Clearly, most of the ingredients of British crime drama Scott And Bailey have been seen before. In this instance, it centers around the two characters of the title, both of whom are detectives in the Major Incident Team. Both of them have impossible workloads, and many challenges in their personal lives, and both have some tough crimes to solve. So what makes Scott And Bailey stand out? Well, its key assets are its two lead stars. The title roles are taken by Lesley Sharpe and Suranne Jones, and they prove to be an interesting and complicated double act. Theyre friends, but not without issues, and the first two seasons of the show that are gathered together here present them with some horrifying crimes and choices. Its a bit uneven at times. The writing is generally very strong, but then Scott And Bailey has moments where it lets its intelligence levels drop. Fortunately, as the series goes on, these instances become fewer, and as the show hits its stride, it becomes really quite compelling drama. Scott And Bailey has some way to go before it can carve itself a place on the proverbial honours board of excellent crime dramas, but its a good to very good piece of television, and this boxset is an excellent way to curl up in front of the television for a good few nights of some strong, interesting entertainment. --Jon Foster ... less

Captain Scarlet - Complete Series Box Set [DVD] [1967]

First broadcast in 1967, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons was the most grown-up of all Gerry Anderson's SuperMarionation adventures. There are gadgets and toy-friendly machines galore, of course--like the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle, the Angel Aircraft and Cloudbase itself--but, unlike the colourful fantasies of Stingray and Thunderbirds, this series' concern with an implacable, vengeful enemy, conspiracies and double-agents drew its inspiration from James Bond and the Cold War spy dramas of the 1960s. Special effects whiz Derek Meddings imbues the action sequences with a truly Bondian grandeur and, like the sinister Spectre of the Bond films, the Martian Mysterons seem all the more hostile for their unseen presence, their agents infiltrating every organisation dedicated to their destruction just as it seemed the Soviets were doing at the time. The indestructible Captain Scarlet is killed then resurrected every week (though not like South Park's Kenny), and more often than not the unstoppable Mysterons emerge triumphant, and always undefeated. The varied cast of Spectrum agents and their voice characterisations also aim at verisimilitude (Captain Scarlet, voiced by Francis Matt hews, sounds like a grim Cary Grant), while the puppetry is more realistic than ever. This box set contains all 32 episodes, with newly remastered picture and Dolby 5.1 surround sound. The DVD box also includes extra features on each disc, plus a sixth documentary disc, "Captain Scarlet: S.I.G.". In its new digital incarnation, Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons still looks and sounds like the epitome of 60s cool. --Mark Walker ... less

Torchwood: Complete BBC Series 1 Box Set [2006] [DVD]

While occasionally clumsy in the way it goes about things, the first season of Torchwood ultimately makes good on its promise to be a science fiction programme for an older market. So while its spun out from the more family-friendly Doctor Who, it does carve out an edgy, entertaining niche for itself. The programme follows the adventures of the Torchwood agency (who we met in far more prestigious form at the end of Doctor Whos second series), a small team led by John Barrowmans Captain Jack Harkness who investigate the extra terrestrial and the paranormal. And across the thirteen episodes of this maiden season, they have a lot to look into, from the likes of a sex-craved alien and cyberwoman, through to cannibalistic foes and strange, spooky fairies. Admittedly, particularly in the early stages when Torchwood is finding its feet, there are a few missteps, and a little too much side-indulgence in exploring material that the more mainstream Doctor Who wouldnt allow. But itd be to your folly to write Torchwood off: by the time it gallops into the second half of this first season, the quality is strong, the storylines are interesting, and the show proves to be a real winner. Intertwining with the narrative of the main Doctor Who show, Torchwood nonetheless then works as an independent programme in its own right, replete with a strong cast of characters (led by the terrific Barrowman) and scripts that have more of an experimental edge to them. Its certainly one of the most interesting science fiction shows Britain has produced in the last decade or two, and theres much to enjoy again and again in this box set. --Jon Foster ... less

Entourage: Complete HBO Seasons 1&2 Box Set [DVD]

Entourage is everything viewers have come to expect from an HBO series: smart, hilarious, and highly addictive, especially when taken in full-season, DVD form. As implied in the title, the show follows Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), a rising Hollywood star with bedroom eyes and an over-active libido, along with his three childhood companions-turned-hangers-on. Kevin Dillon plays Johnny Drama, Vincent's less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother (he is Matt Dillon's less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother in real life). Jerry Ferrara plays Turtle, the weasel, and Kevin Connolly appears as Eric, the Everyman hero who hopes to parlay his friendship with Vincent (plus two years of community college) into a career in talent management. Along the way Eric contends with the predictable self-doubt, romantic indecision, etc. The cast is rounded out by Jeremy Piven (Doug Hughley from Singles) as a foul-mouthed agent reminiscent of Jay Mohr's short-lived Peter Dragon character. Finally, it's produced by Marky Mark himself--and you've got to believe that guy knows something about the star-entourage relationship. If possible, watch with a friend so you'll have someone to quote lines back to later. --Leah Weathersby The most clever thing producers did with the second season of Entourage, HBO's hip and hilariously accurate depiction of Hollywood, was to take the boys out of Hollywood. Sending star-on-the-rise Vincent Chase and his boys from Queens into places like Sundance and ComiCon created a whole new treasure trove of inside jokes, and for that we thank them. The usual clutter of celeb cameos abound (Hugh Hefner, Pauly Shore, Ralph Macchio,), but one main story arc takes up the entire season: Vincent's casting in Aquaman, the big-budget movie he didn't want to star in, and then had to vie against Leonardo DiCaprio to get. Mandy Moore turns up as the only girl who ever broke Vince's heart (on the set of A Walk to Remember, allegedly) and now re-enters his life as his Aquagirl, while James Cameron makes a few appearances as director of the superhero project. In the meantime, Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) goes from moocher to music manager, Eric (Kevin Connolly) gets courted to be a big-time agent, and Johnny "Drama" (Kevin Dillon, ever the punchline) ponders calf implants and gets fired from a "Movie of the Week" with Brooke Shields. The biggest turn of events, however, happens to Vince's slick agent Ari Gold (an Emmy-worthy Jeremy Piven), who pulls a "Jerry Maguire" by the end of the season. Ari's ability to switch sides on a dime -- that is, to choke up at his daughter's batmitzvah, then manipulate the family moment into a publicity stunt to lure his client away from a rival, continues to make Piven the firecracker of the bunch. Grenier is slightly less vacuous than last season, but still has the least interesting personality (which could be the point of the show--that it takes a village to make any Joe Actor into a movie star). One interesting extra on the DVD: Executive Producer Mark Wahlberg, on whom the show is based, interviews the cast and producers. The banter is interesting enough, but Wahlberg makes such a dull interviewer it's certain we won't see a talk-show host career in Vince's future. --Ellen A. Kim ... less

This handsome box set includes all the episodes from Series One--from our favourite coffee-drinking sextet's initial meeting in the pilot right up to the series cliff-hanger "The One Where Rachel Finds Out"--that Ross is in love with her, that is. Other highlights include: "The One With the Butt", in which Joey gets a big break as Al Pacino's stunt bottom; "The One With the Monkey" in which Ross acquires Marcel, his pet monkey; and the two-parter (imaginatively called "The One with the Two Parts") in which Joey starts dating Ursula, Phoebe's twin sister and Monica and Rachel double-date cute doctors played by George Clooney and Noah Wyle from ER. --Leslie Felperin ... less

Classic Encounters (Box Set) [DVD]

Five classic drama movies from the 1950s. Anastasia (1956) is Anatole Litvak's screen adaptation of the popular play written by Marcelle Maurette. Bergman stars as an amnesiac in Paris during the early 1920s who is picked up by an exiled White Russian General (Yul Brynner) and encouraged to pose as the long-lost daughter, Anastasia, of the murdered Czar Nicholas of Russia. If she successfully passes as Anastasia, the General and his co-horts stand to gain the £10 million that has been held in trust at the Bank of England. However, they have to convince the only surviving member of the Romanov family, the Grand Duchess (Helen Hayes) before they can get their hands on the money. Love is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955) is set in Hong Kong during the Korean War. A Eurasian female doctor (Jennifer Jones) and an American journalist (William Holden) fall in love. However, their love does not run a smooth course as he is already married and her family and friends do not approve. In Three Coins in a Fountain (1954), three American women in Rome fall for the myth that if you throw a coin into the Fountain of Trevi your wishes will be granted. Naturally, they all wish to be swept off their feet by Italian men, and the film chronicles their rocky road to romance. The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958) is the true story of an English missionary who led a hundred children over enemy territory in pre-WWII China. Robert Donat plays a Chinese mandarin in his final screen performance and North Wales stands in for the Chinese countryside. An Affair To Remember (1957) stars Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr as a playboy and a nightclub singer who embark on a shipboard romance and eventually fall completely in love with each other. They decide to make a pact that when they arrive to their separate homes, they will end their respective relationships, and rendezvous in six months' time at the top of the Empire State Building. The course of true love, however, never does run smoothly. ... less

Friends - Season 1-10 Complete Collection (15th Anniversary) [DVD]

A US sitcom behemoth with a global brand, Friends shot out of the gate in 1994 with snappy writing and an attractive cast. The exploits of sensitive paleontologist Ross Geller (David Schwimmer), his obsessive-compulsive sister Monica Geller (Courteney Cox); Monica's roommate Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), a spoiled rich girl trying to live on her own; earthy aromatherapist/masseuse Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow); and Monica's neighbours across the hall -- sarcastic Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and his struggling actor roommate Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) became a nationwide obsession, a pop-culture icon (remember "The Rachel" haircut?) and a ratings hit for its entire run. The first two seasons were mostly centered on the on-off saga of Ross and Rachel, and while their relationship remained a strong presence through romantic rivals and even a baby, the other characters eventually moved from sideshow players into a shared comedic lead. But Friends was not without its heart. Most of the cast had dysfunctional relationships with their parents and went through loss, divorce, marriage, parenthood, and love triangles. The emotional pregnancies of Rachel (by Ross) and Phoebe (surrogate to her half-brother's triplets) won the actresses Emmy Awards, and Joey's tender feelings for Rachel in Season 8 won LeBlanc, the most improved actor in the series, a nomination. Most sitcoms run out of ideas by the fifth season, but Friends gave itself a refreshing jolt the minute Monica and Chandler wound up in bed together. Their budding romance was not only the one of the funniest arcs of the series, but one of the most sentimental, as they planned a wedding, struggled to have a child and eventually turned to adoption. By seasons seven and onwards, the characters had each "grown up" from young singletons to thirtysomethings finding permanence in their careers and love lives but never losing the laughs. Friends featured a parade of celebrity guests, but utilised most of the stars as more than mere cameos: The sextet's parents were all brilliantly cast, particularly Kathleen Turner as Chandler's drag-queen father and Teri Garr as Phoebe's dizzy mom. Everyone from George Clooney to Sean Penn to Julia Roberts to Bruce Willis has appeared on the sitcom, and Tom Selleck certainly enjoyed a career resuscitation after his recurring role as Monica's older man. But no star power ever penetrated the bond between the six stars and their unmatchable chemistry worked for ten seasons. Even though the show is probably repeated somewhere in the world every day, this boxed set of Friends remains watchable over and over again -- even if that theme song eventually grates on your nerves! --Sally Giles ... less

One DVD box-set, CAN make a Difference!
Advantages: Every episode including Pilot Movie and Follow up Movie, all in DVD splendour! Great Box Design!
Disadvantages: Strange ordering of the episodes. Could have more DVD extra's
..., and normally disastrous, re-boot and big screen treatment, but for me there is nothing like the original. Knight Rider was a show I grew up with and followed it religiously, and I admit I'm still a fan today. In 2006, the complete set of episodes was released in the form of a rather outstanding DVD box-set. Here are my thoughts on this classic fantasy drama/crime show presented in this ultimate DVD...
