Multi-Media Journalism at Bournemouth University

...I am a current, first-year student at Bournemouth University, on the BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism course. I felt that it was about time I told you about the university and the course, as I always have "Journalism student" in my about me section, and often mention the fact that I am studying it here. So without further ado, I shall explain the course. Location of the programme The Multi-Media Journalism course takes place on Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus. The Media School is based in Weymouth House. In the last couple of years, an extension was built on the building, and it now looks very similar to the BBC Television Centre building in terms of style. The Freecom Internet Phone

Advantages: Sleek, Light, Good sound quality, 30 mins Skype voucher and 2 yrs warranty.
Disadvantages: Only works when connected to a computer it is not standalone like some internet phones are.

...I originally started looking for a phone that can be used over the internet of more specifically VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) because my girlfriend and I were going to different universities. I had read a lot of news and other articles about how VOIP was the way to go, where rates to landlines are the cheapest of most providers and calls to other VOIP users are free. I then narrowed down my search to a phone which will work with Skype over the internet, as I think Skype is one of the easier to use and generally better VOIP services. This Freecom phone is entirely compatible with Skype, because it's "Skype Certified". Freecom Classic Trouble Free DVD Burning

Advantages: Hard Working and reliable. Can be moved from PC to PC
Disadvantages: Desk space needed because it's external.

...I've owned my external Freecom CD RW for some time now, and it has given me excellent service, even though I have "hammered" it, burning DVD after DVD of years of stockpiled home video footage. Time after time, I have had great results with just one unsuccessful burn, but that was a faulty disk -which happens sometimes. When I first went in search of a DVD Re-writer, I was very tempted by getting an internal one to save desk-space and they were cheaper. But after some consideration I opted for the external because we have two computers and a laptop and it's just a question of plugging it in to the USB port of any machine I want to work with. Because it also plays DVD movies, it makes it really handy when I am having that long week-end staying at relatives and there's nothing to watch on TV. I can simply plug it into my laptop...

Freecom...or Expensive con?

Advantages: Small footprint, USB connectivity, good capacity, quiet
Disadvantages: All the above completely let down by the units reliability

...Please take a few seconds to rate this at the end - it helps me know if its meaningful or not and I can improve accordingly Ok... Its big...its black...it hums quietly in the corner. Oh..and its made by Freecom - a manufacturer I previously thought was pretty reliable (I have their dual layer portable DVD re-writer as well). This drive is billed as being rugged and portable - after all that is the whole point of external portable drives, isnt it? When I got the unit, it was twice as big in capacity as the HDD in my tower PC, so I immediately throught - backup. It didnt come with any back-up soft ware though, which I think is a glaring omission. No matter, I thought, I will back up my photos (10,000+), music (14,000 tracks), etc into folders I create myself. Connection simply means attaching the power cable to a free socket...

Review of Freecom Classic Hard drive 250 GB

Freecom 400GB external USB Hard drive

Advantages: Fast, high capacity storage. Well built, looks good. 2 year warranty, No fan.
Disadvantages: No fan.

...Freecom before as they've always looked a bit cheap and nasty so this would be an interesting experience. The box did feel reassuringly heavy though, a good start. ############### # What's in the Box? ############### Apart from the drive, the box contained a small light external PSU, a USB lead and a CD with some backup software. The case is made of extremly solid and heavy aluminium with a silver plastic front piece with a sexy blue '400GB' light (yes, you can have sexy lights. Really.) at the front just to prove how big it was. The finish is excellent and I have to say, if this is anything to go by, I'm converted to Freecom. Unlike the picture here, my unit has the aluminium finished in matt black which looks really nice on top of my black PC. It's also surprisingly compact - not that much bigger than a hard drive at 20x11.5x4 cms...

Freecome DVD RW Recorder USB 2.0

Advantages: ummmmm
Disadvantages: Doesn't work very well, slow, intermitently recognises disks, poor back up service, need I go on?

...I ordered my Freecom DVD Recorder LS USB 2.0 after my CD/DVD drive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task that previously took about 30 minutes, this recorder produced a disc that no dvd player in my home recognised (and I have 4). I found the user interface very unfriendly and it simply didn't work. Needles to say, I'll be getting a refund!...

...I have previously purchased a Freecom 500 GB external drive drive and have been very happy with it's performance and reliability. So when the drive started to become 80% full it was time to look for some additional storage. I saw the new Freecom 1TB drive on Amazon and given my previous good experiences purchased one straight away. It arrived this morning (Tuesday) having ordered in the previous Friday, and all of this post free. For anyone that hasn't bought a Freecom external hard drive before, you get a very stylish drive unit, power adapter, leads and installation disk. Excellent Multimedia Keyboard

Advantages: Ability to quickly switch between programs
Disadvantages: none

.... - then along the top are shortcuts to MyDocs,MyPics,MyMusic,media player, mail, webhome, messenger. As well as a mute button and what I call video player keys (stop, play, advance etc) - there are three other useful little shortcuts above the number pad for calculator, log off and sleep mode. Bad Points? The only one I can think of, and it's just a matter of personal preference, is the position of the end/home/pageup/down keys. It's a slightly different configuration to what I've used for years and I keep hitting the wrong key. Of course it's also slightly wider than basic keyboards so it may not be suitable for you if space is a consideration. So, if you use multimedia/email a lot, this keyboard's the one for you, it's comfortable to use, easy to install and is in the cheap-medium price range....
