1997 (R) Ford Mondeo 2.0 Ghia X hatchback
Advantages: Smooth, comfortable drive; spacious; cheap to run, cruise control; heated windscreen
Disadvantages: Electrics (heater, cd player, radio) can be a bit 'iffy'; rust now appearing
...action, though - this is the only car I have ever owned on which grating the gears happens AT ALL.
RUNNING COSTS:
Apart from fuel (see above @ tyre pressures 35psi), the other major cost on a car is servicing, and the Mondeo has been very good in that respect too. Service intervals are 20,000 miles, with an oil-change at 10,000 (cam-belt change at 40,000 - EXPENSIVE!) and my car has needed (until this year) little or nothing else done to it. It still uses no oil (5W-30W - a very thin spec oil) between services and the CO emissions are well below MOT levels. I have had 2 cat converters - [NB, one was non-Ford, lasted only 18 months, and speed bumps destroy these at a frightening rate!]
I have just had my first 'expensive' service (£500), which included 2x tyres and brakes (first set in 100,000 miles!) as well as the first 'repair...

Ford Mondeo ST220
Advantages: Comfort with performance. Smile factor
Disadvantages: high running costs
...from Germany.
Mondeo's of all specs do have some common problems, the main one I have come across with mine are the rear bushes. These have to be replaced after about 20-25k. It's not just a bush though, the whole rear sub-frame has to be replaced. I got mune under warranty, but I understand this can cost around £500. I also had a starter motor problem a couple of months ago. Not just a starter motor, had to have the flywheel and part of the clutch replaced. Took them over a week and bill was £900, ouch!!!
Of course Ford UK are totally not interested when you try to get them to accept that 35k mileage is not acceptable for a starter motor.
However don't let this put you off. Overall the ST220 is a fabulous car, great looks, great performance and spacious. Room for the wife and kids and all the holiday stuff, we drove to Holland...

Ford Mondeo 1997 Zetec-e (Mk II)
Advantages: Practical, roomy, comfortable, agile, economical, rapid.
Disadvantages: Avoid tatty ones and don't pay too much.
...for a car this size. An excellent buy! Just for your info it cost me £8 less to insure than a Rover 420 SDI, work that out? I can't!
N.B My Mondeo has a chip in my key which switches off the immobilser, my key is wearing thin and to replace it is £180 with Ford but an independent key cutter has done it for £75. I also replaced the complete front brakes myself, the parts were £80 in total....

Ford Mondeo 2.0 Si
Advantages: Good looks, versatile large boot, handling.
Disadvantages: For us none.
...company they have adapted over the years thorugh all the up's and down's that the car market has been through and I think they have come out a winner and now as well as the Ford Motor Company they also own Aston Martin, Jaguar and own 25% of Mazda. When is a Ford a Ford you may ask yourself, I think that the influence of the other companies under the umbrella of Ford have brought in thier own little touches and as a result they are making some great Cars.
Some models you will know of are
Fiesta.
Escort.
Focus.
Sierra.
Granada.
Ka.
Galaxy.
Cortina.
Capri,
Consul.
Puma.
This is without naming the commercial vehicles Ford make.
Some of these Cars are now classics and are treated as such. The famous Blue Badge has now become a legend and I think Henry would be proud.

Another great Mondeo
Advantages: Reliable good handling and cheap to run.
Disadvantages: Depreciation.
...I traded in my old 1.8LX Mondeo last year after 9 very reliable years motoring and 125,000 on the clock.
I am now the proud owner of an Xreg (new shape)1.8LX(petrol) hatchback which had 13,500 miles.
This cost £8995 but the specification was a revelation. ABS,Power steering,6 airbags,CD player,Air Con,electric windows front and back and heated windscreen(great in the winter). There is a small container for your sunglasses in the centre of the roof above the drivers head accessed by a spring push clip. This is a great idea as you can reach up take out your glasses without taking your eye of the road or scrabbling in the glove compartment, so in effect it is a safety feature.Trivial I know and no reason to buy a Mondeo although it does demonstrate attention to detail. The boot is very spacious as in most of the larger Fords
The LX is in...

My Ford
Advantages: All
Disadvantages: No
...* Rating:
* On the road price: £11,195 - £15,395
* For : Dynamics, build, smart styling
* Against : Noise, mean kit
Driving:
The Fiesta's forte. Ford really knows how to make cars handle, so even the cheapest Fiesta will thrill the driver in you. Steering is crisp (all models have a leather wheel), corners are taken tidily and enthusiastically yet the ride remains supple too. A class act, enhanced on the Zetec S model to perfection. Indeed, it's better than the ST, which has more grip but less finesse. The ST's engine is quicker but noisier than the 1.6-litre Zetec-S too. No Fiesta engine is quiet though, while road and wind noise also join the cacophony. But supportive, high-set seats and a spot-on driving position pleases, making up for the lack of space for the clutch foot.
Marketplace:
Plentiful choice is sensibly...

Mondeo Man
Advantages: Nice car to drive, Prices are coming down for below average examples
Disadvantages: Very hard to do any kind of DIY work on
...I recent purchased a newer Ford to replace my ageing, but ever so reliable Escort. I decided on the Ford Mondeo with a little help from my insurance compnay. Im with a company called Ford Insured , whom only insure Fords.
I came across the N reg old shape model when my friend came across it when it was put in part exchange at a local dealer. At the price of only £1375 for a 1996 four door Turbo diesel family saloon I decided to buy it as a bit of a brucy bargain. The car has had a bad life and shows several minor battle scars, but Im sure with a bit of tending loving car I will get the car it back into good condition.
The engine in this car has got 119000 miles on it, but it still pulls well. I find the car slow when starting from stand still on a steep bank until the Turbo cuts in at about 3500rpm. The Turbo diesel models I feel...

FORD MONDEO ST200 VERY FAST CAR
Advantages: Fast, Spacious, Reliable, Family Car to win the miss's over for having a fast car
Disadvantages: Limited amount made, expensive inurance
...This is a must car for any Ford enthusiast that has a family to consider as well as wanting a car that will shift when you plant your foot firmly to the floor.
The Mondeo ST 200, (201 BHP but the name sounds better rounded off). This is produced from a bullet proof Duratech 2544cc V6 engine. The car has traction control and ABS to help you in any emergency situation.
The ST 200 was made from 1999 to 2000 on a T, V, W and X plate due to the revision of the new car registration dates. Therefore these are a rare car to get hold of, especially the 500 limited edition versions.
The cars body work was not changed much from the ST24 apart from a couple of minor changes such as the grill.
The interior is great as the front recaro?s hug you into them as you through the car round corners. The dash is amazing with the blue clocks only...

I maybe have damaged this by likening it to Tony Blair.....
Advantages: Cheap to buy, good standard of build, high spec, comfortable, totally reliable
Disadvantages: Thirsty, wings turn nasty with age, brakes, image, bumpers are very brittle
...Tony Blair made a remark in 1996, allegedly he once watched a man polishing his shiny new Ford Mondeo, and saw him as a potential Tory voter. He was in his mid-thirties, had a middling income and owned his own house. He had a family saloon, a wife and two children.
?Mondeo Man? was the moniker Tony Blair attached to this group of middle-Englanders, and these where the people who ultimately moved him to ?Number 10?.
I think this is backwards, the mk2 Ford Mondeo is a product of New Labour rather than ?Mondeo Man? a product of New Labour. I know, I know.... but run with me here.
New labour looked good in 1997, it was new and shiny, it was fashionable, and lots of people voted for it. It was fundamentally flawed however, and rapidly became a byword for mediocrity, shattered illusions, the political equivalent...
