When it was released in 1994 Four Weddings and a Funeral quickly became a huge international success, pulling in the kind of audiences most British films only dream of. It's proof that sometimes the simplest ideas are the best: in terms of plot, the title pretty much says it all. Revolving around, well, four weddings and a funeral (though not in that order), the film follows Hugh Grant's confirmed bachelor Charles as he falls for visiting American Carrie (Andy McDowell), whom he keeps bumping into at the various functions. But with this most basic of premises, screenwriter Richard Curtis has crafted a moving and thoughtful comedy about the perils of singledom and that ever-elusive search for true love. In the wrong hands, it could have been a horribly schmaltzy affair, but Curtis' script--crammed with great one-liners and beautifully judged characterisations--keeps things sharp and snappy, harking back to the sparkling Hollywood romantic comedies of the 30s and 40s. The supporting cast, including Kristin Scott Thomas, Simon Callow and Rowan Atkinson (who starred in the Curtis-scripted television show Blackadder) is first rate, at times almost too good: John Hannah's rendition of WH Auden's poem " Funeral Blues" over the coffin of his lover is so moving you think the film will struggle to re-establish its ineffably buoyant mood. But it does, thanks in no small part to Hugh Grant as the bumbling Charles (whose star-making performance compensates for a less-than-dazzling Andie MacDowell). Though it's hardly the fault of Curtis and his team, the success of the Four Weddings did have its downside, triggering a rash of far inferior British romantic comedies. In fact, we had to wait until 1999's Notting Hill for another UK film to match its winning charm--scripted, yet again, by Curtis and starring Grant. --Edward Lawrenson ... less

Four Weddings And A Funeral
Advantages: Brilliant characters and storyline.
Disadvantages: Disappointing special features.
...This film was released in 1994 and is a romantic comedy/drama starring the hugely popular Hugh Grant, and American actress; Andie MacDowell. The story follows the life of Charles (Grant) and his colourful, upper class British friends. Wondering if he will ever find the right woman, Charles finally thinks he has in Carrie (MacDowell) at a wedding he and his friends attend. Just when things seem to be going rather swimmingly, Carrie reveals to Charles that she is engaged to be married and cannot enter a relationship with him. Unfortunately, Carrie seems to become a regular guest within the same circles as poor Charles.
The viewer sees the group of friends attend to these lavish weddings, each leading to another with regards to what happened during the previous one, and we also then experience the tragedy of losing one of the friends...

Four Cretins and a Funeral
Advantages: Some laughs, some groans and some grimaces
Disadvantages: Largely quite predictable

Things That Work, Things That Don?t
The dialogue helps enormously, as Craig isn?t afraid to make a concerted effort to turn his back on the relative safety of films like Four Weddings and a Funeral. There?s a lot of swearing here, some relatively tame sexual content and a bit of nudity, sufficient to allow the audience to feel as though they are watching an adult comedy, without really going over the top. The story is, however, a little predictable. As each character reveals his narrative hand, it?s pretty obvious which way things are going to go and it would be unfair and unwise to say that this kind of thing hasn?t been done before. As soon as there?s a mention of blackmail or family secrets, it wouldn?t exactly take a genius to work out what happens next and, sure enough, almost by numbers, that?s entirely what happens.

No Weddings, One Funeral
Advantages: Good performances, a string of entertaining set-pieces
Disadvantages: Even with the twists, it's all a bit predictable
...Trouble brewing at a family funeral...
If it's a traditional British farce that you're after, 'Death at a Funeral' will surely tick all the right boxes, as it explores a range of preposterous situations throughout its ninety minute run-time. Released in 2007 and directed by Frank Oz (yes, that's the chap who voices both 'Yoda' and 'Kermit the Frog'), the film centres upon a sombre family occasion which spirals firmly out of control. Not to be confused with this year's Hollywood remake of the same name (which sees the pint-sized Peter Dinkage reprising his role), the movie explores a range of themes which generally send-up the flawed British character - think of 'Fawlty Towers', and you'll get a geneneralised idea of proceedings, although Death at a Funeral rarely reaches the comedic highs of the aforementioned sitcom.
