Freeview - The clue is in the name!

Advantages: Lots of choice, up to date TV guide & text services.
Disadvantages: Have to buy a box of course!

...When a friend of mine decided to upgrade to Sky + with HD I inherited his Freeview box for free. It was around £29.99 brand new about 3-4 years ago from Tesco. Freeview is very simple to set up, you just connect it to your TV by a scart lead & then plug your TV aerial in to the back of the box. You can then do a scan and it will pick up all channels in your area. If you do not have the best signal you can use a signal booster or a signal amplifier to enhance your signal but please note that this will not work if you are not in a Freeview receiving area. I will not bore you with channel lists etc, if you want to see what channels are available as well as see if your postcode is a Freeview enabled area then please visit www.freeview.co.uk The website is very informative and I have used the Freeview box in 4 or 5 seperate locations...

First off all, you get Interactive TV without have to pay a single subscription fee. The interactive feature is very useful as you can check, for example: What is on TV (now, next or later on) The results of your football or rugby team. Long time Freeview

Advantages: Anamorphic Widescreen, no fee, good range of devices, not proprietry, good colour performance, 7 Day Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).
Disadvantages: Poor bit rates and resolution on some channels, often need new aerials

My credentials -------------------- Seven & a half years at time of writing using and recommending digital terrestrial equipement, I have a Sony IDTV, a Pace DTVA and a Pace Twin PVR, I also have used various other boxes. Can I get it? ---------------- Ignore the postcode checker on the Freeview web site, it is inaccurate and pessemistic, a better predictor is at www.wolfbane.com, the easiest way of telling is if you know what transmitter you are on is to see if the transmitter is a digital one, it is odds on that if your current transmitter broadcasts DVB-T that you will be able to receive Freeview with possibly a different aerial and down lead. I was on the Ondigital checker but not the Freeview one despite a stronger signal. How can I improve reception...

Daewoo Freeview Box

Advantages: Great value for money

...As someone who lives a busy life i feel that paying a monthly fee for Sky, NTL etc is not worth my while as i watch very little TV. As a result i decided a one of payment for Freeview to be my best option. I bought my Daewoo freeview box in Tesco's for £49.95 about a year and a half ago now and have been very happy with my purchase. The box was incredibly easy to set up, via connection through a scart cable. Within ten minutes of opening the packaging my freeview box was up and running after following the on-screen instructions. The selection of channels on the freeview service is enough for my needs. Amongst others you get BBC3 & 4, ITV2 & 3, three 24 hour news channels, 2 childrens channels, 2 music channels, several shopping channels and almost every radio station possible. ...At last we now have the house completely conquered by Freeview. The 4 and a bit TV channels have now gone 30+ channels overnight with no more fuzzy vision. Freeview is a giant step in the right direction for all us telly addicts (news buffs), it now allows us to access endless amount of channels from the use of our existing outdoor/indoor ariel, various stations you can pick up whilst using a freeview box are 2 News channels (sky news,BBC 24) , 2 pop ,4 qvc's, 2 kids, 1 film (film 4), ITV 2.3.4 , BBC 3.4, History,E4. More 4 and 3 US channels to name a few also you will have many radio stations to choose from that you also can hear from your exsiting TV set.
