Mediaplayer 35-Kit
Review of Freecom Technologies Digital multimedia receiver by
salsacolin
Advantages: Small, Silent, Mobile, Cheap
Disadvantages: Still some bugs
...Freecom Mediaplayer 35-Kit
The basic kit comes without a hard drive, this is great as its much cheaper to buy the hard drive you want and install it yourself, this is child's play and the instructions (if you need them) are easy to follow.
I have now had the media player for about three months and originally purchased it for £100 + £84 for a 300GB IDE drive, the price of the player has dropped to less than £85 and I'm sure the hard drives will drop / increase in size in the near future.
In essence this is both a USB hard drive which you can take anywhere with your computer for extended storage (if you have a HDD installed), when connected to a TV it becomes a Media Player capable of playing music, movies or displaying your photos.
Connect it to a network via a standard CAT 5 cable (RJ45) via a hub or into a PC and you can stream all...

Great Value Network Storage
Review of Netgear SC101 Storage Central by
tetsuocloud
Advantages: Flexibility, Smartsync Software
Disadvantages: Simultaneous access to Mac and PC
...Not sure whether i was going for a Freecom NAS Hardrive or one of these, so read up a bit and ended up going for the more flexible approach that is the Netgear SC101.
It certainly didn't let me down. I plonked a 25gb seagate hardrive into it and ran the software on my laptop. plugged in the netgear sc101 into my wireless router and within 5mins my laptop had found the 250gb hardrive wireless and was now formatting.
The installation was certainly straight forward. Couple of things worth noting i didn't get the full 250gb from the drive infact i only got 232gb. No sweat i happy with 232gb.
You can assign an admin password so you don;t get anyone messing with your data and there is also an option of partitioning the drive and mapping the drives to as many drive letters as you wish.
It also comes with the smart sync software which...

A great little unit!
Review of Freecom FM 10 Pro - USB flash drive - 512 MB by
richard_richard
Advantages: Compact, fast, good memory capacity
Disadvantages: A little bit fragile...
...Freecom FM10 Pro
The Freecom FM10 pro is a flash memory stick for use with PCs. The stick should work with any PC that has a USB drive and uses a version of windows that supports USB access.
In my work I often have to transfer data from computer to computer and often these are not on the same network. In the past I have had to either use floppy disk or CD-R. Both of these options aren’t ideal, as a floppy cannot contain much data and a CD-R cannot be re-written and takes time to burn the data onto it.
When I heard about the USB flash memory drives I was very interested to purchase one as I thought it would be a much better option for me.
After shopping around the various makes and models, I came across this Freecom FM10 memory stick which I thought offered good capacity for a competitive price. This unit will cost you around £40...

Typical Male!! Smaller than it Say's it is.
Review of Freecom Classic SL Network Drive by
scarfaceman
Advantages: Easy to install, does what it's meant to
Disadvantages: Exaggerates size
...It is official - Hard Drive's are Male!
Having purchased a Laptop with only 60Gb (55.8Gb) of Hard Disk Space, I knew that i would need to purchase an External Hard Drive. After careful consideration and a check on my finances i eventually decided that an extra 250Gb would be more than enough to cater for my needs, and wallet!
I went down to my local computer retailer and purchased the Freecom Classic SL Network Drive. I paid about £110 for it, although i can see now that the price has dropped since then.
#The Look - Well this is a sleek design, although not as space-age as some I've seen, but is more than trendy enough for what i like. The nice thing about this is that it is flat and will easily stack, if several are needed.
#Installation - Well this is a Plug n Play device and was compatible with my operating system (OS) (Windows XP...

Amazing networking kit
Review of Freecom FSG-3 Storage Gateway by
weavern
Advantages: All in one unit, compact
Disadvantages: Can get noisey when hot
...tempting feature. As it says, is to obviously host your own website, on the HDD. You will of course have to regester a domain name, but you can pick up tose cheaply now-a-days.
Mail Server - easy to set up mail server means you can set up office e-mailing systems. Again a feature i don't use as I don't need it.
VPN - Make a 'virtual' network over the internet
Port fowarding - for when you have download clients like Azureus, which needs to have ports opened, you can set access to a specific PC in the network.
Shared Folders - Set up certain folders on the HDD for everyone on the network to share files in, ie. music, movies, setup files
Print Server - connect a USB printer to one of the four USB ports and you can share printers on the network. No need to transfer files inbetween PC's to print. You can even connect USB flash drives and card...

OK, So It's Only A Black Box! Well I Like It!
Review of Freecom Classic SL 80 GB by
BNibbles
Advantages: Requires no real installation to speak of. Peace of mind. Currently very good VFM
Disadvantages: Needs its own mains socket
...a specific question'.
To be honest, this didn't affect me too much, as the feature would have merely been a 'nice to have'. (UPDATE: Subsequent to writing this, I have now acquired another box, sourced from Maplin which is network-compatible, although for £39 I have to put my own drive in it, thus honour is satisfied and I've still got my Freecom to wander to other people's PCs)
SO WHAT DO I USE IT FOR?
Well, apart from 'My Documents' et al, I also store the latest versions of free anti-virus software, drivers, and other useful downloads that may help me fix someone's errant PC, especially if the nature of the fault prevents them from accessing the internet. One of the most common phenomena is the 'I've had it exactly 6 months to the day, and now it doesn't work' syndrome. This is frequently down to their free subscription to an anti...

Very nice but room for improvement
Review of Freecom FSG-3 Storage Gateway by
orrin31
Advantages: Easy to use, lots of features
Disadvantages: Noisy fan, problems with connecting to other routers
...I've wanted a Network Area Storage device for a while but the prices seemed a little steep. I wanted one that could be expanded with USB ports to add my external hard disk, and perhaps a print server. Even the simplest ones seemed expensive.
Recently, just by chance, I found the Freecom FSG-3 Storage Gateway. It not only had a 400 GB capacity and have 4 USB2 ports, but it could also manage printers (a print server) - fantastic!
There was a wireless version available too but since I already had wireless router I decided against it.
I colleague at work mentioned he had the exact one I was looking to buy. After a long discussion I decided to buy one from Amazon. Three short days later, it arrived!
I plugged it in and connected my two desktop PCs and everything worked fine, no problems. Then I tried plugging my ADLS wireless router into it...

DOES NOT work with an Mac iBook!
Review of Freecom ToughDrive Pro Hard drive 160 GB by
efredric
Advantages: seemed sturdy and well-liked
Disadvantages: actually stopped working within a month of purchase date
...I purchased this "Toughdrive" to store my ever-growing digital music collection. It would work sporadically, often turning itself off. I emailed Freecom, who informed me it was a power related issue (they send you a free power adapter if you live in the UK). One marketed feature of the Freecom Toughdrive is that it derives its power from the USB port, and hence doesn't require any extra plugs. As a consequence, they are not sold with the necessary component to operate properly with low-powered notebooks. By this point, my Mac iBook wouldn't even detect that it was plugged in to the USB port. I got my power adapter, (which I had to buy from another company because I li | | |
