BOB THE GREYHOUND

Advantages: FABULOUS DOGS
Disadvantages: ABSOLUTELY ZILCH

...upon a new owner? Err ... well your new adoptee is likely to have awful teeth. This is as a result of the sloppy food that he/she will have been fed - designed to hydrate the dogs as they run. And the shape of a greyhound's jaw doesn't exactly help, as it allows food to collect over the teeth. Vets use an ultra-sonic technique with high-pressure water to effectively clean them up - and you can maintain cleanliness by giving your dog hide chews and hard biscuits to gnaw, to dislodge food particles and plaque. So, apart from an initial flurry of dental hygiene, there should be no further problems. Greyhounds are very adaptable animals. And contrary to the myth that they require masses of vigorous, sweat-inducing exercise, normal regular walks are quite sufficient. They are fabulously well-mannered on the lead, having been trained to...

Review of Greyhound

Better legislation required to stop cruelty in Greyhound racing.

Advantages: Less cruelty. Less of a strain on rescue centres.
Disadvantages: None

...I must admit. I used to go to Greyhound racing with my friends sometimes on a Saturday night for a bit of fun. We always had a great night out. Even though usually it completely emptied my wallet. But once I started to read up about the plight of the poor dogs used for racing I will never go again. I don't want to play any part in supporting this cruel sport. A great amount of research has been done in regards to Greyhound racing. Various cruelty has been identified. Not all breeders, trainers etc are cruel but there is still a big problem and a lack of legislation. Many puppies that will not be likely to make it as racers are killed. In my eyes, if breeders bring a greyhound into the world then it is their responsibility to provide for it. These dogs should not be viewed as disposable. The breeders should have to arrange...

Going with Greyhound

Advantages: cheap, lots of offers and discounts, frequency of journeys
Disadvantages: obnoxious drivers, cramped seats, arctic air conditioning.

...of the card itself so it is definitely worth picking one up. You can also get discounts with ISIC cards and if you are a Pensioner. The website also has a “specials” section that gives details of current offers. These are always worth looking at as sometimes you can save 30% on fairs. CUSTOMER SERVICE AND CHECK IN Mcafferty’s Greyhound ask you to check in 45 minutes before, they sign you in and take your luggage. Staff in the depots have always been friendly and deal with you quickly. Drivers I have noticed tend to be a little less helpful. Once you have boarded the bus you are informed of the route and any meal breaks. They also ask you not to consume hot food and any drinks that can be easily spilt, while travelling on the bus. THE COACHES The coaches themselves are the standard luxury coaches very similar...

Greyhounds

Advantages: Lovely Nature, Not much hair and more
Disadvantages: Whimps

...For the last 9 years i have owned a greyhound, when we got him he was 5 months old when we first brought him home he was a nervous wreck, you would have to put treats on the ground infront of him to get him to walk a few steps, he had lived in kennels all his life so i decided to give him a home. When i tell people i have a greyhound the first thing alot of people tend to say is something to do with attacking other animals, the views given off by greyhound racing make people think they are vicious animals but they really are not. Living with other animals: I currently have 2 cats 1 greyhound and 1 greyhound puppy. They are all fine together, and are happy to drink from the same bowl at the same time. i used to have a rabbit and you could put it on the same bed as the dog and he would not take any notice. With small Children...

Greyhounds make greyt pets

Advantages: Easy, friendly, relaxed gentle dogs
Disadvantages: delicate and tend to be easily injured

..., and makes all the other dogwalkers turn and gasp because she is so fast. I love the way she snoozes the day away (but doesn't let me work late in case I miss teatime!) So, what are the downsides? Theft. When I got her she was skinny from her racing days, and vastly hungry. We had to get used to hiding all our food, nothing could be left out or it would be stolen in seconds. This has improved a great deal with a decent diet and clicker training. Vet bills. Greyhounds have very thin skin, practically no body fat, can move at 40 miles an hour, and have a very low pain threshhold. Their long skinny legs are vulnerable to damage, and a lot of ex-racers , like mine, have ongoing problems after injuries sustained on the track. I've used an awful lot of Vetrap and spent quite a lot on painkillers and glucosamine supplements (for...

Ex Racing Greyhounds as Pets

Advantages: Get yourself a loving dog - and very possibly save his life
Disadvantages: Depends on the dog - see review

...I've owned my greyhound dog, Max, for years now. Like most greyhound rescue dogs he was a racing greyhound - there are thousands of retired racers in rehoming centres and not many homes to go around. Sadly I know many are put straight on to the "7 day list" and then killed by kennels that do that, because they will never rehome them all. But dont go out and start rescuing them until you know what you are getting. DISCLAIMER: all dogs are different. the following applies to many, but not all, greyhounds, and will absolutely not apply to greyhound crosses, who are completely different! So dont be put off by one thing - just ask for a less usual greyhound! Greyhounds make FABULOUS pets - if you suit them. They are NOT watchdogs, they will NOT play games and chase balls for hours (or sometimes at all!), they will NOT go on an all day...

Owning a Greyhound_The Reality!

Advantages: Gets The Owner Out Of The House
Disadvantages: Your Kitchen Has To Be Like Fort Knox!!

...We first started looking into getting a dog about 9 months ago.Didnt have a clue which sort to get,and mulled over the usual ones;Labrador,Alsation etc.It was only when we read an article in the local paper about greyhounds that we started to think about having one as a pet.The article was from the Retired Greyhound Trust and explained how these dogs were,in many cases, dumped when they had served their usefulnes i.e when their racing days were over.As a greyhound hardly ever races past the age of 4 and live till 12-14 years old you can see the size of the problem. We mentioned the idea to various people and had loads of negative feedback."They need a lot of exercise", "theyre viscious dogs".It seems like everyone had something bad to say about them. Undetered,we spoke to the people that ran the trust and they came out for a chat...

Off the track with a greyhound!

Advantages: Loving, Great with kids
Disadvantages: Can be lazy, takes up a lot of floor space

...rewarding when you see the dog change from being very quiet and wary to being very loving, affectionate and playful. My children adore her and she doesn't seem to bothered by them leaning all over her. My son was terrified of any dog before we had fimble, even the tiniest of dogs, but having fimble has changed that. Some of the places which rehome like to have a donation when you get a dog, but the place we got fimble from was just happy for fimble to get a new home. I do find greyhounds to have sensitve stomachs, and finding the right food can be a hassle but when you get there it is worth it. As playful as she is, no throwing frisbees or playing catch the ball with her as she doesn't seem to bothered by it. A good run round a field once a day though is great fun. Never in a field with sheep though as I found out a couple of weeks...

adopt a greyhound

Advantages: loving, loyal and lots of fun
Disadvantages: none

...I got my first Greyhound two years ago, I had lost my Border Collie three years ago previous to adopting Louise. I came across her by chance as my daughter was working at a training kennels as part of her Duke of Edingborough course, she said a Greyhound had come up for rehoming and did I want her as she knew i missed having a dog around. At first i was not really interested as i had the impression that Greyhounds were too lively, too skinny and not very lovable and really wanted to have another collie, but my husband had grown up with these dogs and was a fan of the Greyhound breed, so i went to look at her my first impression was that she was a very beautiful and elegant dog her fur was so soft and she really was not skinny at all but had a strong muscular body. I fell in love with her instantly her brown eyes were so sad i just...

THE FOOD OSCARS

Advantages: ALL YUMMY
Disadvantages: BAD FOR THE TUMMY

...meat products are fine!!! So without further a do, prepare your taste buds for my top ten grub choices! 10. McDONALDS Ok, its unhealthy, it?s junk food and it does nothing for the figure but its just so yummy. Who would ever think that a pate made up of mutant cows eyeholes, noseholes and ****holes could be so delicious. Well Ronald McDonald himself discovered this and decided to open a whole chain of restaurants selling the delicacy. Now McDonalds also has a full range of things on their menu to cater for all tastes including Veggie Burgers for all you Herbivores out there! Other good offers are when they branch out a bit and do things such as chicken ticka burgers! McDonalds is your cheap and cheerful restaurant but the meals are surprisingly filling. Well actually that?s not entirely true, me and my chums have a theory that Mc...
