Fabulous Fowey

Advantages: Beautiful, interesting, welcoming, glorious!
Disadvantages: Too far away! Bring Cornwall closer - NOW!

...GENERAL: I first found fabulous Fowey, pronounced Foy (like toy) rather than Fow-wee, back in December 2001. Our friends Alex and Claire had come to stay. Claire was pregnant with their first child and was feeling a little uncertain about going on holiday the following year with a small baby. I suggested a UK holiday together (we had been to Spain together previously) as you, generally, know what to expect from the accommodation, you know you can get your usual brand of nappies etc and, should you need one, you know how the health system works and would have no stress regarding language problems. Al and Claire were up for it, so while the lads discussed important issues (ha ha) downstairs, Claire and I spent an hour or so on the internet looking at various cottage rental sites. As we both fancied going to the Eden Project in Cornwall...

Fowey

Advantages: Beautiful Views
Disadvantages: Very steep walking

...We visted Fowey a couple of times last year while on a family holiday. Staying in Looe we drove around to Fowey and found a car park at the top of the Village. Little did I know what a steep hill we had to walk down to get to the hub of the village. (Definitely recommend sensible footwear if you take the walking option) We walked all the way down, not realising that there is a car park mini bus which will take you there in more comfort. Idon't know how much this would have been because I didn't get on it, but judging by the River Taxi fares, i would expect it to be very reasonable. There are few small shops in the Village and a museum and banks. By the waterside, there is a fish and chip restaurant, the usual ice-cream stand and some Public Houses. Views are beautiful across the water and there are lots of boat trips on offer...

Pure Indulgence

Advantages: Stunning Hotel, Great Attention to Detail, Service Excellent, what more...
Disadvantages: Parking

...Just come back from a three night break at The Old Quay House Hotel in Fowey (pronounced Foy) in Cornwall. Having done a lot of internet research to have chosen the Old Quay hotel in the first place, and then whilst staying there to have been able to look at the alternatives, I am certain this is the best hotel in Fowey by a distance. The hotel proved to be an excellent location in the centre of the town. A lovely hotel right in the centre of Fowey. Don't be put off by the idea of staying in one of the "rooftop view" rooms, as they actually overlook the street outside, which is so nice first thing in the morning. The sun terrace at the back of the hotel is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine, chill out, read a book and watch the boats go by. Fowey is a town with very narrow streets and stepping out of the hotel into Fore...

Breath taking views in a beautiful Hotel

Advantages: Stunning Views
Disadvantages: No Parking

...The Fowey hotel is a real gem. Set in the picturesque seaside village of Fowey the hotel really does have views to boast about. It really is worth paying that bit extra for a room with a sea view. From our room we were able to sit and watch the goings on of the busy port below us. I would have happily sat all day looking out the window. If you don't have a sea view the bar and dining room offer equally good views and if the weather is good the view can be enjoyed from the terraces with a Cornish cream tea. The hotel is quaint and individual inside and has been sympathetically decorated to keep its character. Our room was large well decorated and of a high standard. The rooms did not have Sky or cable but with that view who needs TV? The staff are friendly and helpful and you get the feeling of staying with a large family rather than...

For our tomorrows ...today!

Advantages: A great romance, thriller, comedy, tragedy.............
Disadvantages: None!!!

...Not being the sort of person who enjoys reading about wars or conflicts of any sort I was in two minds about the book I will now review, the only thing that swung me was the fact there was the promise of love affairs thrown in! The book I will now review is "For all our tomorrows" by Freda Lightfoot. This book displays on the front cover the landing of thousands upon thousands of American marines onto an unsuspecting town called Fowey in Cornwall. The friendly invasion happens barely a few months before victory is called in the second world war. The town of Fowey was deemed as the perfect camp for all military personnel due to the fact it is the most thought of place for an invasion by the Germans and their associates. The story is told from the perspective of two sisters, the first is Bette Tredinnick who is the younger...

Review of For All Our Tomorrows - Freda Lightfoot

"Writers should be read, but neither seen nor heard."

Advantages: One of the best authors of the 20th century
Disadvantages: None

...in her teens when uncle - a magazine editor - published one of her stories and got her a literary agent. Her love for Cornwall - that is depicted so much in her works - began during her childhood when her family spent their holidays there. In 1926, the du Mauriers purchased a holiday home called Ferryside in Fowey on the rocky southwestern coast of Cornwall. It was here - when Daphne found the constant entertaining in the family home in London too distracting for her writing - that she persuaded her parents to let her move to. Daphne Du Maurier began writing short stories in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, 'The Loving Spirit' ( The title was inspired by lines from an Emily Brontë poem) was published. It received wonderful reviews and brought her to the attention of Major ( later Sir Lieutenant Colonel ) Frederick Arthur Montague...

E10 OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Advantages: Super clear prints and so similar to an SLR the transition is easy
Disadvantages: Price/size but will not worry an enthusiast.

...Having been an owner for 30 years of Olympus SLR Cameras including the OM10 and the OM2Spot(currently in my possession) I was attracted to the E10 Olympus Camera with its 4.3million pixels. My previous digital camera comprised 1.3 million pixels and produced quite good photos. The E10 has produced phenomenal photos of the Eden project here in Cornwall including a metre long panorama which has been sold to a local public house- framed and now on the restaurant wall. I have a superb A3 Epson print of Truro cathedral and a fantastic print of the Fowey Training School yacht in full sail. This camera though it cost £1249 from Jessops has given me the biggest pleasure I have ever received from photography. I have just been to a wedding and can claim to have outclassed the professional photographer- I could check my photos as I went! I also...

NEXT TO YOU, A STORY OF COURAGE

Advantages: Amazing tale of hope and inspiration
Disadvantages: sadly we all know how it ends

...second child, she was shocked, but immediately determined to fight the illness. She ultimately had a mastectomy and chose to change her lifestyle in the hope that a stress-free healthy life would stop the disease from returning. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Caron moved the family to Fowey, Cornwall, where they had a great life, but she was always searching for more holistic treatments and ended up in Byron Bay, Australia where she undertook every therapy going. Whilst her family supported her through everything, at times they also could not understand her need to travel, leaving her family and friends behind her. The book tells it like it is. Gloria does not pull any punches and at times she tells how she could not understand her daughter and how hurt she was by some of Caron's decisions to move away from her family...

Pretty Looe

Advantages: A pretty part of Cornwall
Disadvantages: Steep paths a bit hard on the legs

...occupation of the villagers and Polperro has retained the atmosphere of a fishing village. It even has a fisherman’s choir. It does get very busy in the height of the season so a visit out of season is a good idea so that you can really enjoy the unique character of the village. If you visit the Polperro Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing you can see photographs and articles about the 35 foot pulling and sailing lifeboat, Ryder, which was stationed in Looe from 1902 to 1930. The restored boat is afloat in the harbour adjacent to the museum. Fowey is a further 10 miles or so the other side of Polperro, with its narrow streets of architecture ranging from Elizabethan to Edwardian. If you walk along the high narrow lane of Bull Hill you get a panoramic view over the rooftops of the town to the river. There is a museum in Forte...

Cornish Beauty

Advantages: Wondeful landscapes and seaviews
Disadvantages: none

...restaurant, St Petroc's Bistro and Stein's fish and chips. He also has a deli, patisserie and a gift shop here. There is a working harbour in the centre of the village where you can sit and watch the world go by whilst enjoying a creamy Cornish icecream. Port Isaac where Doc Martin was filmed and also the location used for the first Poldark television series. Narrow winding streets lined with old whitewashed cottages and traditional granite and slate fronted houses, many of which are listed as of architectural or historic importance. A stream runs through the village finding it's way out to sea over the harbour wall.. SOUTH COAST The South coast is a world away from the pumping Atlantic surf of the north coast. Here the river estuaries of the Helford, the Fowey and the Fal can be explored along with unspoilt fishing villages and harbours...
