If you thought a bigger budget and an A-list producer (Michael Bay) would go to Jason's head, well, forget it. The indestructible villain of so many bottom-of-the-barrel shockers isn't about to change his shtick, and the 2009 Friday the 13th proves it. This, the umpteenth sequel (nope, it's not a remake of the origin story) to the original 1980 movie, gives us a clever prologue that manages to fit an entire Jason Voorhees killing spree in a brisk and bloody 20 minutes. Jumping ahead six weeks, the film introduces a carload of clueless teens headed for a weekend at a lakeside cabin, plus a lone motorcyclist (Jared Padalecki) in search of his missing sister (Amanda Righetti). When the "lakeside" happens to refer to Crystal Lake, of course, there can be only one outcome. Cue the hockey mask, and pass the machete. Bay and director Marcus Nispel, who collaborated on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, are surprisingly indifferent to changing up the formula this time, although there's more care taken in building up a few characters, and for once the comic relief (mostly supplied by Aaron Yoo and Arlen Escarpeta) is pretty funny. You might even regret the slaughter of a couple of these young folk, which is an unusual feeling in Friday-watching. The film's Jason is quite the athletic fellow, and he's assembled an elaborate underground corpse-hiding lair in the vicinity of Crystal Lake. How he's been able to live down there for 30 years (if the film's own timeline is to be believed) and had enough unwitting campers pass by to keep himself entertained is anybody's guess. If you thought a bigger budget and an A-list producer (Michael Bay) would go to Jason's head, well, forget it. No matter how many sequels they've made or how big a hit it was in 1980, it's difficult to view the first Friday the 13th as anything but a quickie designed to cram in as many elements from horror movies that had been hits in the late 1970s--most obviously, Halloween and Carrie--while adding as little as possible to the formula. Director Sean S Cunningham has an archetypal plot at his disposal as a group of attractive, shallow teenagers out in the woods to reopen a once-cursed summer camp are murdered in manners designed to show off Tom Savini's gore effects. Kevin Bacon, killed early (arrow through the throat), is the only player who went on to have a career, and he hardly stands out from the strip-Monopoly-playing, goon-acting meat-on-the-hoof teens who fall prey to the mostly unseen murderer. That it's not a total write-off is down to a few neatly edited bits of classical suspense and, two decades on, a simmering nostalgia for a world of bouffant-haired bubbleheads in short shorts (and that's just the guys) observed by edgy subjective camera as the music hisses "kill kill kill". On the DVD: Friday the 13th may be the least worthy of all horror "classics", but it's still nice to have an edition that (unlike earlier video releases) offers a 16x9-enhanced 1.85:1 restored image and a healthy dose of extras. The hard-sell trailer gives away most of the big scares, and so should be sampled after the film. The making of the movie is covered by a 20-minute "Return to Crystal Lake" featurette and a commentary track with input from many of the creatives (Cunningham, composer Harry Manfredini, stars Adrienne King and Betsy Palmer, writer Victor Miller). Amateur butcher and enthusiastic hockey fan Jason Vorhees is back in business, and business is good. Can a plucky young boy stop the madness before Camp Crystal Lake's population report takes yet another machete-aided dip? The stalk-and-slash formula was pretty narcoleptic by this point, but this otherwise humdrum entry is distinguished by some unusual casting choices (Crispin Glover as a stud in training? Corey Feldman as a genius?) and the splattery return of makeup master Tom Savini. The fact that this installment was titled The Final Chapter may seem to contradict the existence of the numerous sequels that followed, but it's not as if logic was ever this series' strong point to begin with. --Andrew Wright ... less

...wretched ?Friday the 13th? on existence on this planet has been screwed into our brains for so long that he has become a horror icon, not something we wish to connect with or make sense out of. The whole film was a colossal mistake to begin with, and focusing on all the wrong features makes this even worse.
Much like its characters, there is very little common sense in the film?s overall narrative. There is a wholly unnecessary sex scene that goes on for far too long and the random kills that occur add nothing of quality to the film. The violence can never be used as a shock factor nowadays and it?s a shame to see that absolutely no effort was made to add any sort of unique or fresh spins on the well-worn genre of horror. Jason returns and sets up his base in Camp Crystal an abandoned holiday park which happens to be in the middle of no where with the nearest place being a small town which is a good twenty-minute drive away. But a group of young irresponsibly rich adults decide to spend the weekend there in what they hope will be a weekend they will never forget and if Jason gets his way they wont remember anything after he has finished with them.

Friday the 13th is relaunched but its business as usual.
Advantages: Faithful to the original
Disadvantages: Not that scary
...A group of teenagers got for a camping trip near Crystal Lake, only to be horribly slaughtered by a giant of a man. A few weeks later, searching for his missing sister, Clay heads up to the eerie woods. Against the advice of police and cautions from the locals, Clay pursues what few leads he has, with the help of a young woman he meets among a group of college kids up for an all-thrills weekend. Soon they learn the truth - Jason Voorhees is no campfire tale, he's real and he's angry!
Jason's back, killing anyone unwise enough to visit Camp Crystal Lake, and it's like he's never been away. I quite pleased to report that the relaunch of the franchise is not a reboot, nor a reimagining. In fact what we have here for all intents and purposes is ?Friday the 13th Part XI?. The series has never worried too much about continuity. For a start...
