A tradition which is still used today is that garlic will rid of you of an unwanted guest :) ***Species*** Garlic is a hardy perennial that is grown as an annual and can grow between 16-24 inches, and a bulb made up of several cloves enclosed in a white papery skin is produced at the base. The cloves vary in colour from white to pink with a green stem, eventually producing white or pink flowers in warm climates. (See Pictures) ***Cultivation*** Don't use the supermarket garlic as this hasn't got protection against white rot. You need to be looking for garlic that is for growing and not eating. I picked some up from Wilkinson's last week for £1.50 for three clumps; I split these into the smaller cloves then plant out direct into the ground, I think I got about 20 cloves altogether so all being well I should have 20 clumps at the end...

Garlic - Bad Smell of Success

Advantages: Seems to alleviate a host of ailments.
Disadvantages: Causes odour, some may be intolerant to it.

To begin with, I must say that I have never found any benefit in taking garlic supplements, whether or not they were of the odourless variety. But I definitely have found fresh garlic bulbs to make a difference to the state of my health. Before I go any further, I would like to advise readers with medical conditions to always visit their doctor to get a proper diagnosis and only self-medicate with the appropriate medical approval. Garlic, not boring but nice.

If you want to grow some, it's best to buy garlic that's bred to suit our climate. Garden centres stock it from September to March. This year I paid £1.99 a pack. This size pack will give you about 30 good cloves to plant. I like to try new varieties if available. My most successful so far was called Moralus, but I can't recommend it, as I can't find anyone who stocks it any more. The garlic is packed in complete bulbs, just the same as in the supermarket, and can be very tough to split into separate cloves. Sort them out and put the really puny ones aside. There's a use for these later so don't throw them...

...Garlic Bread is one of my favourite accompaniments to pasta , pizza, or salad . I've been trying to economise, which mainly means that instead of buying Asda own brand, I'm trying, where I can to step down to the smartprice brand - the cheapest they offer- in order to make my money go further . This frozen baguette cost me 36p, which, considering Asda do a 2 pack of their own brand for 98p, would save me 26 pence if I purchased two - not a huge saving, but a saving none the less . Its roughly the same size too, although perhaps slightly less plump, and is divided into nine slices (7 real slices, and 2 ends ) The packaging, like most of the Smart Price products, is a plain white with green writing - nothing to write home about, but it does make it easy to find the smart price items amongst all the others .
