Trees Lounge

Advantages: Great acting
Disadvantages: Abit depressing but with lighter parts

...This Steve Buschemi's debut as writer and director. Made in 1996 it is a relatively unknown film but was a critcal if not commercial succes for Buschemi The film is about an alcoholic named Tommy (Steve Bushemi), the film starts and he is trying to wangle one more drink out of the barmaid 15 minutes after 'time'. The barmaid Connie(played by Carol Kane - Hester Street, Taxi) is obviously familiar and serves him with Tommy, which is an interesting tenet to the film as everyone knows everyone in this small suburb and everyone knows Tommy and he seems to recoil from it in shame. The bar 'Trees Lounge' is always populated by Tommy, an elderly alcoholic Bobby and another successful alcoholic Mike (Mark Boone Junior - Batman Begins, Lonesome Jim) Tommy starts to form a friendship with Mike thinks he is a looser. Mike is a strange character...

Pestana Grand Hotel - Funchal, Madeira.

Advantages: Good rooms, helpful staff, free bus into town
Disadvantages: Its a bus ride from town.

...into the capital city Funchal and the harbours. The room was a really good size with decent aircon, a fridge and a nice bathroom. All rooms have a balcony. The cleaning staff did a good job and everyday the room looked as new when we got back from our trips into the island. Breakfast was excellent and you can eat in the restaurant or outside near the pools. The quality and selection of the food was impressive. Breakfast is serve yourself, buffet style but as soon as we sat down we were asked if we wanted tea or coffee and it always arrived quickly. Sparkling wine was also always on ice in case you wanted a bucks fizz with your brekkie. The buffet included a good selection of cereals, muesli, yoghurts and fresh fruit. Hot breakfasts were available including everything you could want for a full english plus more. Eggs were cooked to your...

The Departure Lounge Cafe

Advantages: Lovely rural location, easy to get to, great food and pleasant staff.
Disadvantages: Does not take credit or debit cards and no Stella!

...The Departure Lounge Café THE PLACE WITH THE PLANE **** WHERE IS IT? ******* Basingstoke Road Alton Hampshire GU34 4BH Tel: 01420 80111 Email: pastyfarley@hotmail.com No official website as far as I know yet. Open seven days a week from 10 till 4. Sunday 7.00am - 9.00am Takeaway for Car boot Sale only ***** WHAT IS IT? ***** I found this place completely by chance and how pleased I am to have bothered to stop in the car park. I only came down for the car boot sale and low and behold saw this gorgeous little eatery tucked away in the corner. This little known café has only been opened a year so everything inside is still relatively new and shiny. Situated inside the HILLSIDE NURSERIES car park, it is easy to pass this completely without realising what a little gem Alton has on offer for food...

Curry, but no lounging!

Advantages: Stylish
Disadvantages: We felt rushed, small portions of popadoms and naan

...I found myself in Nottingham at on New Years Eve 2007 and, at the suggestion of a chum who is a big Gordon Ramsay fan, we went to a restaurant that the foul-mouthed chef had worked his magic on in his 'Kitchen Nightmares' TV show - Curry Lounge. I must admit I was a little unsure whether I actually wanted to visit a place that was in enough of a mess that Ramsay had to sort it out, but I assumed that it would probably be fine after he'd finished with it. Besides, it was good enough to win second place in the curry of the year (for Nottingham, I think) beforehand, so it should be pretty good, I thought... THE LOCATION Curry lounge can be found at 110 Upper Parliament Street, 2 or 3 minutes walk from the tram stop in Nottingham town centre. It's worth looking up the location yourself online, or at least make sure that the friend...

Dorisol Mimosa Hotel, Funchal

Advantages: Comfortable, clean hotel with lots of facilities close to Funchal Lido
Disadvantages: A pull uphill to the door - but it is Madeira - everything is uphill!

...Bearing in mind the price of this hotel, we were agreeably surprised by the quality. The room was clean and of a reasonable size with a lovely sea view and overlooking the swimming pool. The staff were friendly, especially the chambermaids! The breakfast was good, with a good selection of food, although being self-service it was a bit of a scramble if you arrived at around 9am, when we all seem to want to eat our breakfasts! The only problem is that the hotel is a sharp pull up from the road (as is most of Madeira) although those with cars or using taxis will have no problem arriving at the door. The walk into Funchal is very manageable by us two 69 year olds but we are fitter than some and enjoy levada walking. The levada near the hotel has 150 steps up to it!...

Pestana Bay Hotel in Funchal, Madeira

Advantages: Informal, clean, decent food, right near the beach
Disadvantages: Hideously expensive bar and wines

...We stayed at the Pestana Bay "Aparthotel" four-star hotel in Funchal (the capital of Madeira) in August 2005 and I'm happy to recommend it to anyone reading this. It was clean, conveniently placed (i.e right near the beach and with a nearby bus stop for trips into town), not too formal or "stiff upper lip" and the breakfasts were pretty good. COSTS: We paid just over £500 each including flights, for a 2-week stay in August, which we thought was pretty good value given that it's not the cheapest of locations. This included buffet breakfast each morning. The bar is expensive and probably best avoided if you need to watch the euros- we paid something like 10 euros for a Southern Comfort and coke, and a small bottle of beer. There are plenty of bars in Funchal where you can get the same drinks for under four euros, so I would advise...

Spice Lounge, Magdalen Street, Norwich

Advantages: Clean, modern, great service
Disadvantages: None

...Situated at the top of Wensum Street and opposite the Maids Head Hotel, the Spice Lounge is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the Prince Of Wales Road and Riverside areas, but close enough to walk for a few drinks post food. The Spice Lounge is the only curry house that I would take someone to on the first date. The whole place ozzes class and style. Unlike other curry houses in Norwich, this is a curry restaurant. Walking down Wensum Street you can't help but notice the neon blue lights screaming 'look at me'. The entrance is spacious, and very modern. As you walk in to the left is a seating area and to the right is the bar. The entrance is large enough for your group to congregate and chat whilst waiting for the stragglers - without getting in the way of other diners. This is the only curry restaurant that I...

Radio One's Live Lounge Volume 4

Advantages: A great selection of singles and covers
Disadvantages: Some people may not 'get' the covers

...The problem with compilation albums is often they can vary from the downright brilliant to the utterly awful. Well here's one for your delectation - Radio One's Live Lounge Volume 4. Being Volume 4 in the series, you may have come across some of the previous editions over the past few years. It consists of two CDs containing live tracks taken from the Radio One Live Lounge, which are often performed during Fearne Cotton's show during the week (previously during Jo Whiley's show for those who remember a good radio show!). During these performances, the artist plays their latest single, and a cover version - often a track from a completely different genre to their own, some of which work brilliantly and some which fall flat and are instantly forgotten. This album combines the best of the cover versions and live performances...

Review of Radio 1's Live Lounge Vol.4 - Various Artists

Long Live the Live Lounge

Advantages: Great sense of fun and music abilty, lacking ego!
Disadvantages: The Automatic and Fiddy!

...Covers have always been a bit of a hit and miss affair. Some people do it well, some people don't. It can be commercial suicide and ruin artists' credibility. The recent trend over the years, pushed particularly by Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley, and other ventures such as Warchild, is that an artist can perform live, or record a cover and still retain their credibility and not come over as a sell-out. Maybe it's just that people have lightened up a little, or maybe it is just because there are things like the Live Lounge, that encourage well-picked songs to do as a cover. Granted that the concept is not a new one, and even Jo would not say that. But, I think the idea of the Live Lounge is maybe new. For the last couple of decades, musicians and music lovers have been concerned about what is cool and what is now. Noone would have dared...

Live Lounge - Simply Brilliant

Advantages: Brilliant Covers, Great Original Versions
Disadvantages: Data Listings on MP3 Players Is Sketchy

...I actually downloaded this rather than buy the CD, but then had the wonderful surprise of The Blonde coming home and depositing it in my lap having just been out shopping. She bought it because I had been wittering on about how much I loved Jo Whiley on Radio One and especially the covers that the artists did on the live lounge. It seems to have got through.... I might have to try that tactic when I want a new suit *grin* Anyhow.... The album covers are actually pretty non-descript. The front shows some guitar cases with plenty of stickers, a couple of Mike stands and a bright red label with Radio One live lounge emblazened upon it. It does a job I suppose. The reverse of the CD has the track listings on, and since it is a double CD, there really isn't that much room for anything else. The tracks involved are as follows...
