Does not need any driver and it is recognized by modern operating system just like any other removable drive or the flash drive and normally assess through the normal method of my computer and file manager explorer. The file opens and you are enabled to operate just like any other hard drive. There are ways to know whether the USB has two and it is through the windows control panel. The USB has some complicating feature for example; some computers have only USB one and others have 2 but the ones that have two are faster in response. ...that a computer system has. Some old systems has USB1 while most modern computers has USB2 which is faster in response. You are also advised to check the USB speed with the freecom drive. There is some way in which you can know on whether the system has USB 2 and the way is through the windows control panel. So this is the only part that you might get a bit troubled as a new user but should not be a dilemma to you. In terms of selling places, I bought mine at Amazon .uk at a good value for money. Oh..and its made by Freecom - a manufacturer I previously thought was pretty reliable (I have their dual layer portable DVD re-writer as well). This drive is billed as being rugged and portable - after all that is the whole point of external portable drives, isnt it? When I got the unit, it was twice as big in capacity as the HDD in my tower PC, so I immediately throught - backup. It didnt come with any back-up soft ware though, which I think is a glaring omission. I paid £89.99 when the offer was on at PC World. ...I bought one of these devices a couple of years ago and it worked excellently. I was very satisfied with the ease of use - you simply plug in the wires and away you go. No need for driver installation etc (on modern operating systems). I used it for over a year for photography and general backup with no problems at all. Essentially, the Freecom device is simply a laptop drive in a little black box. This is good because laptop hard drives are built with portability in mind. ...I've owned my external Freecom CD RW for some time now, and it has given me excellent service, even though I have "hammered" it, burning DVD after DVD of years of stockpiled home video footage. Time after time, I have had great results with just one unsuccessful burn, but that was a faulty disk -which happens sometimes. When I first went in search of a DVD Re-writer, I was very tempted by getting an internal one to save desk-space and they were cheaper. But after some consideration I opted for the external because we have two computers and a laptop and it's just a question of plugging it in to the USB port of any machine I want to work with. ...After a previous experience of my operating system needing a complete re-install and my internal hard drive nearly full of applications and media files. I needed a storage device I could back up and move all my files to, speed up my hard drive and have programs stored in case my operating system would decide to give up on me again. External storage has come down in price a lot lately, and I thought now was a good time to buy. I needed a good amount of space, something that could move files from one device to another quickly, something affordable and something with a recognised name. I've used Freecom products before and I've never had a problem with them. During my search of external hard drives, this hard drive came in a range of sizes from 40gb to 500gb. Advantages: Easy to Install on XP literally plug and play
Disadvantages: Marginally slower than an internal

...means that it can be connected with little fuss. There is in theory a difference in the speed due to this but I hav'nt noticed since it takes time to burn to disc anyway especially to DVD. Another disadvantage is that with the introduction of dual layer devices this single layer version is already yesterdays technology. For anyone thinking of buying a drive like this I would recomment the Freecom as a good reliable drive which is easy to use. There are cheaper drives out there some with dual layer but in this case its better the devil you know. P.S. I am Assumining that it supports USB 2 since there is no mention of it in the packaging I can't be sure. But on the system it is classed as a Hi speed device which usually indicates USB 2. I also see no indication of you being able to use it as a DVD ram drive.... Read review
