London to Brussels

Advantages: More economic than the boat/plane
Disadvantages: Expensive.

...***INTRO*** I live near Kings Cross-station the site for the international Eurostar terminal, succeeding Waterloo station its temporary site. So I decided to write a piece concerning the project and its service. There are 3 main operations: 1. Eurotunnel who are the operators who control the trains. 2. Le Shuttle the name of the train service between Folkestone & Calais. 3. Eurostar the train service between London & Paris - Brussels. I tried the journey from Waterloo to Brussels and will be able to relate this experience to you. Before then some history and background to help you make your decision as to whether to travel and if yes how to make it more enjoyable. ***THE PRODUCT*** From the introduction you can see the package falls into 3 distinct products. The main stations for the package are Waterloo, Ashford...

A breath of fresh air in south London

Advantages: One of the nicest and most varied in the locality, a nice cafe,
Disadvantages: open to the adjoining golf course in parts (for dog walkers)

...I?ve found that owning a dog needing lots of exercise like my Labrador and having an appetite that could embarrass Homer Simpson is a match made in heaven sometimes. Some of my favourite little cafes and pubs have been found whilst out walking our dog. I have a keen eye for books which describe good walks (not necessarily dog focussed) which feature a pub stop half way around, or a nice café somewhere nearby. That was how I first heard about High Elms Country Park. Not too far from home, but I probably wouldn?t bother travelling there if it weren?t for the opportunity to take my dog somewhere different every so often. Situated in the London Borough of Bromley and by the North Downs, it was originally the country seat of the Lubbock family. It?s now owned by Bromley Council, although it receives some assistance from...

From Dead to Worse

Advantages: Good read
Disadvantages: Lots of threads, can be confusing

...and the explosion at the vampire summit in Rhodes have weakened the supernatural community in Louisiana. A failed attempt of takeover from werewolves in another area results in Alcide becoming the new packleader. This, however, comes with a price which is the death of a few weres in the community including the previous packmaster Patrick, Maria-Star, Alcide?s girlfriend. As for the vampires, the explosion in the vampire summit results in the loss of various main personnel in Queen Sophie?s court and the King of Nevada, Felipe, grabs the opportunity. He and his clan kill of the other sheriffs of Louisiana apart from Eric and his gang. Eric surrenders to the new regime and manages to keep his area. And with Sookie saving the King from the attack of the Sophie?s last surviving child, Eric is slowly gaining the trust of the new King. And as...

South West Trains - London to Exeter line

Advantages: Clean, efficient, friendly staff
Disadvantages: not enough frequency to some stations

...I use the South West Trains service between Salisbury and Tisbury, and Salisbury, Tisbury and London Waterloo frequently. The old diesel trains have been refurbished, and are very comfortable. They are still quite loud, but quite smooth. They are always immaculate, and punctual, and the staff are great. There is always a buffet trolley, which is well stocked and is reasonably priced. The fares are quite good as well, especially if you've got a railcard and you book in advance. The return fare from Tisbury to Salisbury is much cheaper than the bus. The only problem is frequency of the trains stopping at Tisbury, as they only stop once an hour, which can be frustrating. However, trains running every half hour to London from Salisbury is great, as it means that you never have to wait too long....

From the North, to the South...

Advantages: A noble and comparatively straightforward peak
Disadvantages: Clear weather desirable

...encouraging goings rather than comings. Two ranges of mountains form the foundations of the interior. To the south are the Bluestacks: rough limestone hills strewn to the north of Donegal town itself, secretive and not much visited. More overt are the Derryveaghs: stern granite and quartzite mountains rising from ravenous bogs in the grand Irish style. Errigal dominates the Derryveagh Mountains and the Glenveagh National Park, asserting its superiority both by means of altitude (it's comfortably higher than everything else) and in form. Many mountains are dramatic and overpowering, but few can honestly claim to be beautiful: Errigal, with its steep sides shrouded in quartzite screes tapering to a narrow summit ridge, is one of the few. Particularly when seen end-on (from the south east but especially from the north-west, where it rises...

London From Above

Advantages: Excellent views of London, well priced
Disadvantages: The lines for queing can be long

...The British Airways London Eye is the tallest structure in London and looks just like a large Ferris Wheel. It is called the British Airways London Eye because British Airways have sponsored this attraction since 1996. Getting There The London Eye is situated pretty much in the middle of London on the South Bank of the River Thames. The London Eye is actually about a 3 minute walk from Westminster tube station and Waterloo main station so I would say this attraction is extremely easy to get to whatever your mode of transport. Getting Tickets There are several ways in which to get tickets. You can buy them online, and collect them from the ticket office, or you can book them on the day at the ticket office. You can also book through the automated 24 hour booking line. The ticket office is located inside the County Hall and to...

From here to the end of a book with no plot

Advantages: Some endearing moments
Disadvantages: No real story and one dimensional characters

...Synopsis After many years of trying to conceive, Emma and James Hamilton have just been given the go-ahead to adopt a ten month old boy from Russia. Then Emma finds out she is pregnant. This book follows their journey from collecting their son, Yuri, from a Russian orphanage to welcoming their other new baby into their lives. Being a new mum myself, I was expecting to really enjoy this book yet instead I found it average but endearingly so. There are two other main stories in the book. The first involves Emma?s best friend Lucy and her broody new husband Donal. The second revolves around Emma?s sister Babs whose attempts to make it as a TV presenter in London provide a more light-hearted side to the book. There?s not much more to say about the plot really because there isn?t really that much of a story to this book. None...

London To Brighton DVD

Advantages: VERY IMPRESSIVE FILM
Disadvantages: NONE

...'s lives are hard and hopeless and they grift as best they can to get by. The gloom extends to the locations too, from the grey and empty streets of London to the cold and desolate Brighton beach. And yet despite the despair and the lengths that street worker Kelly (played quite brilliantly by Lorraine Stanley) has to go to to simply survive, she discovers a streak of maternal compassion and morality when she takes the lost 12 year-old Joanne (a stunning debut by Georgia Groome) under her wing as the girls go on the run from some very bad men. The cast is uniformly excellent but particularly the two female leads and the vicious thug Derek who is played with such clinical and chilling effiiciency by Johnny Harris. This truly impressive first feature film, announces a major talent in Paul Williams, both as director and writer. His...

From London to Kenilworth

Advantages: Easy to read tale of Lord Robert Dudley, "friend" to Elizabeth I, mostly based on fact.
Disadvantages: Not as well written as the author's Queen Victoria series.

...*** The Author *** This is the 10th book in Jean Plaidy's Tudor series. There are over 100 historical fiction books written by Eleanor Burford using this pen name. Other pseudonyms she used included Victoria Holt, Elbur Ford, Kathleen Kellow, Ellalice Tate, Anna Percival and Philippa Carr. She used different names for varying styles of novels. *** The Dudley Family Background *** The book opens with the crowds at Tower Hill shouting for the death of extortionists. King Henry VII, whose people thought him a miser that imposed cruel taxes, is dead, and they are hopeful of better times now Henry VIII has succeeded him. The young king has condemned some of those loyal to his father. This includes Edmund Dudley, who from a humble start, rose to become Henry VII's chief advisor. Edmund was the grandfather of the man in...
