...Is there still an avant-garde? A burning question which many people want to try and figure out an answer to is whether or not there is still an avant-garde that still exists today. There are numerous arguments in which attempt to clarify whether or not this is apparent in today's art or not. Avant-garde in French means advanced guard, front guard or vanguard. Many people often use the term to refer to either works or people that are navel or experimental, particularly in reference to art, culture, aswell as politics. Advantages: Steeped in history. In easy reach of the UK. Stunning scenery.

...The Pont du Gard has stood majestically over the River Gard in South West France for over 2,000 years. It is thought to have been built around 20 BC, with the principal purpose of bringing water to the flourishing Roman population in Nimes, from a spring 50 km away. The bridge itself is 275 meters long and 49 meters high, and consists of three tiers of arches. It served the dual purpose of carrying water as well as a roadway. It is situated in an area of truly outstanding natural beauty, and visitors are attracted not only by the extraordinary bridge but also by the cool waters of the river during the summer months. Sitting up on the banks of the river with a baguette, some cheese and a bottle of wine must surely be one of the great pleasures of life. Squeezed for pleasure

Advantages: Pleasant, easy drinking, cheap wine

...We have all been beefing about being reduced to writing ops in the new Food & Drink category, then it hit me – an excuse to drink more wine! Where I used to go to the cinema with a notebook, to write film reviews, now I can sit at home, slurp and try to write something coherent. Great. I thought of attempting to write a proper wine review, of a really good bottle, then thought I’d be honest and tell you what I normally drink. Baron Saint Jean Vin de Pays du Gard is sold exclusively (as far as I can tell) by Aldi. They sell is at an unbelievable £2.09 a bottle. A proper, 75cl bottle! I can’t remember why I first took a chance and bought a bottle – either extreme woolyheadedness or a week when I was totally skint. But I was very glad that I did. It’s alright! ...It may seem a strange time to write a review about the original Mercedes A Class considering that the revised model is now available. However, I guess there's still a good second hand market for the original A Class, so if you're thinking of buying one now, this is for you. I'd always wanted an A Class since they first came out. The shape just appealed to me, and I imagined that as it was a Mercedes this would be a quality car. My model is a year 2000, A140 Classic. The number is the models refer to the engine size, i.e. 140 is a 1.4 engine, 160 is a 1.6 engine, and the 170 is a 1.7 diesel engine. The trim level is signified by Classic, Elegance or Avant Garde. Comfort Level: The A Class is like a tardis! If you check out the official spec of the A Class you'll find it's actually slightly shorter than a Ford Ka. You...

...I first became aware of Roxy Music from a session they did on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" in 1972. They wore outrageous fifties based clthes, hair and make up and produced a sound that borrowed fom the past but sounded unlike anything I'd heard before. They mixed elements of fifties rock'n'roll and Noel Coward (courtesy of geordie leader Bryan Ferry) with avant garde electronics (provided by ambient guru and god Brian Eno) with Andy Mackay leading the song "Ladytron" with a clarinet. Not yur average run of the mill rock band. This album was preceded by the single "Virginia Plain" (now included on the CD). ...Released in 1998, 'Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen Irreligiöser Darbietung' (SUIZID) is german avant-garde dark metal band Bethlehem's follow up to the manic and deranged synthesis of black metal and doom that was their 1996 album 'Te Dictius Necare'. SUIZID is in a similar style, but whilst 'Te Dictius Necare' is very much focused on ferocious aggression/depression, SUIZID is generally speaking more of a despondent and reflective album.
