Now, before going on to the opinion in detail, let me say that I am not going to preach about the rights,wrongs or legalities, of obtaining goodies from file sharing sites. The choice to download software or music from these places is a choice for the individual and their own conscience. I am sitting firmly on the fence on this issue. My solution came by way of an advert I saw on my ISP's website for ZONEALARM. The software is free for private users and downloadable directly from zonealarm.com web site. Download time was minimal, 5 or 6 minutes and installation a doddle. I now run this program every time I am on-line and it works. You get alerted everytime someone tries to access your PC. Any of your applications that require internet access such as webferret, Real player etc will not be allowed to do so until you authorise them. Compatibility with other programs: I have not experienced any problems with other programs while running ZONEALARM but I always unload it if I am not using the internet. Advantages: It's free! It's better than nothing!

...At one time, Grisoft's AVG Antivirus used to have a very cheap and tacky look with nasty looking alien-like creatures displayed on the user interface. I'm also pretty sure that at the time it was one of the only antivirus software programs available for free, though has always been upgradable. I have had bad experiences in the past with older versions of AVG but I'm glad to say that Grisoft have sorted their act out and have improved the program a lot aswell as giving it a more professional looking makeover. Though according to the most recent reports that I've read, AVG only has a detection rate of 85%, it still manages to find and filter out more of the rare viruses which tend to be unknown by other common antivirus programs. Disadvantages: Search facility can be slow if you search a popular word or phrase.

...I have been using softseek.com for about a year now. They have a massive selction of free/share ware all organised in an excellent directory system. What's more helpful is the accuracy of it's seacrh facility. It lists the results with a % to how close it matches the word of phrase you originally typed in, very useful. Every download has its own page describing the program and usually has a snapshot of what the program looks like. It lists the authors name and allows you to view all the software produced by a particular author to. My favorite feature is the ability to search for just freeware, I love using that. Its good to know what licence a particular download holds before you download it. Softseek also offers a bi-weekly newsletter, listing whats new, editors picks and the top downloads.
