...The Plot Flora's Lot is the story of Flora Stanza a young single Londoner who inherits part of an auction house after the death of her uncle. Having no real ties in London she decides to pack up and move to the country to find out a little more about the business she has inherited. Problem is that all Flora knows about the antique business is what she's picked up on programmes like the Antiques Roadshow. Floras' meddling in the business does not go down well with the co-owner, Floras cousin Charles and his fiancée Annabelle. They want to buy her out and send her back to London but Flora isn't prepared to give in that easily. Flora and her cat who is about to have kittens moves into a neglected holiday cottage owned by Annabelle which is in the middle of nowhere. Flora Extra Light - Its Not Real Butter!

Advantages: low fat
Disadvantages: not as nice as butter

...Flora Extra Light Spread.......... This low fat margarine has got to be the slimmers choice of butter substitute. This is because it is so low in fat and calories that I do believe it is the lowest fat spread on the market! I have been using this spread (when there is nothing else on special offer) for quite some time now due to the fact that they seem to have discontinue St Ivel Gold which is something I have used for many years. To be honest however I can't say I see that much difference when using this spread, The Flora Extra Light as with all the Flora margarine comes within a oblong type container with a lid that is easily popped on and off. The colour of the margarine is a little paler than that of Flora Butterly but it does still have a slightly golden tinge to it. There is not really much of a smell that comes off...

It's Flora-tastic

...OK, before I start let me tell you I'm a butter girl - a Lurpak girl to be completely honest with you. I'm so much of a Lurpak girl that I've got a Douglas (the butter man with the trombone) mousemat, socks, tea-towel, butter dish and toast rack. So why am I doing a Flora op? Simple, we've recently moved into a house with NO central heating (**shiver**) and butter quite simply goes too hard and won't spread cos the kitchens so cold. I tried to stick with Lurpack, microwaving it to sofen it (result: butter goes horrible and gooey after the 10th time in the microwave) and I even started putting the butter dish on top of the grill to soften it until I forgot it was there one day and melted butter got inside the grill and nearly burned my house down! Butter me up, Flora.

Advantages: Relatively inexpensive and tasty.
Disadvantages: Not quite as good as butter.

...I want to make a confession to all you fellow Ciaoers - I love fresh butter on my toast and baked potatoes. It is absolutely delicious but unfortunately does not help the healthy eating regime as it has an astronomical fat content and is full of saturates. So, when I decided it was time for a change the hunt was on to find a decent substitute with a similar taste. Not easy but once my mind is made up I am a determined little madam. After trying several, including Tesco's own brand (yuck) I came across Flora Light - Vegetable Low Fat Spread. It is available in 3 sizes - 250g, 500g and 1kg which will set you back 57p, 84p and £1.57 respectively. So, the price was very attractive. I am not on a diet or any kind of health kick and my initial purchase was just by chance, and yet I have found myself making a repeat purchase. I had run out of Margarine a few weeks ago so I nipped down to my local convenience store only to find that the choice of spreads available consisted of either Flora Light or their own label Happyshopper budget stuff. THE PRODUCT Flora Margarine is sold in a white plastic tub and it is available in three different sizes. These are a 250g tub, 500g and 1kg tub which will cost you 55p, 90p or £1.73 respectively from the Asda, although buying mine from a local shop I paid over the odds, parting with a whopping 71p for a 250g tub. ...I used to buy real butter but in a bid to eat healthier, I decided last year to switch to a "spread" and have, since then, been searching in vain for one that has a half decent buttery taste. And at last I have found it! I have tried endless spreads and margarines and really didn't like the false, almost "plasticy" taste that most of them had. I can honestly say that I do not find the taste of flora buttery spread to be anything other than delicious and satisfying. (particularly on hot crumpets or toast) :-D. A 500g pack of flora buttery was on offer recently at one of my local shops at the bargain price of 60p!! I have since been back to purchase more as this is almost half price compared to what it usually costs! ...In a world of uncertainly, of fears and of stresses, thank goodness for one thing that can keep us all free from harm, like garlic or a crucifix can save us from the vampire in the night. Like a silver bullet is your defence from an attack by a werewolf. I am talking, of course, about Flora. All right, it can’t actually keep us free from harm, not from say a burglar or a street mugger, or the tax man (and any other Beatles song), but it is good for your heart anyway. It is high in polly whatits, you see. Seriously, it is low in saturates and high in polyunsaturates, it is rich in vitamins and… shucks, it is sooooo darn healthy I think I will not eat anything else. ...Having grown up around Flora Light and living a sheltered existence I never really understood what butter was. Whenever I was given a sandwich it had Flora spread in it. Baked potatoes with cheese always had a dollop of Flora light to add to the flavour. And this is how it was for me. When I got in to my mid teens I discovered butter. It was by accident and I was at a friends house making myself a sandwich. I looked in his fridge for Flora Light and was unable to find any. I knew there was other brands out there as I had seen adverts on the TV for Vitalite and over types of spread so I took out the butter.
