...(POEM HAS BEEN REMOVED - please see below) UPDATE - The poem which originally appeared here has been chosen along with 79 other verses to appear in "A Review of Contemporary Poetry", published by Bluechrome / Boho Press in conjunction with the Stroke Assocation to raise funds for the Stroke Association. Eighty poems were plucked out of over a thousand submissions, and consist of entries from published poets, stroke victims and raw new "talent" (a catagory I appear to belong to). Advantages: No adverts, public
Disadvantages: Poor quality of shows, many repeats, unfair licence fee

...I value public television very highly, so I am fundamentally glad that the BBC exists. I have no problem with paying for public broadcasting since that keeps it advert-free, but I just think that (a) the funding should be fairer and (b) that the quality of viewing should be better. The reason the licence fee angers me is that it is the same for everyone, which means that a poor family living under the poverty line year pays the same as a millionaire stockbroker. That really isn't fair, it should be funded by our taxes, that way everyone will pay a fairer share. Now part of our licence fee is used to fund their digital channel, which many of us do not have access to! AND they want to raise the licence fee to fund more development into digital. Advantages: A Worthwhile Cause
Disadvantages: Pity it is necessary

...This fund, set up in memory of Mark Cross of Bexleyheath by his widow, raises money for research into the treatment and cause of primary bone cancer. The Fund is part of University College London Hospitals' Charities, therefore all money raised goes directly into bone sarcoma research, not charity admim. Mark was treated at UCLH's Middx Hospital in London, now UCH, and the Royal National Orthopeadic Hospital, Stanmore. Primary bone cancer is rare but very aggressive, and the treatment requires some of the harsher versions of chemotherapy. It affects approx 400 people per year, mainly children and teenagers, hence it attracts little publicity or money for research. Like other cancers with initially vague, ambiguous symptoms (bad knee anyone?) its rarity virtually guarantees a lack of clinical vigilance which does not help survival... Read review

Advantages: You can make money
Disadvantages: A little bit stressful

...I have been looking at setting up an investment club or trying to raise finance to actively trade myself. An easy thing you might say ! alas tis not, setting up a bank account is easy enough but trying to obtain funds is not easy. I have no CCJ's -defaults or any other such financial burdens but obtaining about twenty grand credit is sometimes impossible through the big banks. A top four clearing bank told me that they declined me because i did not score high enough on their credit scoring system. Worked in the same place for a long while lived in the same house four times longer on the electoral register but please do not darken our doorstep again guv. Anybody know how why whom or what i can obtain funding or grants? i would love to know your opinions. Cheers Spenno... Read review

Jeans for Genes Day is on Friday 3 October 2003 – sorry I have left it a bit late to tell you about it but if you can’t get involved this year it is held about the same time each year. Everyone across the UK is invited to throw out the usual dress rules (within reason!) and jump into their jeans in exchange for just £1. The Human Genome project discovered that a human has around 33,000 genes. This is only twice as many as a roundworm. In fact 55% of your DNA is the same as a banana. ...if you live near liverpool or in range of the radi city borad cast you must listen to it be cause it has most of the best tunes in wirral and also has good compititions and good give aways of cash and it also does some fund raiseing for local charititys. they have all the latest technology in the studio and that should make for reall good listening. i have listend to it for ages and i listen to it at night. ithink if you live where you can get it you should listen to it. it is the best on the wirral.... ...transport, as John Prescott wanted at the election, then there would still be the problem of how to fund the NHS. Also, when are these better public transport schemes coming into action. John Prescott certainly kept his promise of raising fuel prices, but not so good at keeping his promises of spending money on better public transport.... Read review

...Givewater.org is a charity website. There are millions of people in the world living without safe and clean water. In the thirld world a lot of children die daily because of contaminated water. There are many organisations working through out the world to provide safe water to these poor people. Wateraid is one of them and givewater.org is their website to raise funds for this cause. Wateraid is a registered UK charity and you can trust them. The site is nice and simple. It loads very fast and it takes only one minute to participate. The main page is brown in back ground and all the links are visible including faq, about us, contact us and donate. You just have to click on the 'Donate' link once daily and the profit generated form that will be given to the charity. It's very simple and there is nothing else to do. On the website... ...ALOHA FROM HAWAII is the soundtrack CD for the television special Elvis made in January 1973. The show was the first ever music concert broadcast live around the world via satellite, and was watched by an audience of over 1 billion people. The show was a fund-raising benefit to raise money for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund and amazingly the event raised over 3 times the estimate, making $75,000 for the fund. Although this sounds small for an event of this kind in this day and age, in 1973 this was a huge sum, and very surprising. The 25th anniversary CD features the full concert from 14 January 1973, and in addition it features a bonus 5 songs Elvis recorded after the concert, which were added to the US broadcast version of the show. Advantages: Good view and good open days
Disadvantages: Not well advertised!

...The Dover Western Heights is one of the positive places on Dover. It is currently under restoration with fund raising days which double up as open days where you get to see reenactments of Wars and fights. It is also a very nice place to walk around as you can admire the wonderful view of Dover and its ports. The open days are not very well advertised so it is advised that you look online rather than asking people for details. Restoration has already began with stairs being refitted and also buildings being made safe to go in. All of this is put together by nice willing teams of everyday people ranging from prison officers to doctors! THere also is a nature wwalk around the site so it can be very relaxing. It really is a nice day out for all the family!... Read review
