Silver-screen sports stories rarely revolve around the big and brawny, but the small and scrappy, like Sean Astin in Rudy or Toby Maguire in Seabiscuit. For Scottish cycling sensation Graeme Obree (Trainspotting's Jonny Lee Miller), the biggest obstacle isn't physical, but financial--and psychological. From 1993 to 1995, when most of The Flying Scotsman takes place, he's a bike-shop owner and courier who dreams of turning pro (Laura Fraser plays his supportive spouse). After Rev. Baxter (Brian Cox returning to his native Scotland) sets him up with supplies, and fellow courier Malky (The Lord of the Rings' Billy Boyd) agrees to manage him, Obree sets out to break the one-hour world record. He starts by building a bicycle from spare parts, a move that recalls Anthony Hopkins' eccentric racer in The World's Fastest Indian. Obree's money woes are further complicated by a battle with manic depression, which is handled sensitively, if superficially, i.e. it isn't made clear whether he ever receives treatment. Though he'll break several records before the film is over, the World Cycling Federation (represented by former James Bond villain Steven Berkoff) makes him jump through several demeaning hoops to get there. As for Miller, he's convincing as a cyclist (Obree serves as one of his stand-ins), though Boyd provides the bulk of the charisma. Nonetheless, the real-life champ deserves recognition for his achievements, and Mackinnon's movie is as a sympathetic testament to a true talent. --Kathleen C. Fennessy ... less

Filmed on location in Cumbria 1987/1989. Section 1: Carlisle - Workington After departing Carlisle we pass another 108 on the down. A coal train stands in Maryport Open Cast as we pass and then call at Flimby. At Workington we let the first unit continue after the driver has cleaned the windscreen. Section 2: Workington - Whitehaven Joining the next southbound service we see Class 20s on a weed killing train and a Class 155 unit in the yard. After calling at Harrington we travel over the single line on the sea wall to Parton. After a signal check we enter Whitehaven bay platform. We see our unit return on a Carlisle service and then the next down service arrives and departs. Section 3: Whitehaven - Barrow-in-Furness Joining the driver in the cab we enter Whitehaven tunnel and head towards the light of Corkickle and Braystones. After Sellafield we see the green 108 on a down service as well as 4472 Flying Scotsman in the yard. From Drigg to Bootle we travel over the down line due to relaying on the up. Back on the up line, and back in the cab, we stop at more stations before finally arriving at Barrow-in-Furness. There are nine sections in this film starting with LNWR 790 "Hardwicke''. This remarkable veteran stretched her legs for a short time in the 1970s. Colin White followed her. On one trip to York double-heading with Flying Scotsman he was even in 4472's cab for part of the journey, offering an almost unique filming opportunity. Other scenes see her in action in the Lake District. Heaton Mersey, coded 9F, with a study of Stanier's 8Fs coming and going on this shed in its last months of operation where manual work on the coal stage was the order of the day. The fascinating crane tanks at Doxford's ship yards near Sunderland offer us another form of locomotive. Filmed in 1970 they work hard around the yard before returning to the shed for a lunch break which used to lead to complaints from road users of smoke nuisance.. and what smoke! This is followed by more unusual locomotives in the guise of narrow gauge articulated types. Fairlies on the Ffestinog are followed by Saxon-Meyers in East Germany with transporter wagons and the amazing Herberlein brake; engines sporting a steam operated bell. The Mallett articulated engine is next studied again in Germany where 0-4-4-0 tanks work hard in the snow. Finally to Portugal for some 2-4-6-0 Mallett tanks around Regua and the smaller 0-4-4-0 types at Porto. An A4 meets an unrebuilt Bullied in 1967 when 4498 visited the Southern, ah! the charm of the chime. Returning to the continent for a few minutes to sample super power with a potted look at 2-10-0 types in Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia. Double headers in the snow and a train with 3 2-10-0s as motive power. Even if your loyalties lie with the Big Four you cannot but help marvel at the power of some of these continental giants and in some superb locations. Back to our shores 6115 'Scots Guardsman' had two main line outings in 1978 from Dinting to York. Both occasions were captured before she disappeared from the scene to hopefully re-emerge in the 2000's. ... less

Great Steam Locomotives - Somerset & Dorset & 7Fs Dvd. Most people think of the famous Express Steam Locomotives, such as ' Flying Scotsman', 'Princess Elizabeth', 'Mallard' and so on when asked to describe a steam engine. However, the true backbone of the steam railwy age was the conveyance of goods traffic, for which special locomotives were required - known as freight engines. Perhaps most special of all were the Somerset and Dorset Class 7F 2-8-0s, the subject of this dvd. Their working lives were spent entirely on the famous Somerset and Dorset Railway and such was their charisma, that two examples, 53808 and 53809, have been saved for posterity. This dvd shows the class at work in the 1960s by means of Ivo Peters incomparable 16mm cine film and features the preserved locomotives at work. Contents include: Freight Engines Ivo Peters' colour films of the S&D 7Fs at work on the Somerset and Dorset Railways in the 1960s, on freight and passenger trains. Renaissance Ivo Peters' film on the return of 53808 from South Wales to Radstock and restoration work at Minehead. 53808 The Somerset and Dorset Trust's '88' at work on the West Somerset Railway, including cab sequences. 53807 Remembered Recreating the last 7F to work on the S&D! 53809 Based at Butterley, on the Midland Railway Trust's line, the second preserved 7F is seen at work on the MRT and on BR main lines. 53809 Back to Bath Footage from the 40th anniversary weekend of the closure of the Somerset and Dorset line in 2006 at Green Park, includes Ivo Peters' Bentley and the 92203 and 9F double headed, viewed together for the first time in preservation. The Flying Scotsman from Nuneaton??
Advantages: Good sport biopic
Disadvantages: Subtitles needed!
...grows around accusations he used growth hormone to be six inches taller than dad and nine inches taller than mom. But The Flying Scotsman is not a documentary about performance enhancing drugs but a spirit enhancing semi-fictional movie biopic-using actors-about one of Britain's least heralded world record holders and champions, a man that was driven to succeed to keep depression and suicide at bay...

Flying Scotsman. An even better loco
Advantages: Fantastic, professional footage
Disadvantages: None!
...Whenever I hear the musical sting used by Green Umbrella I know I am going to be in for a real treat. Be it there historical DVDs or their train DVDs. This one is no exception.
The beginning is atmospheric and somewhat moody. They know how to choose the right music at Green Umbrella! And the Flying Scotsman makes a variety of sounds. Yes, of course it chuffs. That's what steam trains do, after...

...The Flying Scotsman
In July 1993, 27-year-old Scottish racing cyclist, Graeme Obree broke the world record for the farthest distance cycled in one hour. It was a record, set by Fransesco Moser, which had previously stood for nine years.
Obree?s world record success was a feat made even more impressive by several factors. Firstly, Obree had previously only competed mostly at amateur level...
