March to drive a vehicle back to Florida. We stayed overnight and it was freezing. Len's daughter even got me to take a ride in her open top porsche. I had a thick ski jacket, scarf, leather gloves etc. and the heating on full blast. If you like winter sports, then this could be a great time for you. I know Len's daughter was always clearning the snow away. Where the water lay at the bottom of their garden, they had their own ice skating rink. The countryside. It...

North Conway New Hampshire

Advantages: beautiful scenery
Disadvantages: sometimes gets very busy

...Live free or die’ says the motto on every car plate from New Hampshire, and no-where is this more true than in the town of North Conway. The people are friendly, patriotic and extremely proud of their beautiful surroundings. North Conway is the ideal place to visit if you are interested in sports – in the winter it is an excellent skiing area and in the summer months is full of hikers and campers. The town is on the edge of the White Mountains and most visitors (ourselves included) take a trip to Mount Washington, which is the tallest in the Presidential range. The summit can be reached by foot, by cog railway, or by car via a toll road (very pretty but a bit scary in places). Be warned though, no matter what weather you have left behind in North Conway it will be VERY cold on the mountain. Although the actual...
