DOD compressor is not a DUD
Review of DOD FX82 by  robm

Advantages: Good sound, absoloute bargain
Disadvantages: dodgy build

...The DOD FX82 is a single stomp box bass compressor. for those of you who do not really know what a compressor does, it cuts the peaks in the volume and boosts the troughs. this gives a more constant sound and can make you bass lines tighter. also the fact that it boosts the low volumes means you can get excellent sustain as the signal of the bass decays, the pedal keeps it at the same volume. the first feature of the pedal is the level knob. this affects the output volums of the pedal. this is just a standard feature of most effect peals. then theres the release control. this is used to control the amount of time the compression holds on for. when a loud note is struck the compressionb kicks in straight away and holds on for a while before it releases. the higher the release is set the longer it holds on for. this is personal... I make my guitar talk, but it only says wah-wah
Review of Boss Wah Pedal PW-10 by  Chopeh

Advantages: Great sounds, lots of features, well built
Disadvantages: Fiddly to use more advanced features.

...I've owned this pedal for about a year, it's my 1st proper wah pedal (my other wah pedal was included on the Korg AX10G Multi-fx). I'm assuming if you're reading this, you know what a Wah pedal is, if not.. Just listen to some Hendrix, Vai or any other guitar greats. The wah pedal is something that will find its wah in to pretty much any guitarist's arsenal, even if it's just for fun. Now, on with the reviewing! BUILD: This thing is solid, it's made of metal and weighs quite a lot, which I think is a good thing, as this pedal will get lots of use, especially on stage so it needs to be quite rugged. The top of the pedal has a staggered rubber grip, which does its job very well. The knobs are little plastic ones, they seem pretty sturdy but if anything's going to break 1st, it's going to be them (Mine is still intact after a year, and I... Read review

Solo with solos.
Review of J Mascis - Camden Underworld gig. by  MonkeyboyUK

Advantages: All the classics and a few newwies.
Disadvantages:

...It's testamant to Dinosaur Jr's far-reaching influence and hardcore fanbase that J Mascis could effectively disappear for three years but still fill a venue on his return. Less a showcase for his new material with The Fog, more a retrospective through his classic Dino tracks, the audience ate it up. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and a few FX pedals, J was more communicative than usual, even going so far as to take requests, and did two encores. Of course, it was always unlikely that J would explore a new drum 'n' bass direction, and the three new songs he did play slotted seamlessly into the set, which is a pretty good indication of how good they are. J will be back for a full-band date in London in December. I, for one, will be sure to check him out.... Read review

Guitarport, be an easy bedroom rockstar
Review of Line 6 Guitarport by  Chopeh

Advantages: Price, PC Recording, Many Tones, Intuitive Software.
Disadvantages: Can't use it on stage! (Well, not easily)

...I've owned the Guitarport for way over a year now, and it still impresses me. Put simply, this is a digital multi-fx pedal that runs through your computer, and its possibilities are pretty much endless. As mentioned in other reviews, the user is able to choose an amplifier (with easily recognisable, but not copyright infringing names), and each one sounds near perfect to me. The you can choose your cab, again each one has it's own unique and accurate tone.. ... and then you can pile on your effects pedals, each highly customisable, edit your mics, set your compression... not forgetting to use the in-built tuner first of course! About a year ago, seeing all the buttons was a bit daunting, I really didn't know anything about amplification, but now I'm a semi-expert (...well, on the computer anyway) Everything is laid out in an easy... Big Mean and Fun
Review of Dunlop Jim Cry Baby by  widgetwhite

Advantages: Classic Sound, Built to last forever
Disadvantages: Expensive, Limited use

...Ok, this is probably the best category i could find for this, but its for an original Dunlop CryBaby wah pedal manfactured by JEN in the '70s (i think) Overall, CryBaby Wahs havent changed much since the originals back in the 60s ie VOX,Dunlop, etc as its one of the simplest, but most effective pedals used sparingly. My poor old pedal has been knocking around in poor condition for what feels like a hundred years since i first started playing guitars 15 years ago! I purchased it from a friend for about 5 quid and a bag of jelly babies, and boy am i glad as new ones now cost around 100 GBP. Im writing this after comparing in a shop between mine and a recent model, just to see if there really was much difference.Surprise? almost none, it felt. The Build quality is still rocksolid, diecast box , big sweepable pedal and a totally... Read review

Set Phasers To EVIL Prog Rock
Review of Danelectro DJ6 Pepperoni Phaser Pedal by  Champ666

Advantages: ---------------------------
Disadvantages: ---------------------------

...that is highly useful on its own, and really great with other effects. Danelectro have kept the design and controls rather basic which is a good thing for beginners, hoverer it is not as sturdy as the Boss pedals in their sturdy Stomp Boxes, which is a pity as it is the only thing that lets this pedal down. Rock out baby
Review of Marshall MG15 DFX by  ashlemacq

Advantages: Price, Quality, features. Line out.
Disadvantages: Poor distortion. Some effects not very good.

...! Features. Ok in short let's run through exactly what's on the amp then we will explore each feature in a bit more detail. Ok left to right as you look at the picture. Line in - volume - the small black switch is to engage/disengage overdrive - Gain - Gain volume - then the EQ, Bass - Contour - Treble - Then the Digital FX, Preset adjustment - fx level, next small black switch is fx engage/disengage. CD In/Line out - Headphone - Power. Line In Easy enough, lead from your instrument is plugged into here. Volume This is the clean volume. It raises and lowers the volume of the amp clean sound. This can be mixed with the digital FX. We will go into those later on. OD (Overdrive) select Pushing this button in will disengage clean mode and put the amp into OD mode. The two knobs that operate under OD mode are Gain and the second volume knob... Read review

Cracking Marshall amp - comes at a price.
Review of Marshall MR VS 65 R by  mainmandan

Advantages: Some good built in effects, great tone, very loud!
Disadvantages: Steep in price, could annoy the neighbours!

...use. However it is nice to have the extra power for gigging purposes. If this is not your scene however it may be wise looking at the Marshall 30dfx for example. The sounds are really versatile thanks to the built in fx - this amp could save you using an fx pedal. The tone is very rich, probably thanks to the valvestate technology. So overall the marshall is good for the sound of it - and definately could be used at small gigs. This is a very heavy amp! definately not the easiest thing to transport around, but then this has the power. To start with the fx can take a bit of fiddling with to get the right effect - but this is easily rectified with plenty of practise! So overall not the most practical of amps but it depend what you are going to use it for. It isnt huge but it isnt exactly portable either! Read review

The Beginning Of Something Special
Review of Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine by  blueblood121

Advantages: Totally Brilliant
Disadvantages: None

...I must admit, I have never heard anything like this in my life. Rage Against The Machine's debut album is a fantastic, pulsating and outspoken collection of songs that will stay with you forever. The band's lead singer, Zak De La Rocha, is half Mexican, half American (there is special name for it) and was always upset about the way the US government or "system" ran things. It is this upbringing that inspires the angry lyrics throughout the album. You know that this is album is going to be a good one right from the very second you start the CD spinning. The opening bass solo in "Bombtrack" is a fantastic example of how brilliantly the band member's can play their instruments. The guitar and bass have a lot of important parts during the album, and Tom Morello uses an FX pedal to form some absolutely awe-inspiring guitar solos. I... Read review

GFX-707: A Reasonable Starter
Review of Zoom GFX-707 by  Lukasz

Advantages: Cheap, simple to use
Disadvantages: Truely horrible distortion

...I received a Zoom GFX-707 for Christmas several years ago, and thought when I first got it that it was the greatest thing ever. I spent days playing with all the different effects (usually creating the most distortion possible) and loved it. But as the years have drawn by and my playing and ear have improved I have come to realise that it really is quite limited. Lets start with the basics. It is a simple multi-FX guitar pedal with a range of pre-set and user definable patches (combinations of basic amp sounds and effects) and the nice addition of an expression pedal that allows you to easily one attribute of the effects. The actual effects provided cover pretty much all the commonly found effects (wah, chorus, flange, delay, etc...) and some less common effects (filters and the like). The unit itself is nicely sized so that it would... Read review
