...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) ...I have been a fan of Danny Wallace for quite a while now - ever since I read his collaboration with Dave Gorman on the book 'Are You Dave Gorman?' Since then Danny has gone on to write a number of books of his own, all based on mad boyish escapades which manage to take him to far flung places and sometimes land him in a bit of bother! His latest book that I have read - Friends like These - is written in the same vein, although it does have some quite thought provoking and poignant moments too. As he writes this book, Danny is fast approaching his thirtieth birthday which seems to be causing him a bit of a crisis. Although he is happily married to Lizzie, they own their own home and he has an interesting career; there is something about this milestone that causes him a lot of angst. It seems that at least one friend has a grudge to bear but the problem is that Maggie has no idea who she might have upset and for what reason. If she does not find out who's after her though she knows that she will be in great danger. Things started to go wrong for Maggie when she was involved in a fatal coach accident. Many people died but Maggie was one of the lucky ones. However, the crash affected her memory meaning she only has flimsy recollections of what happened before the accident. ...'You can be my Friend' is a delightful picture story book aimed at young children and starring most children's favourites - Charlie and Lola. This book is based on one of the episodes of the Charlie and Lola series which is shown on Cbeebies, and although it says on the front that it is based on the characters created by Lauren Child, it is not actually written by her. The text is in fact based on the script of the TV programme. This does not matter at all though, as the book is absolutely delightful in every way. For anyone who does not know, Charlie and Lola are brother and sister. Charlie is the older more sensible brother whereas Lola is the younger, more quizzical and sometimes a little bit naughty younger sister.
