March On!

Advantages: Wonderful scenery, very factual, cute penguins
Disadvantages: some sad moments

...March of the Penguins is a film which I had been undecided about watching for quite some time. After finally buying it me and my hubby sat down last night to watch it. I was aware before the film began that it was more of a documentary but this did not bother me as I do occasionally like documentaries if they are on good subjects. The start of the film shows the amazing South Pole and the narration tells us that at one time people did live here as it was once a much warmer place before the land split and moved and subsequently became covered in ice. Morgan Freeman gives the narration to the documentary and he tells us of one tribe which has remained in the South Pole and how they are penguins. Firstly we meet the Emperor penguins, the males, which are by the sea feeding and all of they at the same time start out on a very long walk...

Do Not Underestimate Bon Marche.

Advantages: They cater for the mature woman and they also stock the larger sizes.
Disadvantages: None

...Bon Marche have always been labelled as a clothing store that caters for the mature woman, I admit that I am mature but I will not admit to being dowdy or too far behind the times. The Bon Marche store in our small town is quite a large store with a modern frontage and inside the clothing is all very well displayed. If I am looking for something extra special, maybe to wear to a wedding or a party then a visit to the city is on the cards but for everyday clothing Bon Marche has quite a lot to offer. The store itself is sparkling clean and given that I am a regular visitor I get a warm welcome from the staff. I also have a Bon Marche loyalty card which offers no points or financial gain but when the store has special offers and sales then you are one of the first to know, you also receive vouchers that will entitle you to a discount...

This United State, Colin Forbes (EDIT)

Advantages: Good use of locations, good descriptions
Disadvantages: Stretches credibility beyond breaking point

...The premise behind This United States by Colin Forbes is an interesting one. Not unique, but certainly interesting. The USA has decided to take over the UK by a mixture of guile, treachery, bribery and armed aggression. And only Tweed and his team of British Secret Service agents can save the day! The novel opens with a bang, as a team of CIA assassins attempt to murder the former head of the CIA in Mayfair. Fortunately secret agent Paula Gray stumbles over him, save his life and so Cord Dillon is spirited away to a secret underground bunker on the Kent coast. The novel is over 530 pages in length and is packed with exciting incidents such as the above in Switzerland, in the Black forest and in Kent. It has all the hallmarks of being a great novel. But in my opinion, sadly, the book is flawed. And fatally so. Tweed and his...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Colin Forbes The Cauldren

Advantages: Another great book by Colin Forbes
Disadvantages: A little bit over the top

...This is the fourteenth book in the Bob Newman, Paula Grey and Tweed stories; this book was released on 10/01/1997 I my opinion this book is definitely on par with Colin Forbes' other S.I.S novels. This is a brief description of the story. Paula Grey and Bob Newman discover a woman's body floating on the Californian coast, her identity unknown. At the same time, a ship disappears into the fog. Sensing an impending catastrophe, Tweed hurtles across the globe, as a continent begins. This is a fast paced, action all the way book as a billionaire industrialist called Vincent Bernard Moloch with concerns in the US, the UK and Middle East, and the director of the world's biggest multinational called AMBECO, invents a new type of explosive called Xenobium. Supposedly more powerful than the A-bomb, Moloch makes a point of demonstrating it...

Flashman on the March

Advantages: Flashman back to his best
Disadvantages: Is this the end?

...Flashman on the March - George MacDonald Fraser There are some books you buy on a recommendation, some you buy on a whim and some you buy because they're by a favourite author. And then there are those that when you see them on the shelf or in an advertisement you immediately stop what you're doing and rush to the nearest bookshop to buy a copy. For me, finding out that there was a new Flashman novel coming off the presses was just one of these momentous occasions. The previous book (Flashman and the Tiger) had been a collection of three, shortish, stories and many fans took this as a sign that the well was dry and we'd seen all we were going to see of Flashman. This book knocks that idea for six and delivers a vintage Flashman tale. In the 1960's Fraser had an idea for a book. A keen student of history, both military...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Bon Marché well worth a visit

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

...I admit it, I shop at Bon Marché. There I've got it off my chest. I feel a lot better for that. Not only do I shop there but lots of other people shop there too. My mum shops there and lots of older ladies do. Does this mean it is an old ladies shop? NO!!!!! Let me tell you why I shop there. I am vertically challenged. I am not saying I am small. I am 5'4”, which used to be the average height for a woman. My figure is a full hour glass shape. In a lot of shops the clothes are designed for the taller woman. Trouser legs are too long or sleeves need shortening. At Bon Marché they seem to cater for people like me. The reason there are so many older ladies there is they are smaller too and so the clothes fit them as well. What about the style of clothing? If the shop is full of senior citizens then the clothes...

Bon Marche - not just for the older end

Advantages: Good range. Reasonably priced
Disadvantages: Not for the young

...When you get to a certain age (over 40 for example) you sometimes find it difficult to get clothes that not only fit nicely (middle age spread is not that easy to get rid of) but suit your age. If you are not careful you either end up in fashionable clothes that are far too young for you or else you finish up looking about 60. Bon Marche seems to have solved this problem. No, this is not just a shop for the older ladies. Both my teenage daughter and my mother have bought things from there and been quite satisfied. I must admit that my daughter only goes in when she is accompanying me and does not shop there regularily but she has come across some nice items that she tends to wear for work. They seem to cover many sizes as well. Unfortunately I'm a bit on the large size - not overmuch - but I do find myself struggling to stay...
