Lidl
Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: none
...A little bit of Lidl history
Lidl is the last name of the man who founded the store, Ludwig Lidl. The company was founded in the 1930's by a member of the Schwarz family. In 1973 Lidl opened their first discount store but then in 1977 the opened another 30. The right to use the Lidl name had to be bought and was bought from Ludwig for 1000 deutsche mark.
There is some confusion about the way Lidl is pronounced, most comonly people pronounce it lid-ell but this is wrong. It is actually pronounced Lee-dell which is the german pronunciation.
Personally i have always pronounced it lid-ell.
I live across the road from a lidl store and it is so handy. I do not go there to do my weekly shopping but i go for the basics, bread, milk etc. I also love the special offers and great deals that they offer. Deals they have had recently include...

Lidl leaving the brands behind
Advantages: Cheap and cheerful, easy parking
Disadvantages: Mainly own branded goods
...at 22p for a huge pack, 100g own brand coffee at 99p and a truly delicious cheese and chive quiche for £1.09, who's complaining? The own brand tinned and packeted goods are cheap and cheerful and other better known products often appear on Lidl's shelves. McVities biscuits, Branston pickles and Nescafe coffee have all been available recently. Frozen foods tend to be pretty much similar in price to other supermarkets and the selection is very varied.
Where Lidl fail dismally in my opinion is their predilection for adding gelatine to everything sweet. I am a vegetarian, so I do not eat gelatine, it is an animal product so I avoid it. It is very frustrating to select a fruit yogurt or frozen gateaux and then find it has gelatine as the setting ingredient. I have mentioned it to staff with varying degrees of hilarity following their...

A LIDL money goes a long way
Advantages: Cheap.......very, very, cheap. And a great range of foods
Disadvantages: Haphazard storage on occasion, manky veg
...I have to confess, I used to think of LIDL with some amoutn of disdain. Although we never had one locally to me as a child, visits to stores near friends houses always left me with a bad impression. However, when one opened up not five minutes from my house, in the interests of fairness, I had to give it a try .
Actually, to hell with fairness. There was one reason, and one reason only why i entered the store that day. Bratwurst! I feel a little backstory is in order here.
I grew up an army brat. Whenever my dad got posted, so did we. We moved between England and Germany pretty much constantly for the first ten years of my life, and I got used to the diet over there. As I grew older, most of the foods i'd eaten vanished from my memory, but one particular food was etched in my memory- Bratwurst, a large, slightly spiced german sausage...

A Lidl Respect
Advantages: Great value, money back guarantee
Disadvantages: Small range
...You know the Erasure song, don’t you? A Little Respect? Well, sing this to the tune. It’ll be fun, honest!
(In my neverending quest to be a bit different, here's a bit of fun, but the info is in there, I promise! And this is the extended remix – it’s got a few more verses than the original!)
A Lidl Respect
I tried to discover
A little something to make food cheaper
My husband has gone
It’s breaking my heart
I don’t know what to do
I’ve got no money too
That’s what gave me the reason
That’s what’s making me work so hard
I can’t take no more
I can’t take no more
I can’t take no more
I can’t take no more
Beans…
I need some salad
So listen please,
Give Lidl respect
Like me.

Lidl by Lidl they they are getting worse.
Advantages: See text.
Disadvantages: See text.
...I would just like to write a review on Lidl, for my sins I admit to actually having shopped there before now - I am still receiving couonselling for it! But in all fairness though, there are a small number of advantages to this wonderful German shop, although they possibly get outweighed by the disadvantages. However, whatever your feelings and thoughts (or whatsoever else they may be) on this shop I intend to break from my usual style of writing in order to criticallyl review this one.
Advantages:
The shop is usually much smaller, therefore you don't spend quite so much time as you actually would do elsewhere in looking for what you want.
There are no added frills such as toilets; restaurants and/ or clothes departments in order to make you spend more money. But with that said, they do usually in fact have a small section...

A lidl cash goes a long way
Advantages: great prices and no frills
Disadvantages: some unknown brands
...In this current climate of feeling the pinch we are told that people are abandoning their preferences for brands and going for cheaper options. No retailer embodies this trend more than Lidl.
If you have time, and we seldom do, as we all work 60+ hours a week and tend to try to get the shopping done in a single visit once a month, it is nice to cherry pick the best deals from a variety of shops.
We have recently returned from a fortnight's break in Cornwall, spent in a delightful holiday cottage near Penzance and whilst there we tried some of the alternatives offered by the Lidl store in Newlyn.
They are a good for the basics and the prices are low enough to be worth a punt on things that you would normally pay that bit extra for.
An example of this was the Corn Flakes. At less than 75p for a 500 gram box branded as...

Lidl vrs Mainstream Supermarkets.
Advantages: Cheap honest prices.
Disadvantages: Dont offer everything you may need.
...Lidl Supermarket
Newton Road 173
TQ2 7AJ Torquay/Torbay
The general concensus is that when times are hard we reduce the quality of produce we buy from a Supermarket. I personally dont agree with this. In my opinion people tend to change where they buy it from in the main.
Lets be honest, most people a few years ago would never admit to shopping in Lidl. Perish the thought. Actually once you have braved the taboo you will find that it has a lot to offer.
The prices for the majority of the items are cheaper than the mainstream chains. The quality in generally the same. I would reiterate that all teh main players have their "Own" brands, which i have found in general not to be as good as the brands on offer in Lidl. Tesco value products in the main are of a low quality.
Its food name snobbery basically.
Lidl uses...

So cheap it should be fashionable. LIDL.
Advantages: Save ££££££££'s
Disadvantages: Limited on range
...to Pampers. They do sell Pampers nappies and wipes, Heinz formula and baby food.
Meat/Poultry: This is my all time favourite bargain, Minced beef £1.99, the same size is usually around £2.50 in ASDA or Morrison?s. A few weeks ago I bought a pack from ASDA and it was fatty and grisly, LIDL?s is in my opinion much better quality. Chicken Breast £3.49, the pack is a generous size for my family of 3 so I split the pack into 2 and freeze it. A medium size Chicken cost around £2.88. They sell Steaks, Lamb chops etc. All the meat/poultry products I have bought have always been nice and I?ve never had any complaints when I?ve used it in cooking. Bixies: LIDL?s version of Weetabix, taste exactly the same and half the price, currently on offer for £1.99 for a box of 48, usually around £2.48. Wine: (We are getting serious), you can usually get...

I want a Lidl of that !!
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: pay for bag's, untidy stores
...I bet for many of you on here, when you hear the name ‘Lidl’ think cheap food, bad quality, for poor people, and until recently I would have fully agreed with you. My opinion of the German supermarket lidl has never been very high and as an influential teenager I would have never been caught dead in my local branch.
My first experience of Lidl was in 1995 when a new store opened in Frome, Somerset. My parents were never poor but we loved a bargain and Lidl’s looked like the place we would get this. I wasn’t very impressed initially as I could see no big names like walkers or Cadbury’s and the sound of baked beans costing as little as 4 pence sounded far from intriguing.
However my opinion changed dramatically last year when I found a very respectable Management job at…yes you guesses it- Lidl...

You get a lot for a Lidl
Advantages: Very functional, great value, lovely chocolate
Disadvantages: Limited range of items
...limited range of products than the major supermarkets with less choice within a certain product group e.g. I saw only one type of sparkling water or tins of sweetcorn in only one size.
Limited range of branded products e.g. Nestle, Kelloggs. They mostly have Lidl labelled brands available of which I?ve never heard of before !
No separately staffed counters e.g. customer service, meat, delicatessen.
No customer toilets.
POSITIVE FEATURES
I was pleased to find quite a few of these and they include the following :
Adequate parking.
Polite staff (when you can get hold of them !).
Very good value for a wide range of food and non-food products. If you can get past the odd brand names then I?d recommend the chocolate, biscuits, cereals, muesli, crisps, cheeses, nuts, beer, toiletries, pitta bread, ciabatta bread, tinned...
