...I have minimal need for a currency conversion site so when I do use them for either business or pleasure I want something that is simple and easy to use. I have used in the past a variety of sites and found that many are complex or you need to get through a number of screens before you get the answer you want. This is not the case with xe.com, which has now become the sole site I use for this. First off, the name is great and very easy to remember. This might not be a huge deal for many but if you use a variety of computers (home, work, girlfriends house, parents, etc...) you need one you can easily remember. This does the trick nicely. ...I am very well travelled and have a vast knowledge of foreign exchange (this review is aimed more for the euro). There is no better way to obtain your holiday money than to take the sterling and change it at your destination. No matter what you are told, no commission etc you will not get as much for your money anywhere in the UK as you will get when you reach your destination. If you are travelling to Spain, the Canary Islands or any other Spanish Island, you will get a higher rate at a local exchange than you will ever get here in the UK or at the airports. Even if you go to the post office and get your commission free euros, you will receive a much lower rate than you will in your local resort. Also, don't get collared for euro cheques either. ...I have held A halifax ISA for quite a while. I have found their customer service to be very good, with the staff all very polite, friendly and efficient. I have also been regularly sent information, such as how to make the most of my ISA. However, for me the major value of an account with the Halifax has been that it is very cheap to pay in cheques that are in a foreign currency. This is good for those who regularly use the internet to make money, for example by doing surveys, and then receives cheques in US dollars etc. The staff are always very good about all the paperwork it creates, and a letter is sent out when the cheque is processed to confirm how much the amount was converted it to. The halifax has a number of small local branches making it very convenient. I would recommend them to those wishing to pay in foreign currency...

...It is a myth that you can always buy cheaper foreign currency abroad. I myself would buy a reasonable amount of foreign currency in the UK before I go abroad (For some smaller countries, I would buy US Dollar). In theory, you usually get a lower rate for your own currency in a foreign country because you have no alternative but to buy their local currency. Except for some Spanish and Greek resorts, British Pound does not seem to be very popular in many foreign countries, and you are unlikely to get a good rate for your pounds. The truth is, in rip-off Britain, greedy banks and travel agencies charge us too much for foreign currency. Having profited from the spread between buying and selling rates, they go on to deduct a commission charge which is subject to minimum charge. So, in the end, we end up with less foreign money in our hands...
