So why do birds do that.....?

Advantages: brilliant and fascinating
Disadvantages: none

...We always enjoy having birds visit our garden and we entice our little visitors by putting out various bird food, nuts and fat balls on various feeders placed strategically around our garden. It?s lovely when you look out of the window and see a whole array of birds at the feeders and these lovely little creatures are quite fascinating to watch. However, at times they behave in what appears to be quite a strange way and I am often found wondering ?why do they do that?? If you are like me and would like to know more about why birds behave in the ways that they do, then ?The Secret Lives of Birds? is a must have book! This brilliant book is written by Dominic Couzens who is an experienced writer and bird tour leader who contributes regularly to Birdwatching Magazine. His wonderful descriptions of bird behaviour are accompanied by some...

WATCH THE BIRDS FEEDING IN THE GARDEN

Advantages: FEEDS BIRD WHEN FOOD SCARCE
Disadvantages: ?

...Where I do my bird watching is in the garden. We feed the birds in a position where they can be seen from the house either from the kitchen window, or from the conservatory. In fact I can see the feeding area from the computer if I turn my chair around and look out of the french windows and through the conservatory windows to the garden. I also have a good view across the Chiltern hills from the back bedroom (my daughters) she left home ages ago still has her teddies and dolls in it pictures of her favourite pop stars on the wall) anyway in this bedroom we keep a pair of binoculars and my husband will often go there to scan the skies for any interesting birds I have two bird feeders one full of nuts and one with seeds I/ or my husband also scatter food on the floor for the birds that feed on the floor. A bird feeder needs to be...

Feeding the birds in your garden

Advantages: Lots. Just watching the birds feeding.
Disadvantages: It could, but doesn't have to be, expensive.

...I've been feeding birds in my garden for some time now. As I live in a town, I mainly get 3 types of birds. They are sparrows, starlings, and a pair of doves. It is very rare I get anything else. I do get the odd robin in the winter months, and have also seen a greenfinch. Last winter I decided to buy a bird table. These can be expensive, so shop around. I got mine from a second hand shop for £17. It's proven to be a really good buy, and is still as stirdy as it was the day I bought it. It's come in a real treat, and the birds love it! Feeding birds could be expensive. If you go in the big stores and buy bird food/seed, it could work out costly. But there are ways round that. You don't have to spend a fortune. Have a look round markets and carboots (in the summer) and pick up things. There's a little stall in town...

Review of Members Advice on Bird Feeding

Looking after the birds in your garden.

Advantages: Relaxing and educational to watch
Disadvantages: Lots of poo

...Birds The easiest way to encourage birds into the garden is to feed them. This can be done in two ways. Either put food out on feeders or grow plants that will feed the birds, or will support the insects they need. As birds can become dependant on feeders, they must not be allowed to run dry. Neigbours are often happy to refill them during the holiday season. Bird Tables These should be sited in a safe palce, away from cover, where cats could hide, and high enough to prevent cats jumping up on them. They should be situated not too near to the house but close enough to observe through a window, and close to a path to allow access for Winter feeding. Food should also be left on the floor, in hangers, and pushed into crevices. The Menu Sunflower seeds, wild bird food mixes, peanuts, raisons, cheese, berries, mealworms, and breadcrumbs...

Dead Birds

Advantages: creepy, good sound
Disadvantages: slow

...time goes on they come to realise that not all is as it seems in this innocuous looking shelter and they soon begin to think that staying there may not have been a good idea. Dead Birds was recommended to me a little while ago and I decided to rent it out to see what it was like. And whilst its title is misleading I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the film, it is by no means perfect but it is far from being a complete lemon. On one side the film is fairly original in that it is set during the American Civil War, and in that whole setup looked good to me, the uniforms and the war-weary look in the people's faces all went to create a world that seemed believable and convincing, (to me at least). But it also follows standard genre conventions in that we have a creepy house, complete with a large cornfield that is spooky by...

Advantages: Classic Hitchcock - I can say no more !!
Disadvantages: None

...I'm starting this review with a quote from the Master himself, Alfred Hitchcock: "When a new Hitchcock film appears, the public and critics sit back at the start and say to themselves, 'Let's see him scare me.' My job is to get them up on the edge of their seats, and to keep them there. It gets more difficult all the time because one must find new ways to surprise an audience. Any time a viewer of one of my films can say to himself, 'I knew that was coming,' I've lost him." THE BIRDS After his groundbreaking 1960 shocker 'Psyco', Alfred Hitchcock re-emerged three years later with 'The Birds' - a story of a California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, attacks by ordinary birds. 'The Birds' was based on the story of the same name written by Daphne Du Maurier - this was Hitchcock's third...

Hanging Gardens of Wellington

Advantages: Nice stroll, good plants
Disadvantages: Steep

...If you only can spare time to seek out one plant in New Zealand, it would have to be the most famous of all its plants - the silver fern. If, on the other hand, you are a nature lover and you find yourself with a free afternoon to spend in Wellington (New Zealand's capital city), then I strongly recommend the Botanic Garden for its plants, scenic views and pleasant strolls. For everyone else, I'd still recommend it, but only after you have taken your fill of the Te Papa museum (which is my number one "must-see" recommendation for Wellington). The gardens span some 25 hectares and if you are anything like me, they will fill as much time as you have to spare and then some. People with bad knees or small children be warned though - it's pretty steep and you may struggle a bit! There are some mobility scooters available though. I came here...

The Soul Bird

Advantages: Simple, Genuine, Good for kids
Disadvantages: Simple, More for kids

..."Deep down, inside our bodies, lives the soul. No one has ever seen it, but we all know it's there. Not only do we know it's there, we know what's in it, too" My grandfather was a religious correspondent for the BBC, he also wrote many books about religion, but after many years of searching he decided that he was a Quaker. My grandmother was also a Quaker and a few months before she died she gave me The Soul Bird, I read it quickly and then put it on my book case and forgot all about it. After she was gone I spent some more time reading this book, it can be quite powerful. The Soul Bird is written by Michal Snunit, an Israeli author born in 1940. She has taken on many literary roles from editing a weekly magazine to being a journalist for a daily paper or writing lyrics for children's musicals. She is best known for her...

The Constant Gardener

Advantages: Excellent plot, superb acting, stunning location
Disadvantages: Emotionally draining

..."In Africa there are no murders, only regrettable deaths." The Constant Gardener is an adaptation of a John Le Carre novel, a thrilling adventure of immense social relevance which highlights commercial exploitation and political corruption in Africa, whilst simultaneously celebrating the astounding beauty of the landscape, culture and people. The political focus of this movie is cleverly interwoven with the struggle of a British diplomat to discover the truth behind his wife's murder, to learn who she really was, and to realise a greater love and trust in her than he ever had when she was alive. The Main Cast Ralph Fiennes ...Justin Quayle Rachel Weisz ...Tessa Quayle Hubert Koundé ...Arnold Bluhm Danny Huston ...Sandy Woodrow Bill Nighy ...Sir Bernard Pellegrin Donald Sumpter ...Tim Donohue Archie Panjabi ...Ghita...

The Soup Kitchen for Glasson Birds

Advantages: Looks lovely and is very pracical.
Disadvantages: The plastic tray can be a little light.

...My daughters call me sad!!! But I just LOVE feeding the birds that come in our garden. Before I moved here I lived in a town location and the most exotic birds we got visitng were sparrows and the dreaded starlings. But now I live in a very rural area and my property has the River Lune at my front gate and The Lancaster Canal at my back gate so we are very lucky with our feathered visitors. We joke that we spend more on feeding the wildlife ( we also have a hedgehog house were we feed our constant prickly friends and have a family of ducks who visit us daily for their meals!!) than we do ourselves - and we could just be right!!! Last year for the first time we had a family of blur tits that hatched in our nesting box and they were so very friendly, they would land on our table while we were eating...
